ISLAMIC COINS, PRE-MONGOL IRAN, Great Seljuq, Tughril Beg, Gold Dinar, al-Rayy 428h, rev muhammad rasul allah / al-amir al-sa’id / tughril beg / muhammad bin mika’il, 2.59g (Miles Rayy -). Cracked in centre, some weakness in margins, otherwise very fine, extremely rare and unrecorded. The date of this coin would appear to be impossible, as it predates the Seljuq conquest of Rayy by at least four years, but both the mintname and date are clear. It also predates the accepted start of Tughril Beg’s reign (429h); the earliest known date for his coinage is 432h. One possibility is that it was struck later using an old obverse die; however, Miles does not record any coins of Rayy with this date..

ISLAMIC COINS, COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Egypt, Khedive Abbas Hilmi II (1892-1914), Dedication of the National Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, Cairo, 1897, Silver Medal, by Séraphin Emil Vernier, obv uniformed bust left wearing fez, rev crest and open wreath, legend in Arabic and French naming the Khedive, Minister, Director and Architect, stamped ARGENT 950 M/M on edge, 70mm (BDM VI:227). Nearly extremely fine, toned and very rare. The first Egyptian Museum was built in Boulak, but in 1891 it was moved to the Giza Palace. The present Museum, with its 107 halls and which this medal commemorates, is situated in the Tahrir Square in Cairo.Building work commenced in 1897 and it opened on the 15th November, 1902 Vernier dates his obverse portrait 1896

THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN A rare and fine chest lock, Spanish, 16th century wrought iron, the finely worked clasp with an angel within an architectural niche, with cut out tracery all over, the bolts in the form of Gothic pilasters on Solomonic columns, the lower corners with scallop shells, (possibly for St James of Compostella), lacking keyhole guard h.21cm., w.15.5cm. A rare and fine chest lock, Spanish, 16th century wrought iron, with Sts. Peter and Paul with attributes between a keyhole guard with a fleur-de-lys coat of arms and crown surmount, decorated with cut out tracery and two corner bolts in the form of mermaids, losses h.20cm., w.17cm. A rare boarded chest, Gothic, 15th/16th century oak, the front carved with blind tracery, quatrefoils and roundels, the sides with traces of former carrying handles h.38.5cm., w.113cm., d.41cm. Provenance The blind tracery on this chest echoes that of another early example illustrated by Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, fig. 2:123a and fig. 4.3. This illustrated example also features three roundels to each pointed arch.
