Ordnance Survey. Report on the Ordnance Survey of the United Kingdom for 1855-56, 27 pp., twenty-nine plates including maps that depict the progress of six-inch to a mile map coverage in Ireland, England/Wales and Scotland, plus numerous specimen plates demonstrating the effectivness of electrotype and photographic reductions, bound with Report on the Ordnance Survey Commission; together with Minutes of Evidence, 1858, five engraved plates incl. four folding, bound with Report of the Progress of the Ordnance Survey and Topographical Depot, to the 31st December 1858, and similar reports for the years ending 1860-1872, all reports containing folding engraved maps showing the progress of work in Ireland, England/Wales and Scotland, all works bound into two volumes, contemp. cloth, one cover detached, folio (340 x 210 mm). Rare on the market. In 1855 the Ordnance Survey had just emerged from a state of transition having been newly placed under War Office administration and with a new Inspector-General of Fortifications in Lieutenant-Colonel Henry James. The introduction to the first report in this lot, which was the very first detailed report on the Ordnance Survey presented to Parliament, lists the recent achievements of the Ordnance Survey including the six-inch to a mile mapping of Ireland completed in 1846. The Irish maps Ôhaving proved to be of such great value to the public for such numerous purposes not originally contemplated` led to the continuation of the six-inch project to Scotland and Northern England which, together with the production of one-inch maps and 1/2500 (just over 25 inches to a mile) scale maps for urban areas, meant that the Ordnance Survey was fully stretched at this time. Much of the first report therefore proposes a number of recommendations to save time and labour including a new process for producing photographically reduced one-inch maps from six-inch maps, the production of electrotypes which were exact copies of the original copper plates produced to preserve the original, and developments in printed colour (hand colouring was done by boys of 13 and 14 years old for between sixpence and a shilling a day). There are specimens of many of these proposed production methods contained within the first report and the subsequent reports each contain maps depicting the growing level of coverage. (2)

A Rare `July Putsch` Period Third Reich Photograph Album `Erinnerungen an die Dienstzeitinder Ost.S.A. auf Reichsdeutchen Boden. Borholt am 3./1 1936. Sussenbarber Gottfried` (Memories of the Period of Service of the East S.A. on German Soil), of approximately one hundred and seventy seven black and white photographic images, many inscribed, including Hitler`s visit to Bremen 1934 `Stappellauf d.Scharnkorst.18.Dez.1934` , the funeral of `Kamerad Ritter - Bremen Dec. 1934`, Nuremburg Rally 1935. The July Putsch - On 25th July 1934, in the midst of difficult social and political tensions, and with the knowledge of official German positions, one hundred and fifty-five SS men disguised as `Bundesheer` soldiers and policemen, pushed into the Austrian chancellery. Chancellor Dollfu§ was assassinated by two bullets. The rest of the government was able to escape. Another group of the putschists occupied the Radio Verkehrs building and broadcast a false report about the putative transfer of power from Dollfu§ to Anton Rintelen. This was to have been the call for Nazis all over Austria to begin the uprising against the state. There were several days of fighting in parts of Carinthia, Styria and Upper Austria, as well as smaller uprisings in Salzburg. There was fighting in Upper Styria, both the industrial area between Judenburg and Leoben and in Enns, the Deutschlandsberg District in southwestern Styria and in southeastern Styria by Bad Radkersburg. Bloody clashes took place in and around Schladming and Leoben. In Carinthia, the centres of the coup were in Lower Carinthia and Sankt Paul im Lavanttal. In Upper Austria, in addition to individual actions in the Salzkammergut, the fighting was concentrated in the Pyhrn Pass and in the MŸhlviertel, where on the night of 26 July, in the Kollerschlag area on the Bavarian-Austrian border, a division of the Austrian Legion invaded Austrian territory and attacked the customs guard and a police station. Early on 26 July, a German courier was arrested at the border crossing in Kollerschlag, carrying precise instructions for the putsch. Called the "Kollerschlag Document", it testified to a clear connection between Bavaria and the July Putsch. The coup was finally crushed by the police, military and paramilitary units loyal to the government. One hundred and fifty three Nazi supporters died (including thirteen executed and seven people who committed suicide). One hundred and four died on the Government side, along with thirteen civilians. The number of injured is estimated at between five hundred and six hundred people.

A Very Rare Third Reich Luftwaffe Schellenbaum, of two-piece tombak and silver plate construction, the 1st pattern eagle above swastika and oakleaf sprigs, the half-round base inscribed `FLG. H. KDTR. HANDORF`, wingspan 39cm, height 23cm Fliegerhorst MŸnster-Handorf. The base became an operational field in September 1939, shortly after the Second World War broke out. Kampfgeschwader 54 (KG 54) arrived in September with Heinkel He 111P medium bombers; and three Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter units, Jagdgeschwader 3 (JG 3); Jagdgeschwader 51 (JG 51) and Jagdgeschwader 21 (JG 21) arrived during the Phony War period with France and Great Britain. In addition, Jagdgeschwader 27 (JG 27) and Kampfgeschwader 1 (KG 1) were formed at MŸnster-Handorf with Bf 109Es and He 111Hs. After the Battle of France and the war moved west into France and England, MŸnster-Handorf became an airfield for R&R and re-equipping combat units. Various units moved in and out of the airfield for brief periods of time, JG 77, a Bf 109E fighter unit and KG 3, a Junkers Ju 88A multirole bomber (KG) unit spent time at the field. In June 1943, Lehrgeschwader 1, a Ju 88A training unit used the field through most of the year. With the increasing Allied bomber attacks on Germany in 1943, MŸnster-Handorf was assigned to be part of the Defence of the Reich campaign by the Luftwaffe. Nachtjagdgeschwader 7 (NJG 7), a Ju 88G night fighter unit was formed at the base in February 1944 and flew night interceptor missions until September. It was replaced by Nachtjagdgeschwader 2 (NJG 2), also formed at the base which flew missions until November 1944 and Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 (NJG 1), which operated Heinkel He 219 night fighters until April 1945. Day interceptor units were JG 54 with Focke-Wulf Fw 190As and also Kampfgeschwader 76 (KG 76) were assigned to the field in late 1944 and early 1945, KG 76 possibly never being operational due to fuel shortages. Kampfgeschwader 2 (KG 2) flew Dornier Do 217 aircraft with V-1 flying bombs attached used the base during September 1944, then moved into northern Holland to be closer to the British targets. The Luftwaffe interceptors and the V-1 flying bombs at MŸnster-Handorf drew the attention of the USAAF Eighth Air Force, with no less than ten heavy bomber attacks on the airfield between December 1943 and March 1945. In addition, as the airfield in range of Ninth Air Force B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-47 Thunderbolt fighter bombers in eastern France, attacks on the airfield by these tactical units with 500-pound General-Purpose bombs; unguided rockets and .50 calibre machine gun sweeps were frequent. These attacks would take place when Eighth Air Force heavy bombers (B-17s, B-24s) were within interception range of the Luftwaffe aircraft assigned to the base, with the attacks being timed to have the maximum effect possible to keep the interceptors pinned down on the ground and be unable to attack the heavy bombers.
