A VERY RARE EARLY 19TH CENTURY BLUED AND GILT OFFICER'S MAMELUKE OF THE 5TH DRAGOONS, 71cm sharply curved blade decorated with scrolling foliage, crowned GR cypher and crowned Royal Arms, stands of arms, regimental devices and motto, battle honours, a mounted cavalry officer, the initials of Princess Charlotte of Wales and the owner's initials JW, all highlighted in gilt on a blued ground, characteristic gilt hilt with two-piece ivory grips, contained in its polished fishkin covered wooden scabbard with magnificent gilt mounts decorated with bold lion's head mounts. John Watson was commissioned as Coronet August 20th 1812 and departed as Lieutenant on the 20th of April 1826. Watson served with the regiment in the Peninsula campaign and was present at Vittoria and Toulouse. Only a very small number of these Mameluke exist, Royal Armouries IX.5441 which retains minor blue and and gilt, the Royal Dragoon Guards Museum 1987.332 and a third which appeared in Lyle Arms & Armour Guide of 1980 p.82 and passed through Bosley's as lot 1096 9th March 2005. A RARE 18TH CENTURY DRAGOON'S BACKSWORD BY HARVEY,91cm double fullered blade engraved with a crown over GR to either side of the forte and with the maker's name HARVEY, characteristic basket hilt with triangular form front plate with two side-bars, flattened bun-shaped pommel, wire bound fishskin grip. A VERY FINE AND RARE PAIR OF 18TH CENTURY SPANISH (CATALAN) MIQUELET-LOCK BLUNDERBUSS BELT PISTOLS, 11.5inch four-stage barrels with ringturned belled muzzles, engraved to the breech flats Babiray Tadilla, Joseph Manol, Solo demi Diana Sol, further decorated with a flower to the back of the breeches on each flat, the cocks and pan seat with scalloped engraving to the edges, full stocks finely decorated over all with pierced brass inlaid panels and interspersed with brass studs, characteristic angled butts, belt hooks mounted on the left side, brass capped wooden ramrods.

The watch having a quartered silvered dial with original blue faceted hands and Arabic numeral chapter ring. The dial signed Rolex with subsidiary seconds dial aperture to six. Gold Rolex Patent winder to side of curved case. Details to outside of case reading Model Depose and Rolex crown with serial and model numbers 20720 and 2535. Inside of case reading Rolex 25 World Records Geneva Suisse with SAR crown mark and Robert Maylan RM Parachute mark. The 15 Rubies Rolex Prima watch movement being triple winding and signed with each ruby set in gold. Set to a later leather strap with plated Rolex clasp. Watch measures 9 inches. Case 20mmx30mm. Dial 20mm across. Weighs 20.43 grams gross. Marks on interior of case date watch to early 1930's. Appears to wind and function correctly but buyers are reminded to satisfy themselves prior to bidding. Rare.

A Chinese archaistic Ge-type vase with ram handles, hu, underglaze-blue Qianlong seal mark and possibly of the period (1736-1795), sturdily and robustly potted after archaic bronze prototypes, of flattened lobed pear shape raised on a splayed base, the body decorated with pendent plantain leaves in low relief, the waisted neck applied with two ram-head handles, all under a pale grey crackled glaze with a lattice of larger rust crackles enclosing smaller regular crackles and stopping neatly around the foot, 26.6cm high While the shape of this piece is familiar, it is rare to find related vases with two ram-head handles and more common are those decorated with dragon handles or two zoomorphic ring handles. A rare Chinese gilt bronze funerary mask, Liao Dynasty (907-1125), this significant ritual and funerary object depicts the serene face of a male who was part of the elite Khitan tribe, a people who ruled north China over a thousand years ago, during the Liao dynasty, 24cm long x 23.5cm wide, on an acrylic stand and with Oxford laboratory report Provenance: Private collection purchased in London 29th August, 2003. Placing a metal mask on the face of the deceased was a unique tradition of the nomadic Khitan; they buried their high-ranking men and women with various amounts of metal body attire such as a mask like this one for the face and a suit “woven” from wire for the body. The masks were highly personalized and fashioned in a variety of shapes and sizes, the type of metal depending on the class of the wearer. The simplest were made of thinly hammered bronze, in rare cases, silver, gilt bronze and high karat gold were reserved for the elite. See similar examples in the Musée Guimet, Paris, reference no. FAMILLE VERTE 'WATER BIRDS' CHARGER, KANGXI PEDRIOD, showing a kingfisher perched on a flowering plant on the edge of a pool, with further birds below, one perched on a rock and the other washing, the underside painted with landscape scenes, the base with a foliate mark, 34cm diam Provenance: Christie's 11th November 1985, lot 219. Note: this dish is rare in its open format without a border, which has more in common with famille verte narrative chargers of the period. A similar dish was extant at Clandon Park until it was stolen in 2010. Another is recorded in the Musee Guimet, Paris. The execution of painting can also be compared to a set of dishes in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
