Interesting recipe book, most likely containing (secret) recipes from the distillery Weduwe A. v.d. Eelaart (Drie Sterren) in Schiedam (see below). The manuscript starts with recipes for colours that can be produced, for instance "Caramel. Caramelkleurpoeder van Polak's Frutal Works 50 gram op 1 liter water" or "Oranje. Oranjekleurpoeder "Extra" Polak's Frutal Works 50 gram op 1 liter water". The manuscript contains descriptions of the techniques "overhalen", "versnijden" and "filtreren" and a number of recipes, for example: "Gebeide jenever. (50%). Recept M. Nov. '46. Vul de ketel met 21 vat jenever van 38%. Voeg hier aan toe 140 kg jeneverbessen (in zakken). Laat het geheel 7 dagen trekken, onder dagelijks doorroeren. Langzaam en voorzichtig afstoken! (2 dagen). Wijziging: Inplaats van 140 kg bessen 250 kg voor sterker aftrek." Similar recipes for Jenever "Friesland" type, Jenever Concentraat "Algiers", Oude Jenever "Drie Sterren", Oude aromatische jenever, Rijnbende's "Oude Schiedammer", Weduwe Elaart's Zeer oude jenever, Inmaak brandewijn, Vodka Bjelspolskaja, Cognac Fine champagne, Cognac type Coebergh April 1964, (...) Loosely inserted in the recipe book are two smaller school-notebooks filled w. similar manuscript recipies (incl. recipes dating from the 1930s), some loose recipes, col. lithogr. labels (incl. many duplicates) and two interesting, very rare booklets: (1) Prijscourant van Weduwe A. v.d. Chais (1762-1840, secretary of the Hoge Raad van Adel), M.W. Baron van Westreenen Van Tiellandt (1783-1848, founder of the Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum) and J.G. de Mey van Streefkerk (1782-1841, secretary to the King), finely calligraphic text surrounding the coat of arms of the Behault family in gouache and gold, w. large attached wax royal seal, rolled in the original tin holder. A very nice example of an original Diploma of Nobility, in perfect condition and with the orig. holder preserved, which is very rare.

Lot 239

Printed "Kas-noot", recto with the denomination "Goed voor 4 Ryxsds:" in Dutch, Sinhala and Tamil typeset, within border and V.O.C. marks and the arms of Colombo in corners, and with the signature in pen of the last governor of the island Johan Gerard van Angelbeek (1794-96), Abraham Samlant (Negotie Boekhouder) and 1 unidentified signature, verso dated in print "Kolombo den 1. January 1796", and w. manuscript "N. Eight. Bearing interest 3 p.cent p. annum" above black rectangular stamped seal of Colonel James Stuart in the middle of signature George Gregory in pen (see explanation below), 8.8 x 10.4 cm. Middle fold, some pinholes and tiny tears. Not in Landwehr, V.O.C. Extremely rare "Kas noot", which remained valid for 116 years, and this copy has not been cancelled (see the two examples of "Kredit brieven" in this auction). Noted in pen on the tiny leaf are only 5 dates at which the interest was actually paid, from 15 February 1864 to 15 February 1868. Possibly, the note still retains its value for the British state; we could not verify this. The history of this "Kas noot": "After the British Invasion of Ceylon in 1795 the Dutch surrendered to the British, Trincomalee on 1795 August 26th, Jaffna on 1795 September 27th. Doubts arose among the populace about the ability of the Dutch Government to redeem the Kredit Brieven owing to the threatened investment of Colombo by the British. By Plakaat of 1795 December 18th Notice was given to issue Paper Money of smaller denominations 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 Rix-Dollars. Called Kas Nooten the notes were issued dated 1796 January 1st. The British under Article 6 of the Capitulation of Colombo, on 1796 February 15th accepted the liability for up to £50,000 (i.e. 468,750 Ryxd) of Kredit Brieven and Kas Nooten still in Circulation and pay interest at 3% per Annum, payable half yearly. Notes [including ours] were Endorsed in English in pen with 3 percent p. annum on this Kredit Brief payable by the British Government of Ceylon under the condition of the Sixth article of the Capitulation of Columbo and on back of Kas Nooten Bearing Interest 3 percent for Annum. Below a Black rectangular Seal of COL.STUART with Persian text in middle of Signature Geo. Gregory over Reg. Colonel James Stuart led the British troops to take Ceylon from the Dutch. George Gregory was collector for Colombo for the British. (...) The Dutch promissory notes taken over by the British Government in 1796, were never called in. (...) After obtaining the approval of the Secretary of State and protracted negotiations with the holders the Government bought in the 130 [remaining] notes in 1912, for a sum of Rs. 13,890 and cancelled them, thus wiping off finally a permanent charge on public funds." (Dutch Ceylon Paper Money 1785-96, online article). "The proclamation [of December 18th, 1795] rehearses that owing to the threatened investment of Colombo by the British doubts had arisen among the populace about the ability of the Government to redeem the Kredit Brieven and reassures them on this issue. As the Kredit Brieven was for large payments, the Kas Nooten (currency notes) were issued for the convenience of the public, redeemable in the same way, but not endorsed." (Dutch Ceylon 1796 Kolumbo Kas Nooten, illustrated online article). We thank Burgersdijk and Niermans for their help with this description and that of the two similar other V.O.C. items in this auction.

Letter of credit issued by the Dutch East India Company, bifolium w. letterpress text in Dutch, Sinhala and Tamil typeset, signed by the last governor of the island, Johan Gerard van Angelbeek (1794-96), by T.G. Hofland (according to Ceylon Coins and Currencies "Negotie boekhouder") and by 1 more person, unidentified, w. black rectangular stamped seal of Colonel James Stuart in the middle of signature George Gregory in pen (see explanation below), 24.5 x 16.5 cm. Folded, minimal other imperfections. Landwehr, V.O.C. 1099 (two copies, 1 in the Netherlands and 1 in Sri Lanka, ostensibly not filled out). Extraordinary and very rare early "banknote", which remained valid for 117 years. In September 2017 a copy was auctioned off in London. The history of this letter of credit: "After the British Invasion of Ceylon in 1795 the Dutch surrendered to the British, Trincomalee on 1795 August 26th, Jaffna on 1795 September 27th. Doubts arose among the populace about the ability of the Dutch Government to redeem the Kredit Brieven owing to the threatened investment of Colombo by the British. (Dutch Ceylon Paper Money 1785-96, online article). From 15 February 1796 up to 1912 the note retained its value for the British state. All this has been noted on the banknote, as its validity had to be extended annually by hand. The note (apparently one of 130 copies still in circulation by 1912) is therefore abundantly covered with these extensions, also on page 2 of the bifolium (together with transfer registrations by name). The stamp "Cancelled' has been applied to the printed side and on p. 2. We thank Burgersdijk and Niermans for their help with this description and that of the two other V.O.C. letters of credit in this auction.

The very rare original edition of this mathematical treatise, with all but plate Z1 conforming to the binder's index. We could not verify (no copies with plates digitized online), but we suspect that plate Z1 was executed in pen in all copies, due to the layering of the plate and a description on page 60. A nice element of this edition are the puns: the name of the author on the title page (in a special diamond shape) and on the praise poem, where every letter of Van Dycke's full name is used as the first letter of a stanza (see images). Very rare treatise on surveying art.
