UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold half-sovereign, 1890. London. No JEB Low shield DISH L511. No half sovereigns were struck in 1888 and 1889 in an attempt to steer the public towards greater use of silver coins, which were less prone to wear than the half-sovereign and so more cost-effective. The double-florin (4 shillings) piece was produced 1887-1890 to offset for the half-sovereign shortage, but weighs 22.6 grams and measures 36 mm. The public was not happy about carrying around the equivalent value of the widely used half-sovereign (10 shillings) in silver coins. Production of half sovereigns recommenced in 1890 with 2,266,023 coins.Having experienced lots of issues with the Jubilee coinage in the run-up to the Queen’s Jubilee, the Mint continued making tweaks to the design in the following years. To improve metal flow, the reverse shield was redesigned and moved slightly lower (sometimes called wide date as the lower part of the shield pushed the date further apart). However, the Mint continued using the high shield dies from 1887 production runs until 1892, the later ones being very rare (1891 is ultra-rare). For 1890, both types are common, the new lower shield type coins slightly more prevalent than the high shield.Crowned and veiled Jubilee bust facing left; no JEB on truncation; inscription: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRIT: REGINA F: D:. / Lower, crowned and embellished shield-of-arms; wide date in exergue; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.In secure plastic holder, graded PCGS AU58 , certification number 44824464. UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold half-sovereign, 1890. London. With JEB Low shield DISH L512. Production of half sovereigns recommenced in 1890 with 2,266,023 coins. The issues the mint encountered with the Jubilee coins are well documented and were exacerbated by the pressure for the coins to be ready for the Queen's Golden Jubilee on 20 June 1887. Due to time restraints the Jubilee head sculptor Joseph Edgar Boehm’s initials JEB were individually punched onto the master dies, resulting in three categories of JEB types—Imperfect J, hooked J (six unique dies) and no JEB. It is unclear in which order coins of these categories would have been produced and why at some point, presumably after 1887, it was decided to discontinue the use of dies with the JEB initials. After 1887, JEB initials are all of the Imperfect J type and become increasingly rarer as the years pass. This in our opinion indicates that coins struck after 1887 bearing the JEB initials would relate to the use of old dies from 1887 production runs, in the same way as the use of high shield dies.To improve metal flow, the reverse was redesigned at some point after 1887 and the shield moved slightly lower (sometimes called wide date as the lower part of the shield pushed the date further apart). In the same way as presumed with the use of JEB dies after 1887, the Mint continued using the high shield dies from 1887 production runs until 1892, the later ones being very rare (1891 is ultra-rare).Crowned and veiled Jubilee bust facing left; JEB on truncation, imperfect J; inscription: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRIT: REGINA F: D:. / Lower, crowned and embellished shield-of-arms; wide date in exergue; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.In secure plastic holder, graded PCGS XF45 , certification number 47037007. A fine and rare Grand Tour micromosaic panel depicting the arch of Janus Quadrifrons, possibly the work of Domenico Moglia, early 19th century; the edifice portrayed in its pre 1830 unrestored condition, with upper storey and foliage, in an open landscape; the backplate of copper; 6.5 x 4cm*NOTE The early 19th century date of this panel, along with the extremely fine workmanship of the miniscule tessellae suggest that Moglia might be a likely candidate for its authorship. There are apparently no other depictions of the Arco di Giano which are attributed to Moglia, but so few depictions of this monument were created that a positive attribution will always be challenging -the attribution therefore in this instance being based on period and quality alone. The Arch itself is of early 4th century origin, although it was constructed of spoil from earlier structures and then faced with marble. It was probably not designed as a triumphal arch, rather it is thought to have served as boundary marker at an important crossroads. The Middle Ages saw the arch's conversion to use as a fortress by the Frangipane clan. It was when their additions were removed in 1830 that the upper level of the arch, having survived since the late Roman period was also mistakenly removed.

Rare Imperial Russian silver-gilt shell and thread Pattern dessert service with engraved Russian nobleman's coat of arms circa 1830 by Nichols and Plincke. The twelve place setting with St. Petersburg and 84 standard marks comprising 12 knifes, 12 forks and 12 spoons in later fitted case. 70 ozs all atNichols and Plincke Biography:In the mid-19th century, there existed a relatively large community of English gold- and silversmiths. Two such figures were Charles Nicholls and William Plincke, who together acquired a silver business from John Pickersgill in 1815 and rebranded it first as William Plincke’s English Shop and later, in 1829, under both their names as Nicholls & Plincke. Having already been granted Russian citizenship in 1804, the pair gained further hereditary honorary citizenship forty years later.Early on, Nicholls & Plincke received the royal warrant and a considerable number of imperial commissions, including many Christmas presents from Nicholas I to his family and the silver portion of his daughters’ dowries. In 1852, the Imperial Court requested the creation of an impressive forty coffee services (A. von Solodkoff, Russian Gold and Silver, Trefoil Books, 1981, p. 200). They also co-produced the malachite fireplace in the Winter Palace. Though the firm’s success stemmed from its sourcing of silver in England, it also had a reputation for fine enamel work. Notable workmasters include Samuel Arnd, J. Henrikson and A. Tobinov.Unfortunately, Nicholls & Plincke was unable to withstand the pressure from their ferocious competitor, Fabergé, whose vast workforce could churn out production at a monumentally fast rate. The company fell into decline after suffering severe financial losses and was forced to close in 1880.
