P. R. Napier, Commanding No. 40 Squadron RAF confirming the victory. Autographs of McElroy are extremely rare in any form as a result of his early death, when killed in action, at the young age of 25. One file hole to the upper left corner, not affecting the text or signatures, VG The present document relates to McElroy’s 37th aerial victory.
HERZNER HANS-ALBRECHT: (1907-1942) German Oberleutnant of World War II, the first man to engage in combat at the beginning of the war, one week before the official commencement of hostilities. Herzner was also the first recipient of a decoration for valour in World War II. Extremely rare, bold pencil signature ('Herzner') on a small oblong 12mo ticket, possibly removed from a larger document. The pale pink printed ticket bears the black printed numbers 5 and 281 along with several other light pencil numbers. One small file hole towards the left edge, not affecting the signature. VG On Friday, 25th August 1939 at 15.02 hours Adolf Hitler issued his order to attack Poland in what was known as Operation White. However four hours later he rescinded the order although it came too late to stop Herzner and his thirteen man special commando unit who had crossed the Slovakian-Polish border at 00.03 hours on 25th August, intent on preventing the destruction of the strategic Jablunka Pass Tunnel by the Polish Army. At 03.55 hours Herzner captured the railway station at Mosty, but failed to secure the tunnel as a result of stiff resistance. When radio communications (which had been lost) were re-established with Herzner's HQ, a few hours later, he and his unit were immediately withdrawn. One Pole had been killed, two Germans wounded and one taken prisoner. On the 1st September Hitler re-ordered the attack on Poland and, once again, Herzner captured Mosty. The tunnel was destroyed by the Polish Army. For his actions Herzner received the Iron Cross II Class.

‘…I think she is the best young actress around…’ KUBRICK STANLEY: (1928-1999) American Film Director. Rare T.L.S., Stanley, one page, 4to, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, 25th February 1983, to Euan [Lloyd]. Kubrick thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I am very happy that you will meet with Georg. He really is the best, and if you place your trust in him he will not let you down'. He continues 'I must also take this opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed "Who Dares Wins". Casting Judy Davis was a brilliant idea. I think she is the best young actress around and she brought instant credibility and dramatic interest to all her scenes'. Some very slight thinning to the edges of the page, caused by previous mounting to the verso. Together with George Cukor (1899-1983) American Film Director, Academy Award winner. T.L.S., George Cukor, one page, 4to, n.p., 10th September 1970, to Roy Moseley. Cukor announces 'I'd be very pleased indeed to be in your series as....I blush as I dictate this....'All Time Great Film Director'. But 'ay, here's the rub; ' - I don't believe in pigeon holing or catagorizing (except, of course, as 'an all time great') There's no one favourite picture of mine, they all have their interest for me. Let's say I have a 'weakness' for "Little Women". The next part of your question is tricky, about 'artists I particularly enjoy working with'. When one's been at it as long as I have, there are many different relationships with actors....There are so many that I'd find it very difficult to enumerate....Why do you need any questions at all? Why don't you write what you feel, and what you know? I think the results would be more exciting....' The signature slightly faded, although legible, and with some slight thinning and a few tears to the edges of the page, caused by previous mounting to the verso. About G, 2 Euan Lloyd (1923- ) British Film Producer.
