(3)Steve Harley "Photographer Mick Rock introduced me to Billy, a soft-spoken man with the kindness of a saint in his eyes. He didn't designed menswear, only women's haut couture, but Billy and his cutters and seamstresses seemed to become quietly excited at the prospect. We went for it, all right. Acres of rare Chinese silk, a hood, red satin lining, folds and pleats to the ground; the outfit brought a slight air of mystery to the dressing-rooms, even if some of the chaps did mock. The hand embroidery was overseen by Billy's head seamstress, a fabulous Greek woman, Nevis. The costume shared the stage with me in many towns and countries during the '76 world tour."William Elphinstone Gibb (23 January 1943 – 3 January 1988) was a Scottish fashion designer who became renowned in the 1960s and 70s for his unusual and flattering designs.Lots 1001-1043 have been consigned by Steve Harley, singer and frontman of 1970s group Cockney Rebel, whose number one hit ‘Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)’ has been covered at least 120 times and appears on soundtracks as diverse as The Full Monty, Lego Rock Band, and a Marks & Spencer’s advert. The collection includes stage costumes, vinyl, backstage passes, souvenir brochures and Harley's own script for the 1986 Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of The Phantom of The Opera.Jacket – chest 48cm, sleeve 67cm, shoulder 46cm, repair to both inner sleeves, quite grubby at the bottom Barry Gibb label nearly off, back quite discoloured.Waistcoat – Barry Gibb label nearly off, both armpits repairs, quite discoloured in places, two buttons are chipped.Trousers – repair to the rear, one repair to the interior end of the legs (not visible when worn).
