*Abbasid, al-Muti‘, heavy dirham, Madinat Atakiya (sic, for Antakiya) 354h, of standard Abbasid type without additional legends or name of governor, 6.17g (cf RIC 359; A 265), some weak striking, about very fine and rare. This purely Abbasid issue was struck during a brief period when Antioch rebelled against the ruling Hamdanids.
*Constans II, eighth siliqua, Rome, facing bust, rev., rm monogram, 0.15g (cf. O’Hara, SNR 64, 1985 type 3; MIB Constantine IV 75; S. 1125A), only fine, very rare (ex M.D. O’Hara collection). This and the following lot are imperial issues recorded by O’Hara alongside the Papal issues with monograms or letters which are associated with certain 7th and 8th century popes.
*Boeotia, Thebes, 470-440 BC, hemiobol, half Boeotian shield with Θ below, rev., amphora, 0.46g (Bérend (Mildenberg Festschrift), pl. 1, 9, this piece; SNG Fitzwilliam 2922), very fine and an extremely rare variety Ex BCD collection, Triton IX, 10 January 2006, lot 368 where the existence of the theta on the obverse is noted for the first time. On no other coins of Thebes does the ethnic appear on the obverse.
Boeotia, Thebes, 450-425 BC, hemidrachm, Boeotian shield, rev., kantharos with Θ-Ε-Î’ around, 2.85g (BMC 43), very rare; and obol of same type, 0.69g (BMC 44-46; Bérend (Mildenberg Festschrift), pl. 1, 18, this piece), fine to very fine (2) Ex BCD collection, Triton IX, 10 January 2006, lots 378 and 379.
A rare set of Victorian mahogany gentleman club scales, the suede button upholstered padded back flanked by padded arms above spindle supports beside a japanned scale stamped "W&T Avery, Birmingham" with bands of Greek key gilt heightened decoration, the base set with a single drawer housing six original stacking weights cut with grooves to weight 16 stones - 7lbs, the beam weighing a further 0-4lbs, overall raised on ring turned legs to brass caps. Model no. 1050.
A rare cased set of four George V hallmarked silver tortoiseshell mounted menu holders, each circular disc decorated with a different sport; hunting, golf, cricket and tennis, within a gilt heightened green leather case, E.S. Barnsley & Co. Ltd, Birmingham 1912, diameter of disc approx 3.2cm. CONDITION REPORT: Tennis menu holder has split where the front section meets the frame. This is a clean break but would require attention. Makers marks are also rubbed on the tennis example. The cricket example does not have any marks on it and also has a tiny 3mm loss of silver inlay depicting the crease.
