* JOHN BELLANY CBE RA HRSA (SCOTTISH 1942 - 2013), THE PLAYERS (1967) oil on board, signed and dated "Feb 1967" verso unframed overall size 161cm x 183cm Note 1: Music was a big part of John Bellany's life and he grew up with a piano in the family home. His mother played and John had lessons from the age of eight. He later joined a band "The Blue Bonnets" and it monopolised his weekends almost to the end of his Edinburgh College of Art days. The Blue Bonnets were "the cultural sensation of East Lothian". When Bellany took up his place at The Royal College of Art in 1965 he was hungry for knowledge. The anonimity of London, the lost souls and loneliness, the joyless crowds on the tube and the lack of camaraderie after the smaller friendlier world of Edinburgh were alienating. His early RCA works showed the tensions and anxieties of metropolitan life. However, with the unwavering support of Carel Weight and his tutors he started his love affair with the capital and all the cultural opportunities it could offer. In the summer of 1967 Bellany, accompanied by Sandy Moffat and Alan Bold, visited what was then East Germany where they celebrated John's twenty-fifth birthday. During the trip, on a day of creeping fog, the trio visited the site of the Buchenwald Concentration camp. It was the "thunderbolt of all time" for Bellany. He was convinced that a loving God could never have countenanced such evil. "Buchenwald marked the true end of innocence for Bellany" "Hell obsessed him after Buchenwald" said Moffat. Dated verso "Feb 1967" in Bellany's hand "The Players" is a large and rare early example of the post Edinburgh and pre Buchenwald period in his career. Note 2: It is extraordinary to contemplate that Bellany was only in his mid twenties when he painted these exceptional works about which London Standard art critic Brian Sewell later commented ".... in the 1960s (Bellany) painted such pictures as to make us think him as a painter with Rembrandt". John Bellany's early work, especially the large oil on boards, is highly prized by collectors and their appearances at auction are ever rarer. The most recent example to appear in our auctions was "The Finnon Smoker" (1965) 183 x 122cm oil on board, lot 65 , 29th May 2022 which sold for £80,000 (hammer).Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist in the early 1970s by Mike Hanson of London and by descent. Mike Hanson taught scenic construction at Croydon College of Art on the Theatre Design course in the 1970s.

A pair of George III Great Seige of Gibraltar gunmetal candle sticks by T. Warner cast from the canons of the siege of Gibraltar (Sept. 14th 1782), the bases faintly engraved with the detail of the battle and bearing Warner's makers marks below the square moulded bases, 27 cm overall height. The Great Siege of Gibraltar was broken in the early 1780s during the ongoing American War of Independence and was a joint attack conducted by the French and Spanish, attacking a much-beleaguered British outpost, it lasted for four years but was finally ended with the destruction of the Spanish and French ships and the captured cannon taken as “Booty” the battle was witnessed by hostile onlookers who were disappointed to see the British triumph over the combined foe of Spanish and FrenchTwo models of these commemorative candlesticks are known to exist the present pair are of the less commonly seen examples but both designs are quite rare. The inscription is faint but working from other known examples, the text reads:"Made of Spanish Canon Destroyed at Gibraltar Sept 14th 1782" The Great Siege of Gibraltar was broken in the early 1780s during the ongoing American War of Independence and was a joint attack conducted by the French and Spanish, attacking a much-beleaguered British outpost, it lasted for four years but was finally ended by the destruction of the Spanish and French ships and the captured cannon taken as “Booty” the battle was witnessed by hostile onlookers who were disappointed to see the British triumph over the combined foe of Spanish and FrenchTwo models of these commemorative candlesticks are known to exist the present pair are of the less commonly seen examples but both designs are quite rare.

Richard Thomas Moynan RHA (1856 - 1906) Boy on a Swing (1890) Oil on canvas, 35.5 x 25cm (14 x 10") Signed and dated 1890Provenance: Private Collection, DublinThis oil on canvas painting entitled Boy on a Swing (1890) is fresh to the market. It has been hidden away in a private collection for the past fifty years. The painting is in its original gold exhibition frame and it is signed and dated by the artist. The letters RHA accompanies the signature and that dates the work to the latter half of 1890. This was an important year in the painter’s life as on the 18th of July 1890 he gained full membership of the Royal Hibernian Academy, Ireland’s elite society of professional artists. Moynan became an Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy on the 18th of October 1889 and nine months later he was elevated to full membership. This unusually rapid promotion was a key feature of Moynan’s artistic career. He was 24 when he first embarked on his artistic training, as he had previously studied for the medical profession. However, from his commencement in art-school he constantly won awards for his drawing and painting, including the Taylor and the Cowper prizes. He concluded his Irish art-education by achieving the prestigious Albert Prize for the best picture shown in the Royal Hibernian Academy by a student. The painting was entitled The Last of the 24th at Isandula (1883). Gaining this award allowed him to travel to study under Karl Verlat at the Academy in Antwerp. Six months later he was the first Irishman to achieve the premier place for painting from the living model in an international competition called the Concours. He later travelled on to Paris where at the Academy Julian he was frequently placed first in drawing, painting and composition.Moynan began work on Boy on a Swing  (1890) with a meticulous figure drawing executed in his careful academic style. A shy smile illuminates the child’s features as he expertly brings the swing to a halt by extending his left arm. The detailed rendering of the boy’s portrait contrasts with the artist’s animated treatment of the landscape as Moynan confidently employs broad brush-strokes to portray the lush rural setting. This is not an affluent child playing on a swing in his own garden. The boy’s raggy dress and bare feet suggest a rare treat when he was given unexpected access to a swing.Children were a constant source of pleasure and inspiration for the artist. He painted wonderfully intimate images of his own daughter, Eileen Norah and his son, Richard. Many of his large genre pieces featured children at play. Titles such as The Village Pump (1890), The Tug of War (1890), The See Saw (1891), Invitation to Go Haymaking (1892), A Travelling Show (1892), Ball in the Cap, (1893) and The Game of Marbles (1893), all depict groups of children in a village street or in a garden setting. The psychologist, Jean Piaget viewed play as being integral to the development of a child’s intelligence and social skills. Moynan’s sketchbooks in the National Gallery of Ireland illustrate his close observation of children engaging in recreational activities. Indeed, these sketchbooks demonstrates that he explored three different compositions before settling on the final narrative for his popular Leixlip street scene, Military Manoeuvres (1891), NGI Collection. This work was painted within six months of Boy on a Swing. While Military Manoeuvres tells the story of a large group of children with make-shift musical instruments pretending to be a military band, the subject draws the viewer into the excitement of the children’s game. Boy on a Swing is a much smaller and more focused composition yet this painting generates a similar effect. The child has an impish quality and he is clearly aware of his good fortune in trying out the make-shift swing.                                                                                                                  Dr. Maebh O’Regan

Colin Middleton RHA RUA MBE (1910-1983) K. Knitting Oil on canvas, 60 x 49cm (23¾ x 19¼") Signed Exhibited: Belfast, CEMA, January 1961, cat.no.11; ACNI Touring exhibition,1970, Colin Middleton 1960-1970, cat.no.77. Painted in the early 1960s, K Knitting is one of a series of works which are particularly revealing of Middleton’s domestic life at the time. During the 1940s and much of the 1950s, the figures in his paintings were often invented and symbolic; even in those cases where there had been some inspiration from life, as in Teresa, these figures were given a more universal significance. In the late 1950s Middleton began a series of paintings of his wife, Kathleen, seated at the piano, which he continued through much of the time when they were living in Belfast in the 1960s. There are also more intimate paintings from this time, of subjects including his eldest daughter, Alison, reading, and of Kathleen absorbed in various activities, with knitting apparently a favourite hobby. The present work was painted in Lisburn, where they lived when Middleton was first employed as Head of Art at Friends School. During this time, he balanced his job with an extremely busy exhibiting schedule, including a number of exhibitions with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, in addition to regular, and generally successful, commercial exhibitions in Belfast and Dublin. The flattened picture space and geometric division of the image in K Knitting suggest the influence of Cubism, but might equally relate to the use of pattern and decorative, abstract form recalled from Middleton’s training and work as a damask designer, which became a strong influence in the 1960s. A similar technique is evident in other works of the period, including Red Landscape, Largymore, a rare landscape painted around Lisburn. A similar use of a dominant colour throughout the painting is evident in K Knitting, with powerful and shifting tones of red suggesting Kathleen’s strong personality and the artist’s absorption in painting his wife.Dickon Hall, February 2024

Lot 20

Demas Nwoko (Nigerian, born 1935)Terracotta Figure terracotta 46 x 21 x 14cm (18 1/8 x 8 1/4 x 5 1/2in).Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired direcly from the artist; The collection of Jean Kennedy;A private collection.LiteratureJean Kennedy, New Currents, Ancient Rivers: Contemporary African Artists in a Generation of Change, (Washington: Smithsonian Institution Press), p. 55. (illustrated).Ulli Beier, Contemporary Art in Africa, (London: Frederick A Praeger, 1968), p. 43. (illustrated). With a core focus on the human condition, Nwoko is explorative in his mediums and expressive in his depiction of figurative works. An artist that informs his work with his heritage as well as present day societal experiences and conveyed with architectural, aesthetic and historical understandings, the present work is a remarkably rare and synthesised example of the artist's theoretical and physical forms of expression. As the first contemporary Nigerian artist to produce highly artistically expressive baked clay works, the present lot holds a monumental role in the history of contemporary African Art.According to the inscription accompanying the illustration of the present work in Kennedy's book New Currents, Ancient Rivers, Terracotta Figure was completed between the years 1967 and 1968. However, a very similar work is labelled in The Zaria Art Society, A New Consciousness as 'Senegalese Woman' completed in 1965. More conspicuously a female figure, the latter rendition seems to be more gender specific, whilst the present lot possesses a more seemingly androgynous and ambiguous character alluding to a character of a more metaphysical nature.Designing and building his own studios enabled him to have a 'facility for pursuing painting, carving, and casting, and making terra-cotta sculptures'. (Jean Kennedy, New Currents, Ancient Rivers: Contemporary African Artists in a Generation of Change, (Washington: Smithsonian Institution Press), p. 55.). Redirecting his focus from painting to wooden sculpture from 1963, Nwoko would then move on to working with clays in 1964. This was the same clay used in the production of traditional pottery of Southern Nigeria. Terracotta too began to be a medium that Nwoko incorporated into his artistic production given its historical use in depicting figures of Nok and Ife inspiration. The process of creating terracotta sculptures such as the present lot is an intrinsically detailed process and one that Nwoko himself had to devise and ultimately concluded in constructing a blend of a necessary high temperature pottery kiln and the open firing of pottery traditionally used in Nigeria. The result was a teak lined and brick truncated cone below the earth which was then enclosed within a brick igloo, enabling isolation and control of the temperature. A wall of teak logs was further constructed down the centre of the cone to be ignited, and the various sculptures arranged in the centre of the cone at varying levels would then be gradually baked following this combustion.Informed by the Nok terracotta heads from 300 BC, the present work is informed by the the ancient sculptural work of his heritage, that being the works of Ile-Ife. 'Nwoko's artistic response to the Nok classical form can be best described as formal extrapolation, in the sense that he worked with stock elements, extending their possibilities, adding new ones.' (Chika Okeke-Agulu, 'Nationalism and the Rhetoric of Modernism in Nigeria: The Art of Uche Okeke and Demas Nwoko, 1960-1968', Vol. 39, No. 1, African Arts, (UCA James S. Coleman African Studies Centre, 2006), p. 34.) In keeping with the Natural Synthesis methodology formulated under the Zaria Art Society that Nwoko was a part of during his years as a student, the present work displays a modern translation inspired by the heritage of the artist. 'Nok formal tropes such as large, outsized heads; tubular, as if nonvertebral, body parts; and perforated pupils.' (Chika Okeke-Agulu, 'Nationalism and the Rhetoric of Modernism in Nigeria: The Art of Uche Okeke and Demas Nwoko, 1960-1968', Vol. 39, No. 1, African Arts, (UCA James S. Coleman African Studies Centre, 2006), p. 34.)Indeed, incorporating heritage, culture and society is a consistent thematic use executed by Nwoko in his work. This principle has been instilled in the artist's practice since his formal education and participation in the pivotal Zaria Art Society during his time studying at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology from 1959-1961. The groups significance lies in its insistence on developing a new art based on Nigerian and African traditional aesthetics, forms and processes, but with a modernist sensibility similar to that of the European avant-garde. This idea, theorised by his friend, Professor Uche-Okeke, as Natural Synthesis defined Nwoko's work as a painter, teacher, theatre director, designer, architect, and here as a sculptor.BibliographyPaul Chike Dike & Pat Oyelola, The Zaria Art Society, A New Consciousness, (Lagos: Publication of the National Gallery of Art, 1998), pp. 103- 10.Chika Okeke-Agulu, 'Nationalism and the Rhetoric of Modernism in Nigeria: The Art of Uche Okeke and Demas Nwoko, 1960-1968', Vol. 39, No. 1, African Arts, (UCA James S. William Kentridge (South African, born 1955)Portrait of a young womaninscribed, signed and dated 'A totally inadequate thank you for 3/ unbelievable months./ William/ Nov'73' (lower right) charcoal and pencil on paper 60.5 x 49.5cm (23 13/16 x 19 1/2in).(framed)Footnotes:Provenance Acquired directly from the artist;A private collection. The present work is a rare insight, not only into the early work of William Kentridge, but also into a personal record of the artist's life. Created as a 'thank you' gift for the subject of the work, the family of whom Kentridge was personally known, the present work bares a handwritten message to his hosts. Inscribed 'A totally inadequate thank you for 3 unbelievable months.', one gets a sense of the intimacy of his relationship with the family. Conversely to his modest statement, this work possesses a highly competent understanding of perspective and depth through both perspective and shading. These are qualities that are ever-present in his later charcoal works primarily seen in the artist's Drawings for Projections (1989) series and can thus be seen as a precursor to the iconic style and work of William Kentridge.Executed in the early mid 70s, Kentridge had been staying at his family home in Johannesburg while his parents were away. Around the time of this work's creation in 1973, Kentridge had been conscripted into mandatory military service in the South African Defence Force. This following year, Kentridge would begin his first steps in enrolling in Fine Art and then Political Science and African Studies at the University of Witwatersrand in 1974. He would later study at the Johannesburg Art Foundation until 1978. Indeed, it could be said that the present work marks the cornerstone by which Kentridge began his creative career. By the end of the decade, Kentridge had his debut solo show at The Market Gallery in Johannesburg in 1979.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
