Lot 661

FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE PROFESSOR HANS VON BERTELEA RARE AND UNRECORDED SILVER-METAL-MOUNTED EBONISED QUARTER-REPEATING AND STRIKING TABLE CLOCKThe dial and movement signed Daniel Quare, London, circa 1710, the movement attributed to the late Tompion/early Graham workshop, the replica case second half 20th CenturyThe domed-top case surmounted with a knopped baluster handle, and applied with foliate cast repoussé panels, the rectangular door, inset with a glazed panel, flanked by two shaped escutcheons and outlined with an arched beaded profile, flanked with a pair of cast and pierced spandrels, the sides each with an arched, pierced panel, with metal bead outline, with glazed back door, also with metal bead outline, on silver-metal gadrooned feet, the fire-gilt break-arched dial signed Dan. Quare LONDON in an oval cartouche amongst a design of profuse engraving, surmounted by a mask of Mercury, the messenger, wearing his winged helmet and with crossed attributes of the Caduceus and horn below, surrounded by ribbon-tied foliate scrolls, with calendar aperture above, flanked to each side by a silvered subsidiary for pendulum regulation and strike/silent, above a silvered chapter ring, blued steel hands, Roman chapters and Arabic five-minute markers, well divided with inner 15-minute divisions and outer 12-minute divisions and Gothic cross half-hour markers, with finely pierced cast spandrels, enclosing a finely matted centre, with false pendulum aperture; the twin train fusée movement, of phase two type, with profusely engraved backplate within an outlined border, signed in an oval cartouche Dan. Quare LONDON, with fruit-filled scrolls to top and base, flanked to each side by a winged female caryatid, amongst foliate scrolls, with seven knopped latched pillars, rack strike, with pull-quarter repeat on Tompion's system via double-cocked interconnected blued-steel levers, with pivoted verge escapement and scrolled-foot bell stands, the front plate with chamfered cusp feet to the cocks45cm high PROVENANCEThe late Professor Hans von Bertele (d. 1984), then by direct descent.Previously unpublished and unrecorded, this clock belongs to a group of seven table clocks, each signed and retailed by Quare, but whose movements are likely to have come from either the late Tompion/early Graham workshop, or from the workshop of one of their employees. The movement displays several features that allow this attribution - notably the robust construction, the repeating mechanism with its double-cocked arms on the back-plate, its cusped cocks, and the finishing, which is of the highest standard. The beautifully engraved back-plate, with naked winged female caryatids, is by Graver 195, who has been tentatively identified as Henry Adeane. The group of Quare Tompion clocks are illustrated, described and discussed in Richard Garnier and Jonathan Carter's The Golden Age of English Horology, Masterpieces from the Tom Scott Collection, Winchester 2015, pp. 286-295. There is variance between Tompion's known workshop practice and the group of seven: for instance, the group each have four pinned dial feet, whereas Tompion would use three feet, each latched. On this piece there are four latched dial feet. Another variance is that the dials on the group of seven all incorporate Quare's Indian mask spandrels, whereas this dial does not. These details, together with the fact that Tompion and Graham never used arched dials for their standard two-train striking clocks, all help confirm that Quare provided the dials and cases for these movements.Jeremy Evans has proposed that a possible candidate for this output was James Tunn (see Garnier and Carter, p. 295). He was bound to Ambrose Gardner in the Goldsmith's Company and would have been free around 1689. He was listed close to Quare's Exchange Alley premises in the early 1690s, and it has been suggested that he might have been working for him as a journeyman. In October 1697 he had his own business in Ely Court near Hatton Garden and it is likely he would have been one of the principal clock outworkers supplying Tompion. A clock by Tunn (Sold Christie's, New York, 23 April 1988, lot 35.) is illustrated in Richard Barder The Georgian Bracket Clock, Woodbridge 2001, colour plate 1, p. 50. The similarities between the dial illustrated by Barder, and the dial of the clock being offered here - they are almost identical with fine engraving and fire gilding - strongly suggests that they came from the same - ie Tunn's - workshop.Professor Hans Bertele von Grenadenberg (d.1984) was born in Austria. During the second half of the last century he formed a collection of clocks which comprised the best examples of work from England, France, Switzerland and Austria, amongst others. Highly respected in his field, he wrote prolifically and published learned articles in Antiquarian Horological Journal and The Horological Journal, amongst others. He was also an avid art collector, whilst professionally he was an industrial electrical engineer. His book on chronometers, first published in Munich in 1981, with an English language version published 10 years later, is a standard work. A GEORGE II WALNUT LONGCASE CLOCKThe movement by George Graham, No. 709, circa 1733, the case associated and of the periodThe cushion-moulded hood with a pierced fret, flanked with gilt-brass-mounted columns, above the trunk with rectangular moulded door, above the cross-banded stepped plinth, the 12in. gilt brass dial with Indian mask spandrels, silvered chapter ring enclosing a finely matted centre with seconds subsidiary dial and date aperture, signed on a silvered oval cartouche Geo: Graham London and again to the lower edge, the substantial fully latched five-pillar movement with bolt and shutter maintaining power and dead beat escapement, with rack strike to the bell, numbered to the backplate lower centre 709233cm highPROVENANCE:Possibly F.H. Green, London, before 1945Possibly W.G.A. King, Blackheath With Partridge, New Bond Street and illustrated in their 1993 Summer catalogueSir Emanuel Kaye, C.B.E., (d.1999) Hartley Place, Hartley WitneyAcquired by the current vendor circa 2000Francis Herbert Green (1872-1936) was a collector-dealer and author of Old English Clocks: being a collector's observations on some seventeenth century clocks (London: St. Dominic's Press, 1931). His clock gallery, which was situated above his wine and tobacco shop in the Royal Exchange, would have been well known in the trade. See Jonathan Betts, 'Two Rare Books', Antiquarian Horology, December 2003, pp. 677-9, and subsequent correspondence in the March 2004 issue, pp. 118-9.A letter in the Horological Journal, December 1963, p.383, from Mr. WGA King of Blackheath, concerning three longcase movements and dials he had purchased from a scrap merchant - “... it seems that all were dumped in his yard by a demolition lorry very many months ago and almost certainly came from a house bombed during the last war”. One of the three clocks - a month-going Tompion, is known to have belonged to F.H. Green but he is not known to have owned no.709 (though he did own no.717). It is possible that all three came from his premises in the City. The original case seems likely to have been destroyed during the blitz and the present case, though perfectly correct is style, was found for it during the 1960s.George Graham (b.1673, d.1751) was apprenticed in 1688, entered the Clockmakers' Company in 1695 and was Master in 1722. One of England's greatest makers, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society. From 1696 he was assistant to Thomas Tompion. From 1711-13 he was in partnership with Tompion and succeeded him on his death in 1713. He is buried alongside him in Westminster Abbey.R. Garnier & J. Carter, The Golden Age of English Horology: The Tom Scott Collection, Winchester 2015, includes a 'checklist' of George Graham's Watches and Clocks by Jeremy Evans and Rory McEvoy, see page 203, which details this clock in the tables.Bellmans is grateful to Jeremy Evans for his assistance with the catalogue entry.

Triton Motorcycle Registration Number: BWE 98H First Registered: 20.10.1969 Engine Size: 650cc Colour: Black Engine Number: 6T04909 Frame Number: K1255094 V5C present The Triton is a very happy marriage of Triumph twin power and Norton road holding that is rightly regarded by enthusiasts as the quintessential British ''sports special'' almost to the point of it being defined as the stereotypical café racer. This well-known, universal hybrid first emerged in the 1950s yet continues to be built around the world today, enjoying almost marque status. The Norton Featherbed frame was regarded as the best handling item of the day, and the Triton rationale was to combine the ''best engine'' with the ''best frame'' by replacing the standard Norton engine with Triumph parallel twin engine. A popular engine choice was the Triumph Bonneville unit with twin carburettors and twin camshafts. This pushrod engine gave good performance and reliability and could be more easily tuned for greater power using high-profile camshafts, high compression pistons and twin carburettors. In due course, a Weslake 8-valve head became available for the Triumph motor. The Triton, synonymous with the Mods and Rockers era has been a continuous symbol of teenage rebellion and 60 years after its conception the Triton is still the most celebrated British twin special, making its way into period meets and cafe race weekends. Every example is unique depending on spares availability, tanks varied as did side panels and seats. This particular example is an extremely pleasing conglomeration of Norton Feather bed frame, Triumph 6T (Thunderbird unit) 650cc engine and slimline tank. On inspection this is very much an older build, dated 1969 on the V5 and with correct period fittings, this is a rare opportunity to purchase a proper Triton built at the time of the 'Rockers on Rockets'. A very well presented cafe racer without the clip on bars making riding a more relaxed experience. Unusually this machine has a genuine aluminium slimline tank and not the common fibreglass tank that many later Tritons were fitted with. Paintwork is extremely nice, chrome and stainless also presented well as are the engine casings and wheel rims, sitting on good tyres and period seat is in nice used condition. Mechanically there is no record of works completed but runs sweetly and changes up and down the gears extremely well. Tritons vary enormously depending on the owner's personal taste, this example is a very smart and well put together machine ready for the road with a tank of fresh fuel. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Older restoration, paintwork and chrome work good. Starts and runs well. Gears select smoothly. Registered Category C. (Damaged but repairable) no sign of damage.

^ Scott Super Squirrel Registration Number: UA7497 First Registered: 01-03-1929 Engine Size: 596cc Colour: Black Engine Number: Y3421A Frame Number: 2738 V5C present The Scott Motorcycle company was founded in 1901 by Yorkshireman, Alfred Angas Scott. He built his first engine in 1901 and set the pattern for most Scotts from then on, for his twin cylinder two-stroke . He fitted it to his Premier bicycle in front of the head stock, from where it drove the from wheel by a belt. From then on Scott developed a twin cylinder two-stroke with a central flywheel, at that time in 1904, a might 333cc. The concept for his machines remained the same for many years sporting a two speed gearbox. Alfred Scott submitted several works machines in to the TT from as early as 1909 with one of his bikes and later setting the fastest lap in 1911. Scott went on to repeatedly set records and have multiple wins at the TT, with iconic works riders just as Frank Applebee and Tim Wood. After Scott's untimely death in 1923, the company went on to develop larger machines but based on the same mechanical concept. This wonderful bike offered is an example of such a machine. With its 596cc engine and light frame, the Scott Flying Squirrel Sports was an extremely competitive machine keeping up with the new breed of OHC bikes in their day. The Scott is a credit to its owner, sporting huge originality, correctness and mechanically appears to be in fine condition, with good compression. The paintwork is still to a very good standard and although has been dry stored for some years shows no signs of deterioration. A fine, rare machine ready for light recommissioning. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Later restoration, paint ok with some micro blistering. Chrome good. Engine and gearbox casings tarnished but good. Dry stored for recommissioning.

^ Triumph NSD Registration Number: YV1839 First Registered: 29-03-1930 Engine Size: 549cc Colour: Black Engine Number: 302249 Frame Number: 2009419 V5C present From the same collection as the Vincent we are proud to offer this fine example of Triumph's rare 550cc NSD. De luxe. By 1930 Triumph apparently realized that they were well behind the fashion of the time, which was sloping engined machines. Thus 1930 saw the replacement of the Model NSD by the Model NSD de Luxe, although the 'de Luxe' was soon dropped. The 'tinware' of the De Luxe model was that of the earlier Model NSD, but with a very different 'inclined' engine, as Triumph would have it instead of 'sloping'. This meant that there also needed to be a new frame in order to accommodate the new engine, and the bike took on a very different appearance. With is larger side valve engine, three speed box and power now up to 5.49hp this model paved the way for the more sporting machines of the 1930s. This particular example is in fine condition with evidence of older restoration. With original tin ware and correct engine numbers, it shows incredible originality. Paintwork and chrome fittings are in very good order and again like other bikes from this collection has positive compression and mechanically appears to be very well maintained. A very rare Triumph indeed from a good home, ready for gentle recommissioning. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Later restoration, paint ok with some micro blistering. Chrome good. Engine and gearbox casings tarnished but good. Dry stored for recommissioning.

Mini Mayfair Registration number: G134 LRH First Registered: 11-08-1989 Engine Size: 998cc Colour: Beige Engine Number: 99HE210102183 Chassis Number: SAXXL2S1N20435675 V5C present The Mini was a made by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 until 2000. The original is considered a British icon of the 1960s, and its space-saving front-wheel drive layout allowed 80% of the area of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage influenced a generation of car makers. The vehicle is in some ways considered the British equivalent to its German contemporary the Volkswagen Beetle, which enjoyed similar popularity in North America. In 1999 the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century. This distinctive two-door car was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, and was manufactured at the Longbridge and Cowley plants. We are pleased to offer a stunning and late example of this iconic car showing an incredible 4830 genuine miles on the clock. This one owner Mini has had long term ownership and has spent most of its life dry stored and consequently is in remarkable original condition. With rare automatic transmission and relevant documentation this a remarkable find, described by our department as nothing less than a museum piece. This 1000cc City Model was registered on the 11-08-1989 and it sports Immaculate original bodywork finished in Oyster with grey cloth interior, grey carpets and unmarked headlining. Bodywork is excellent with no rust and excellent original panel fit. The original rear sub-frame looks to be in excellent order and the car has never been welded, It is indeed a true time warp with very low mileage! A large history file accompanies the Mini complete with handbooks, old MOTs and service receipts. Still on the original Pirelli Cinturato tyres - the spare wheel and tyre is new and unused. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Paintwork very good. Interior very good with little wear. Displays incredible originality. Runs well and automatic gearbox changes smoothly. Tyres original from factory and perished though tread good.

Ford Escort Convertible Registration Number: J388 BNG First Registered: 01-08-1991 Mileage: 61112 Engine Size: 1596cc Colour: Red Engine Number: MY72899 ChassisNumber: WF0LXXGKALMY72899 V5C presentThe car included paperwork noting the replacement clutch, timing belt, water pump, waxoil treatment, the original sales brochure and driver's handbook. The Ford Escort was introduced in the United Kingdom at the end of 1967 making its show debut at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968. The Escort was a commercial success in many parts of Western Europe but nowhere more than in the UK, where it was the national best seller of the 1960's. In June 1974, less than six years after the car's UK introduction, Ford announced the completion of the two millionth Ford Escort, a milestone unmatched by any Ford model outside the USA. Of the many Escort models made, their convertible was a European wide success, in XR3 and standard 1.6 and 1.8i form, they represented and were driven by the young, cool 1980s driver, from the stockbroker to the cafe owner. Examples are rare now, especially with low miles and original paint work. This one is no exception, with a good interior and very clean hood. Showing 61,000 miles believed to be genuine. For auction with a very realistic and tempting estimate and just in time for summer. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. 1975 MGB Roadster Registration number: HKO 823N Date of first registration: 01-04-1975 Vin number: GHN5-371669G Engine number: BHM1111ET08557 Engine size: 1798cc Colour: Red MOT expiry: March 2020 V5C present listing 11 former keepers Current mileage shown: 10955 In structure the MGB was an innovative, modern design in 1962, utilizing a monocoque structure instead of the traditional body-on-frame construction used on both the MGA and MG T-types. The roadster was the first of the MGB range to be produced. The body was a pure two-seater; a small rear seat was a rare option at one point. By making better use of space the MGB was able to offer more passenger and luggage accommodation than the earlier MGA while being 3 inches (75 mm) shorter overall. The suspension was also softer, giving a smoother ride, and the larger engine gave a slightly higher top speed. This MGB is in excellent condition as the current owner has spent time and money on restoring it to a high standard including engine tuning, a new interior, new windscreen and, a fresh coat of paint. Comes with a V5C and a long MOT. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot

Lot 277

Sunbeam Rapier Registration Number: GHN 631D First Registered: 01-01-1966 Mileage: 94366 Engine Size: 1725cc Colour: Red Engine Number: B325000214 Chassis Number: BB250002140DHS0 V5C present Announced at the London Motor Show of 1955, the Sunbeam Rapier was the first of a new range of Rootes cars that was to include the Hillman Minx and the Singer Gazelle. A complete departure from the Sunbeam MKIII it replaced, it was a modern-looking two-door, four-seater Coupe with such standard equipment as leather trim and overdrive. The bodies were built by Pressed Steel, shipped to Thrupp & Maberly in London for painting and trimming and then moved to the Rootes plant at Ryton-on-Dunsmore for final assembly. Though initially a little underpowered, the Rapier had inherently excellent handling and was quickly adopted for rallying. Indeed the launch of the Series II version took place at the end of the 1958 Monte Carlo Rally in which Peter Harper's Works Rapier had finished fifth overall. Over its twenty-one year reign, the model progressed through five series, the swansong being the Series V derivative introduced in 1965. Though visually almost identical to its predecessor, it was notable for its larger, five-bearing engine of 1725cc capacity. Just 3,759 Series Vs were built, making it the rarest of all versions of the model. This example on offer is presented in original 'Pippin' red and has been the subject of a light restoration. The interior can only be described as delightful with recently recovered seats in correct Blenheim Black vinyl. Dash and instrumentation are correct with all dials appearing to work well, complete with period radio . The engine has been professionally restored using a replacement engine block, re-bored with new Hepolite pistons fitted, camshaft bearings, crankshaft bearings, timing chain, cam followers and core plugs. The transmission benefits from new centre clutch plate, master and slave cylinder, full oil seal kit and half shaft oil seal kit. The brake system has had a complete overhaul including wheel cylinders, shoes and servo assembly. A fine example of this rare sixties two door coupe in fabulous condition internally and externally and with its powerful 1725cc engine with overdrive performs better than most cars of its era and was subsequently used successfully Europe wide in motorsport events proving itself as an extremely competitive and robust competition entry. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Recent restoration including paintwork to a good standard. Re trimmed seats in very good order. Interior clean. Comprehensive mechanical restoration and upgrades (see related paperwork). Tyres and wheels in good order. Starts and drives well.

Lot 278

Morris Oxford Flatnose. 'Judges car' Registration Number: FH 4674 First Registered: 10-01-1927 Engine Size: 1701cc Colour: Blue/Black Engine Number: 195653 Chassis Number: 173833 V5C present Morris Motors limited, a privately owned company, formed in 1919. Incredible by 1926 it's production represented 42 percent of the British car industry. One off coach built cars were rare by Morris and its with great delight that can offer this wonderful example. This rare Morris was purpose built by the company for a London judge on the Oxford Circuit. This is a true one off, the body being raised by 150-200 mm higher than standard, widened axle and rear wings with indents in the wings to give the rear doors maximum opening for easy access. Ironically the rear seats are raised to give a seating position of height and superiority, much as the judge himself would have been used to in his place of session. Other unusual aspects include, opening roof and a unique suspension set up using Horstman coil suspension, and probably the only Morris in existence to have this fitted. All modifications were carried out to enable the judge to proceed from his chambers to court while dressed in his ceremonial wig and full canonicals. On inspection this rare car is in exceptional condition which reflects a comprehensive but sympathetic restoration program by the current owner. The body previously removed for the purpose of chassis restoration, all large components, blasted and professionally painted. Engine and all mechanical items refurbished, new clutch, wiring, new radiator core, brakes, tyres and tubes. The interior professionally reupholstered, new German nickel plated radiator cowl and bright work, glass upgraded to laminate and all the woodwork refinished to a high standard. To finish the car has had a full re-wire and a first class paint job in blue over black. To accompany the Morris is a large history file , and photographic restoration record , original green logbook and current V5C. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a unique and historically important Morris Oxford, comprehensively restored at vast expense and ready to enjoy. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Older comprehensive restoration. Very good paint with minor blemishing. Good re-trimmed interior. Nickel and chrome work in good order with minor tarnishing. Good tyres. Starts and runs well.

Lot 281

Morris Minor Traveller Registration number: WCG 837H First Registered: 29-95-1970 Mileage: 22845 Engine Size: 1098cc Colour: Grey Engine Number: 10V189EH43220 Chassis Number: MAW5D1275146 V5C present Following the end of the Second World War the Morris Motors company were working on a new small car model. Designed by Alec Issigonis, the Morris Minor was unveiled to the public at London's Earls Court Motor Show at the end of October 1948. At launch the Morris Minor cost £358 10s 7d. When the Traveller was launched in 1953, it was pretty unusual. Estate cars were fairly rare, while small estate cars were almost unthinkable. Even 'Woodies' were generally just for the elite to go hunting in on their large estates. The Traveller was a pioneer, albeit one that clung onto ancient technology - for rather than a van with seats and windows, it was a proper, timber-framed utility vehicle based on saloon underpinnings. Nowadays the iconic Morris Minor Traveller has won the hearts of many with its recognisable and almost prewar front end and distinctive woody rear is probably one of the most popular and affordable British classic cars. Practical and with good spares availability and extremely reliable and simple to work on. This 1970 example has been the subject of a recent extensive restoration which has resulted in the most wonderful example . All important woodwork has been professionally renewed with seasoned Ash, any rust issues have been dealt with and the car has been painted to a very high standard in period blue grey. Showing only 22,845 miles (not warranted) but condition suggests little use. The interior is remarkably original with seats and headlining in very good condition. Internal paintwork clean and instrumentation correct and in working order. With long term family ownership and some history this really is a fine example of this period woody estate. Due to its condition and originality this is an opportunity to purchase a car with all the usual Minor Traveller issues sorted, ready to use and show. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Recent restoration, excellent paint, excellent woodwork. Predominantly original interior in clean condition. Tyres and wheels in good order. Runs and drives well.

Lot 282

Austin Seven AEW Sports Special Registration number: YVS573 First Registered: 1936 Engine Size: 749cc Colour: Maroon and black Engine Number: M290024 Chassis Number: 259536 V5C present In 1932 a coachbuilder called A.E.Wright at Bedford Garage, Beford Road, Alexandra Park, London started building bodies on new Standard Austin seven chassis. Modelled on similar specials like Swallow, Arrow and Gordon England it was Wright's attempt of a close coupled two seater sports which would potentially take a slice of the increasing affordable open sports market many car producers were trying to tap into. The AEW was a pretty little car with cut away sides and light body giving it type 65 looks but at a greatly reduced price tag due to construction on standard high chassis. Performance was significantly better than a standard Seven and with its folding windscreen and louvred bonnet had real sporty appeal. Unfortunately Wright's exploits were short lived due to the ever increasing competition and production costs, cars were made in low numbers approximately around 200, and very few survive today. It is said that this example offered is one left of four known. This rare survivor was discovered in 1993 in a farm yard . In barn find condition, ripe for restoration but remained complete with original engine, bodywork and factory fittings. Over the next few years it was subject to a full and detailed restoration by the discerning and knowledgeable owner who embarked on comprehensive strip down, refurbishing every aspect of the car but keen to keep as much originality as possible. Finished in maroon over black and can only by described as in fantastic condition, is a joy to drive. With its responsive rebuilt 750cc engine, four speed box and great lines will turn heads at any event. Given the car's rarity and history (we believe there are only two surviving two-seat AEGs) it is an obvious choice for the collector who loves all things Austin Seven, but craves something a little different from the many standard tourers and box saloons out there, but for very similar money. Sold with a large history file, photographic record and handbook she is ready to drive away, show or compete in club events. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Recent restoration, paintwork good, paint flat on bonnet top. Interior re-trimmed to high standard. Hood in excellent order. New tyres. Starts and drives well.

Lot 287

Clément-Bayard Registration Number: G 5391 First Registered: 01-01-1921 (Manufactured 1914) Engine Size: 1056cc Colour: Green and Black Engine Number: LM3B21069 Chassis Number: 4M3B21069 V5C present Automobile pioneer and racer Adolphe Clément first made bicycles and, later, cars and aircraft. Born at Pierrefonds in the Oise district of France, in 1894 he set himself up in Charleville in Paris with his first bicycle factory ''La Macerienne'', as he named it. At first he made only components, then followed with Clément bicycles. The motor cars came in 1899, financed by the considerable fortune Clément had amassed from his bicycle business and his acquisition of the exclusive rights to Dunlop pneumatic tyres in France. Clément was also successful in plane and airship production. The initial model range comprised three models (9Hp, 12Hp, 16Hp) and was enhanced in 1904 with a 6Hp single-cylinder, a 7Hp twin-cylinder, and 14Hp, 20Hp & 27Hp 4-cylinders. In 1910 Clément-Bayard started to manufacture a stylish, low cost, small, two-seater roadster, with a 4-cylinder 10/12hp, and a heater for the driver and passenger. It was very popular, and production continued until the outbreak of war in 1914. Tennants are extremely honoured to offer this rare and beautiful example of Clément-Bayard's four cylinder tourer manufactured in 1914. In 1978 the car was proudly featured in the film 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' starring Robert Powell. The car was used as the getaway car from the village hall scene. This very early car was registered in Glasgow in 1914 and has, by all accounts, spent all its life in Scotland. When discovered many decades ago it was 95% complete, and with matching engine and chassis numbers was a rare find indeed. The restoration was a straightforward one focusing on recommissioning and painting, not major fabrication and the addition of any non-standard and difficult to source fixtures and fittings. Some of the wonderful originality can be viewed simply by raising the period Dickey seat, still with early leather and mechanism, it is an example of how the previous owner was passionate about maintaining the car's integrity. Of the very few early Clément-Bayards known, a great deal are the earlier and less powerful twin cylinder models. This particular example sports the sought-after four cylinder engine which makes the car extremely usable on the open road and giving it every chance of completing the many Edwardian regularity runs every year. This indeed represents the exotic and rare end of the spectrum as a VCC entrant and attracts crowds wherever it goes. Finished in striking green over black and painted in its correct craft master style coach paint with an array of brass brightwork, the Clément, now 105 years old, is as usable and mechanically sound as it would have been post-manufacture.
