[Recueil des Costumes de la Bretagne et des autre contr‚es de la France..., Nantes: Charpentier, 1829-1831], sixty (of 120) hand-coloured lithographed plates, bound without the title-page, intermittent toning and spotting, first plate with short tear in upper blank margin (paper repaired on verso), three plates with small crude circular repair to blank upper corner, sheet size 33 x 24.5cm (13 x 9.75ins), all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, hinges split, contemporary half calf with gilt decorated spine, rubbed and some wear to extremities (slight loss to spine ends, joints partly split, and corners showing), large folio Apparently the earliest work to focus on the costume of Brittany; complete copies are extremely rare, and even collections of plates such as these seldom come on the market. The Charpentiers were Bretons who settled in Nantes, and produced a series of works using the new technique of lithography which had been introduced to Nantes in 1821. These lively and beautifully coloured plates, with their landscape back-drops, include depictions of the extraordinary headdresses of Caudebec and other regions, the bizarre stilt-walking shepherds of Landes, the pretty water and milk carriers of Rochefort, the cloth-making maidens of Louviers, and the pipe-smoking young men of Cornouaille and Lesneven. Bassam, 1796, decorative engraved frontispiece with near contemporary dated manuscript ownership address and signature to verso, printed title with similar manuscript notations to verso, three leaf introduction, two pages of the introduction torn with slight loss, 106 pages of descriptive text, thirty-one (only) uncoloured engraved 'playing card' county maps, each with a card number to upper right, Monmouth, Radnor and Anglesey with 'royal' portraits, most maps printed in strips and bound 'concertina style' into binding, a few maps bound separately, printed 'explanation' sheet, a few maps frayed or torn with some loss, later (mid 19th century) ownership signature and address to verso of front endpaper, slight staining to pastedowns, 19th century morocco gilt, very slight wear at extremities, 12mo Rare. Only one known copy listed on Copac. Not recorded in Chubb or Skelton. A few of the 1780 editions of this volume, published by H. Turpin, have appeared on the market. One of the most recent was in these rooms in 2009. We can find no record of this slightly later 1796, edition published by R.Bassam appearing anywhere. New Forest. Faden (William), A Plan of His Majesty's Forest, called The New Forest in the county of Southampton, laid down from surveys taken by Thos. Richardson, Wm. King and Abm. and Wm. Driver, by order of the Commissioners of the Land Revenue appointed by an Act of Parliament passed in the 26th year of King George, 1789, a large scale map on ten engraved sheets, nine with bright contemporary hand colouring, incorporating a large uncoloured decorative cartouche, an index map, a list of the officers and wardens of the New Forest, a list of the Bailwicks and Walks in the forest, compass rose and table of explanation, large margins, very slight staining, each sheet approximately 575 x 580 mm, retaining contemporary endpapers, modern half calf gilt on marbled boards, slim upright folio A rare map of the New Forest whose accuracy ensured that it was in continual use in several editions up until the late 19th century. We can find only one other copy of this, the first edition, appearing in auction in the last twenty years. (1)

Queen Caroline. A series of caricatures illustrating the Attorney General's charges against Queen Caroline. 51 plates complete on 35. 'Exceedingly characteristic, now very scarce, having been supressed', Originally published at Five Guineas, circa 1835, title on a morocco gilt label to upper cover, forty-nine (only of 51) etched caricatures with contemporary hand colouring, including examples by G. Cruikshank, Isaac Cruikshank, William Heath and Theodore Lane, most with the publisher's imprint of G. Humphrey, slight dust soiling, disbound, book plate of Anne Renier and F. G. Renier, contemporary green limp card covers, a little worn and frayed, oblong folio A rare collection of caricatures intended to blacken the name of the Prince Regent's (later George IV) consort, The Prince Regent married his first cousin, Princess Caroline of Brunswick in 1795. It was a disastrous match. The couple loathed each other from the outset, and separated after the birth of their only daughter, Princess Charlotte. The Prince was unable to obtain a divorce before his coronation as King George IV, and he denied Caroline access to the ceremony, or the right to her title. Caroline had spent seven years in exile, travelling in the Mediterranean and Near East. She was followed closely by spies sent by the Prince Regent. In a bid to turn public opinion against Caroline, the Government employed Theodore Lane and others to caricature her alleged indiscretions, particularly her scandalous relationship with the Italian courtier, Bartolomeo Pergami. Despite the best efforts of her husband to defame her, Queen Caroline enjoyed widespread public support, and this was reflected in popular prints, where she was depicted as a beautiful and virtuous mother. However, rumours of her promiscuity and eccentric behaviour fuelled by the publication of licentious caricatures, damaged her reputation. She died suddenly in 1821, and was mourned by her supporters as the 'injured Queen of England'. Only one copy found on Copac. (1)

A RARE ENGLISH LIMEWOOD CARVING OF THE HEAD AND WINGS OF A CHERUB, ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF GRINLING GIBBONS, LATE 17TH C 104cm hProvenance: Olive Cook (1912-2002).This newly discovered carving bears close comparison with those in Grinling Gibbons quire of St Paul's Cathedral, London of c1696-7. The quire was reordered in the 1870s, but the cherubs' heads and wings that remain in situ gaze slightly downwards, the face being planted on to the back of the head, which is constructed in at least two parts. The entire head of the present example would appear to be carved of one piece and the gaze is not so angled, but stares straight ahead. The artist and designer Olive Cook collaborated with her husband, photographer Edwin Smith, whom she married in 1954 on a series of articles on architecture, travel and Victorian popular art. Her home in Saffron Walden was gradually filled with salvaged architectural works of art, such as the present lot. It was not included in the sale of her collection at Cheffins, Cambridge, after her death being retained by a member of her family, the present vendor.++Damage and loss but unrestored, the old coat of dark brown paint chipped in places revealing white ground

GC In 1861 the former HEIC regiment 1st European Bengal Fusiliers was transferred to the British Establishment as the 101st (Royal Bengal Fusiliers) becoming the 1st Bn. Gilt a little dull otherwise VGC. Helmet was worn until 1914.

Napoleonic War Attributed Royal Artillery Officer’s Epaulettes. A rare pair attributed to Captain Robert Deane Circa 1794-1804. Each epaulette with a gold bullion lace strap, edged with twist bullion cord and termination with fine twist bullion tassels. One epaulet retains a bullion and blue silk shield embroidered with three field guns. The shield surmounted by a Crown. The underside with scarlet wool cloth, padded cotton and velvet cushion. Overall Near VGC for period. ... Accompanied by an old label giving provenance. The 1803 Army List confirms Robert Deane serving with the Royal Artillery at that time holding the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Forwarding letter for the two Mexican Dollars and Western Australia Medal. ... etc. Officer’s Cook Haylock Frederick Watson was born at Greenwich on the 18th October 1893. Qualifying as a Cook he enlisted into the Royal Navy on the 3rd March 1913. After a time at HMS Pembroke, where he qualified as an Officer’s Cook 3rd Class he joined HMAS Sydney on the 27th June 1913 thereby being on attachment to the Royal Australian Navy. At the outbreak of the war the SMS Emden a German surface raider was operating in the Indian Ocean. The raider spent nearly two months operating in the region, and captured nearly two dozen ships. On October 28, 1914, Emden launched a surprise attack on Penang; in the resulting Battle of Penang, she sank the Russian cruiser Zhemchug and the French destroyer Mousquet. She attempted a similar operation Cocos Islands, but ran into the more powerful HMAS Sydney. Inflicting heavy damage, the Emden was deliberately ran aground by he captain and abandoned after suffering a large amount of damage and heavy casualties. After the battle Watson remained with Sydney for some time. He later was attached to the Royal Naval Air Service seeing serving in France with 216 Squadron. On the formation of the Royal Air Force he transferred and was discharged in February 1919. The Mexican Dollars were salvaged from the Emden.

Gilt rectangular plate mounted with crowned strap ‘Hartfordshire’ , Hart crossing ford to centre. Retains original horizontal hook and two studs. VGC Raised in 1697 at Hertford. Became 4th Bn. Bedfordshire Regiment 1.7.1881

Royal Marines Bandmaster’s Long Service Meritorious Service Medal Group of Five. A rare group awarded to Royal Marine Bandmaster John Ventham, who joined the Royal Navy as a Band Boy 1888 at the age 14 years old. Comprising: Queen’s South Africa Medal, “146517 J. VENTHAM BD CPL HMS TERRIBLE”, China Medal “ACTG BANDR HMS TERRIBLE”, Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (EVIIIR), “BANDMASTER HMS DUNCAN”, Meritorious Service Medal (GVIR) “R.M.B. 579 BDMR 1 J. VENTHAM 23.3. 1946.”, Messina Earthquake Medal (unnamed). Medals loose with contact marks. Bandmaster John Ventham joined the Royal Navy as a Band Boy in 1888, serving onboard HMS Impregnable. He was appointed to the rank of Bandsman in 1891 and promoted to Band Corporal in 1897, see service in South Africa, with HMS Terrible, the ship was then ordered to China and on the 14th January 1900 he was appointed Acting Bandmaster a rank he held for one year. In 1904 he was posted to the Royal Marines Band Service at the Royal Navy School of Music and was again promoted to Acting Bandmaster. In 1908 now with the rank of Bandmaster 1st Class he escorted The Prince of Wales on his tour of India and Burma. He was discharged in 1912 and at the outbreak of the Great War was recalled to the Colours. Retaining his old rank he served at the Royal School of Music and onboard HMS Cordelia. For his WW1 service he was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. In 1925 he was recommended for the Meritorious Service Medal which was granted in 1946. He died in 1955.

WW1 Royal Marine Artillery Army Meritorious Service Medal. A rare example, being one of only 15 issued. Awarded to “2725 (S) GNR A ALLGOOD R.M.A.” Gunner Albert Allgood was born in Coton Cambridgeshire and joined the Royal Marines on the 16th November 1885. He transferred to the RMA and was appointed Gunner on the 5th November 1886. During the Great War he was attached to a Howitzer Brigade. He was awarded the MSM London Gazette 18th February 1919 “In recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in France and Flanders”. Only 120 Army MSM’s were awarded to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines with 15 going to the RMA He is also entitled to a 1914 Star Trio.

39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot, Victorian Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1825-55. A fine rare gilt example. Rectangular plate, seeded and with burnished edges, mounted with silver star bearing gilt crowned pierced strap ‘39th or Dorsetshire’ on a blue enamel ground. Centrally, on light green enamel ground, gilt Gibraltar Castle and Key with a scroll ‘Montis Insignia Calpe’. Above the star, a gilt scroll ‘Primus In Indis’; below the star, a number of ornate battle honour scrolls. Two hooks and two studs to reverse, complete with leather liner. 23rd (Inns of Court) Middlesex Rife Volunteers Shako. A rare example, Circa 1870. Grey wool material with scarlet cord piping, and cord loops with purl button to the crown. To the front a blacked Regimental badge with plain black patent leather peak. The interior with full soft leather lining and complete with thin chinstrap. GC. Raised as 23rd Middlesex in 1859 and renumbered 14th Middlesex in 1880.
