Stead), rev. lionel powell & harold holt around to inaugurate the opening of their new premises for concert tickets at 161 new bond st. london w.1 1925, hallmarked Birmingham 1924, 57mm, 62.27g. Very fine and extremely rare £100-£150 --- Provenance: Bt R. Gladdle October 2013. Harold Holt (1885-1953), England’s leading theatrical impresario in the 1930s and the son of a Jewish diamond merchant from Kimberley, South Africa, managed many of the best-known names in classical music, including Dame Nellie Melba, Yehudi Menuhin, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Paul Robeson. He teamed up with Lionel Powell (†1931) in 1924, Powell having previously been a partner in the agency originally formed by Alfred Schulz-Curtius (1853-1918) to promote the music of Richard Wagner. The partnership was not long-lived, being dissolved by mutual consent on 31 July 1927. After Powell’s death Holt was the pre-eminent concert promoter in his field. Described as easy to work with but not a sufferer of fools, Holt had an infamous run-in with the Italian actor and operatic tenor Enrico Caruso Jr, then based in California, who refused an offer of $36,000 for ten appearances in London

Andaman Islands, One of the great rarities in the British Colonial series: Victoria, Rupee, 1866, 9.47g/12h (Prid. 4; KM. Tn2; cf. Ford II, 472). Some digs in flan, central hole crude, otherwise fine, extremely rare; only about 6 specimens known £2,000-£2,600 --- Provenance: D.L.F. Sealy Collection. To our knowledge, only one other specimen of this great Colonial rarity has been offered at public auction since the late Dick Ford’s (London Coins 156, March 2017, lot 1049, £12,000); the Ford specimen, comparable to London’s, realised £1,850 in 1991

Sir Ashton Lever (1729-88), b Alkrington Hall, Rochdale, accumulated one of the largest private collections of natural objects – flora, fauna and animals. He opened his museum in 1766 and moved it to London in 1774, opening in February following year. He became bankrupt in 1786 and applied to Parliament for permission to dispose of his collections by lottery, but only 8,000 of a proposed 36,000 tickets were sold at £1 each

Minor surface marks, otherwise good very fine, very rare £150-£200 --- Provenance: Tim Millett FPL 2008 (107). There is uncertainty as to whether these tickets should be associated with Grosvenor Gardens, London, or the gardens of the same name in Bath (as ascribed by Millett), although whether the latter had any association with the Duke of Westminster would appear questionable
An important relic originally awarded to “Honest Jack Althorp”, the 3rd Earl Spencer, “the most decent man who ever held high Government office”: NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, Northampton, uniface octagonal silver, unsigned, racehorse standing right, winning-post in background, stippled field, back named (1, Ld. Spencer), 57 x 36mm, 30.73g (W 1551; D & W –; cf. DNW 138, 3232). Scuffed on the back, otherwise about very fine, extremely rare £500-£700 --- John Spencer, 3rd Earl Spencer, PC, DL, FRS (1782-1845); educ. Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge; DL for Northamptonshire 1803; enjoyed a love for the turf and horses from an early age; MP successively for Okehampton, St Albans and Northamptonshire, 1804-34; Leader of the House of Commons and Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1830-4; considered by many as the architect of the fight to pass the Reform Bill, 1832; entered the House of Lords, 1834; first president of the Royal Agricultural Society, 1838. Race meetings were staged unofficially at Northampton Heath in the 17th century but were regularised in the late 1730s by the Earl Spencer and in 1737 the first official meeting took place. New grandstands were erected in 1844, but before then the racecourse had the dubious reputation for also being used for public executions. Racing ceased in 1904 after a fatal accident involving spectators
