VERY RARE WILLIAM AND MARY GOLD FIVE GUINEA DATED 1691,the 'Roman Style' bust featuring the dual monarchs, with William's head uppermost, the Latin legend reads 'GVLIELMVS ET MARIA DEI GRATIA', translating to 'William and Mary by the Grace of God', the reverse features the Royal Arms, the crowned quartered shield bearing the arms of France, Scotland, Ireland and England with central shield bearing the lion rampant of Nasser, the obverse legend reads 'MAG BR FR ET HIB REX ET REGINA 1691', translating to 'King and Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland', in boxProvenance: A Private Scottish Collection.William and Mary ruled jointly as King William III and Queen Mary II from 1689 - 1694. Born in the Netherlands, King William, known as William of Orange, was sovereign Prince of Orange from birth. Queen Mary was the eldest daughter of the Duke of York, future King James II & VII, and Anne Hyde. With the removal of James II in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, his daughter Mary and her husband Prince William of Orange rules as co-monarchs.First minted on the 6th of February 1663, under the reign of King Charles II, the guinea was a British coin originally equivalent to one pound sterling. Although not the official name for the coin, this term 'guinea' was affectionately adopted as most of the gold used in these coins came from the region in West Africa. The guinea would be in circulation from the reign of King Charles II to King George III, from 1663 – 1814, a total of 151 years. In The Great Recoinage of 1816, the guinea was replaced by the pound as the major unit of currency however long after the guinea ceased to circulate, it is still prominent in the world today. Luxury items such as land, art, horses and professional fees including horse and greyhound racing were often quoted in Guineas up until decimalisation in 1971.Present day usage of the guinea is mainly associated with horseracing. Bids for racehorses at auction are still made in guineas to the present day. This means that the buyer will pay the guinea equivalent amount for the horse and the seller will receive that figure in pounds. The difference of 5p in each guinea is traditionally the auctioneers commission. Many major horse races in Great Britain, New Zealand, Canada and other countries bear names ending in ‘guineas’.No previous signs of mounting. No grade available. Has been handled - scratches, nicks and marks visible. Please see photos.

First struck in 1887 and minted over the course of only four years, the double florin posed some problems and earned its nickname the 'Barmaid's Curse'. The silver crown was worth 20% more than the double florin however there was only a 3mm difference in size between them making it difficult to distinguish which coin had been handed over the bar in a dark tavern. Due to their unpopularity, they ceased production in 1890.

The Reverend Dr William Taswell (1652-1731), who in 1666, had been page to the Dean of Westminster and witnessed the Great Fire of London and later wrote a vivid account of the event. This Chinese armorial service was made c.1755 for Dr Taswell's son, William Taswell (1708-1777), Rector of Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire. In his will dated 3rd October, 1775, he specifies that "all such China in my possession as shall be found marked with my family's arms" was to go to his son George Taswell, at the time serving the East India Company in India as Colonel of 'The Madras Terribles'. A full copy of the Will can be seen in the National Archives at Kew, National Archives: PROB-11-1012-26   George in turn left "the whole of the China ware on which are the arms of the family" in his own will in 1814 to his surviving younger son George Morris Taswell (1784-1868). Such specific contemporary records of Chinese armorial porcelain are exceedingly rare.  George Morris Taswell left Madras and settled in Kent with his new wife, Anne Gipps of a Canterbury family, who he married in 1813 in St Martins, Canterbury, where he was later buried in 1868.  This substantial part of the Taswell armorial service is being sold by a direct descendant of George Morris Taswell and is on the market for the first time in its history.  For the arms see David Sanctuary Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. I, London, 1974, p. 362, M1.清乾隆 外销Taswell家族纹章瓷一组拍品来源:英国Taswell家族世藏Condition Report: sixteen octagonal dinner plates 23cm diameter of which two are good and six have small rim chips eight al all have minor wear and rubbing to gilding and seven plates all with long cracks seven octagonal soup bowls, 23cm diameter of which four are in good condition other than minor wear and two have rim chips and one has long crack and all have minor wear and rubbing to gildingfour small octagonal plates, 16cm all have rim chips and one has long cracklarge canted rectangular serving dish, 40.5cm diameter in good conditionanother smaller, 29.5cm diam with wear to enamels and gilding three smaller serving dishes, each approximately 15.5cm diam generally all good other than some wear to gilding and minor enamel lossa soup tureen stand, 36.5cm diam good other than scale chip to rim 1.2cm long x 7mm a tea cannister and cover, 12.5cm high the cover with chip mainly to underside and the rim of the cannister with 7mm x 4mm chip on unglazed area 1.8cm x 4mma sugar bowl, 14cm diameter with three hair cracks 6cm and two 4.5cm long two two-handles cups, both with cracks and chips; a tea bowl, badly damaged with pieces missing three saucers all badly damaged and repaired and a coffee cup with 4cm hair crack and 2 x 1cm hair cracksCondition Report Disclaimer

A fine and rare album of 67 china trade watercolours, Qing Dynasty, circa 1835, depicting members of the imperial court, views of trading posts, furniture, decorative arts, native flora, fish and bird species, in red morocco ruled and richly gilt stamped binding, 24cm x 20cm  Provenance:  Private Collection Sotheby's, New York, Fine Books and Manuscripts online, 21st June 2019, lot 159 Likely to have been painted by at least four distinct artists, the images present here skilfully and vividly depict various scenes in the south eastern region of China. The album is highlighted by a portrait of an imperial prince in gold ground robes and blue surcoat with frontal dragon roundels, an imperial prince in gold ground dragon robes with attendant, and an imperial prince with yellow surcoat-a colour reserved for the imperial family-and lavender ground robes. Each is followed by a companion portrait of their consort. Civil and military officials were divided into nine ranks, from first (highest) to ninth (lowest). Each was indicated by a corresponding animal, stitched on to a robe, or bufu, so a person's rank could be easily identified. Real and mythical animals, such as qilins, indicated military status, while civil ranks were represented by birds.  The album also depicts the four port views in the Chinese export painting canon: Canton, Whampoa, Boca Tigris, and Macau. The hongs at Canton were established in the late 17th century, and quickly became a popular subject for those local artists who could paint the details of architecture and shipping to the satisfactions of western visitors. As the largest and oldest of trading ports, Canton was the most established. It would not be until 1843 that the five additional 'treaty ports' of Amoy, Foochow, Hong Kong, and Shanghai would open and export paintings available.  In the present paintings, ships from the East India Company, England, American, Netherlands and Denmark mill about these thriving ports. A comparison of different views shows the ever changing political and physical landscape of the hongs, for example, at Canton, the Spanish flag flew to the left of the American flag until about 1830, and here we see it replaced by the French flag. 约清1835年 罕见中国动植物及建筑等各式题材外销画一本67件拍品来源:纽约苏富比罕见手抄本及图书专场,2019年6月21日,拍品159号  Condition Report: Minor foxing and soiling.
