*Hill (Alexander Wilson, 1867-1949). A keen amateur photographer, he lectured widely on the process, and his work was highly respected even in his lifetime. Shortly before his death, he ruthlessly edited his huge collection of images, burning those he believed were not to his exacting standards. Thus, the prints which survive, are those with which he was completely satisfied. His work can be found in the collections of, amongst others, the National Library of Scotland, the National Galleries of Scotland and St Andrews University Special Collections. The images offered here were gifted to John Hannavy from two sources: Hill's son, Professor Sir Iain George Wilson Hill (1905-1982) in the late 1970s, and art and photography collector Erich Sommer (d. 2004) in the mid 1980s.
