Robin Tanner (1904-1988) - 'June', the outskirts of a village with a hay meadow in the foreground, cottages and haystacks in the distance, inscribed with the artist's name within the margin, in pencil, black and white drypoint etching, 5.5" x 6.5" - **Robin Tanner was an English artist, etcher and print maker. He followed in the visionary tradition of Samuel Palmer and English neo-romanticism. The artist was inspired primarily by Samuel Palmer, particularly his early Shoreham works. Possibly from the edition published in 1928 by Nicholson, however further editions were published by the Print Room in 1974 and by Garton & Cooke, in 1984. The complete set in its original portfolio case is extremely rare and worth in the region of £15000
La Nation, La Loi Le Roi: A Rare French Printed Fan, with a hand coloured scene of four members of the nobility around a table, playing piquet. Close to the table is a plaque with the words ''La Nation, La Loi, Le Roi, a Phrygian cap atop the pole, and a pink ribbon above with wording printed rather indistinctly perhaps ''Le ?uet National''. The players consist of Le Prince de Conde, le Compte D'Artois and Mirabeau-Tonneau, the fourth player perhaps being the king, in robes and fur. To the sides, eight verses of a song originating from their conversation about diplomacy and the Constitution, to be performed to the Air ''Le Piquet m'est agreeable''. France c 1788. Guard length 11 inches of 28cm. Provenance: the collection of the late Dr Paul van Saanen. Mirabeau-Tonneau (translated as ''the wine barrel,'' and note that the character to the left is seated on such a barrel), was Andre-Boniface-Louis, Vicomte de Mirabeau (1754 to 1792), the brother of the great orator, the son of the economist, and one of the leading Royalists in the Assemblée. Generally in good order.
The Royal Family Visiting Paris: A Rare circa 1789 Printed Fan, of the French Revolutionary period, the double paper leaf mounted on plain wooden sticks, a central hand coloured engraving showing the arrival by carriage of the Royal Family, guards in attendance as they passed through the streets. The side vignettes, bordered in yellow, contain four verses of the song "Ma Doris un Jour s'Egara". A Rare Mid-18th Century Fan, depicting an Allegory of Trade, showing King George III in regal robes seated on a throne surrounded by Neptune, Mercury, Mars and Britannia, tall ships and Father Thames. Above the throne, draped in red, the Lion and Unicorn support the coat of arms of the United Kingdom. The ivory monture is carved (note the designs when closed and laid on one side), pierced and painted with Chinoiserie and detailed flowers. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, is printed and hand coloured. The verso shows Britannia with her shield. Guard length 11 inches or 29cm An example of this fan was sold in Christie's SK on the 13th December 1994. Estimated at £1000 to £1500, it sold for £3800 hammer. It was featured on the back cover of the catalogue. Miss Mayor noted that the figure of George III looks remarkably like his father Frederick Prince of Wales. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm. Good colour, good overall condition. When closed, one guard can be seen to be curved inwards. Holding to the light, a tear to one fold is visible part way down and just above Father Thames' head. Some slight discolouration to the same side of the leaf and some slight nibbles to the tops of some folds. Some brown marking, see mid verso. The gorge sticks are generally in pairs save for the outer left side.
A Rare and Very Early Chinese Ivory Fan, the guards painted in the Imari porcelain style, the gorge sticks simply carved and pierced. The double paper leaf is painted in strong shades of red, blue and green with a central depiction of a European couple amongst flowers and foliage, the gentleman offering a drink to his lady whilst holding her hand, a small dog in the background. The verso presents a mirror image. Most unusually the leaf is cut out at intervals in order to insert panels of mica. The very tip of the head is squared off and shaped. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm Provenance: The Collection of Colin Lawton Johnson. Sold at Christie's SK on May 22nd 1996, lot 171, where it was described as a ''rare miniature mica fan ''and estimated at ''1000.00 to £2000.00 and achieving £2600 hammer. See also page 83 of ''Fans'' by Nancy Armstrong, where the fan is described as late 17th century or early 18th century.. Generally good, the monture appears sound, the bottom edge of the leaf seen from the verso is slightly faded, and all folds are slightly rubbed.
A Rare Early 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, with hair contained in compartments on each guard. The fan presents many unusual features. Each guard is carved in honeycomb fashion in the top section and the sides are piqué. Each compartment containing hair, is bordered in a bronze metal. The twenty-two inner sticks are all pierced in both overall patterns and into ovals of differing sizes. The upper tips are scalloped, and the design in the tips is of large leaves. Some light colour has been applied so that some of the designs appear as light ginger against the cream ivory. Guard length 7 inches or 18cm. there is very slight loss to one stick very near the centre.
A Rare Pale Horn Spyglass Fan Clouté With Steel, Small, circa 1810 to 1820, the carved and pierced horn elaborately shaped presenting an attractive fan whether open or closed. The spyglass located in the centre is contained in a gold metal frame. Note the fan shapes on the outer border. Length when closed approx. 5.5 inches or 14cm. A Rare Art Nouveau Double Image Fan, the shaped monture of pink mother-of-pearl, gilded, the shaped gorge a particular element of the overall design. The leaf is formed from various components to facilitate the design, and is in some sections backed with stiffened cream gauze or similar fabric. The main part of the fan, painted, is possibly vellum. The stiffened gauze is used for the areas printed with bobbin lace. The central scene and the oval beneath it are formed of mica or similar to create windows, through which can be seen various gentlemen peering into the house. From the verso, these men can be seen from behind, full form. At each side is a further window and a balcony, these being created from the gauze alone. Below the balcony scene is a further area which is embroidered with yellow thread and tiny gold sequins to look like a lattice. The various ladies, sumptuously dressed in 18th century sack-back robes, or robes a la polonaise, are seemingly beset by suitors. A kitten rolls around the salon floor playing with beads or threads. Signed under the balcony scene, A. Lafite? Contained in a plain dark green fan box, unlabelled. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. very good, especially considering the complexity of the workmanship. One fold noted as repaired with conservation fabric from behind. Broken upper guard.
The Thomasse Swan: A Rare Early 20th Century Fan by Alfonse Thomasse, the fan leaf artist with a penchant for bird and animal subjects. The monture, of pale horn, with serpentine guards, is signed on the verso ''Duvelleroy''. The double silk leaf, painted in gentle colours with a swan on the water, amongst reeds, is embellished with tiny gold sequins to the central top sections, with green and gold sequins outlining the water lily flower and green for the flat leaves and reeds. The signature A. Thomasse is to be found under the water lily leaf to the right. The verso is plain. Contained in a fan box covered in floral woven silk, lined in cream silk, and embossed in gold script inside the lid for Geslin, 20 Passage des Princes. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm Previously in the collection of Georgette Tilly. A repair noted to the upper guard in line with the signature. One of the central folds is wearing a bit thin, but holding. Some light staining to the verso. Top and bottom borders very very slightly fraying, more to the backing silk layer.
A Rare French Fan, circa 1890's, the ivory monture shaped like a dagger or sword hilt. The head, intricately carved and shaped and set with an opaque stone, the gorge and lower guards shaped only at the shoulder, but the upper part of the guards carved to catch the eye with a bulbous section carved in layers, more detail to tip and junction, with a column-like and elegant section culminating in a pipe-playing cherub carved in relief, atop a pedestal. A closer look at this shape shows that the fan is made to emulate a dagger, with the bulbous part the handle. The lower guard matches, save for the cherub playing a different instrument. The silk leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, is painted in pastel colours with an amusing scene of ''Marionettes de l'Amour'', a puppet theatre with three puppets on the ''stage'', plus a white cat perched on a red velvet cushion. The ''audience'' consists of six rather chubby winged cherubs, one having sneaked under the curtain of the theatre, one pointing at a puppet as if a teacher pointing at a blackboard, the others taking it all in, one to the left with his tongue protruding. Signed, under the cherubs to the left, Aman Cyboulle, a French artist who exhibited at The Salon 1868-1880. The recto is completed with a simple border to the edges and some details in the corners. The verso is plain save for some detail to the corners and simple flower sprays. Contained in a card fan box covered in cerise silk and inscribed in gold for Duvelleroy Regent Street W. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm See a similar fan, painted by a different artist but with the same monture, sold in the ''Earth to Fire'' sale at Sotheby's London in May 1st 2018, lot 307. Estimated at £600 to £700 it achieved £1500.00 hammer.. It is somewhat of a miracle that the carving that protrudes on the guards in undamaged. The fan is generally clean and in good order.

A rare Victorian Albert chain with dip pen and travelling inkwell combination, ingenious idea, the five tubular sections slot together to form the body of the pen, the fourth piece has a pull-out section hiding the pen nib and is reversed and slotted back in, thus allowing the pen to be used, each section is linked by interior chain, the T-Bar end has the attached barrel form inkwell attachment that's stamped, 'PATENT N.L.F'. *Condition: the tip of the third tubular section is missing, not allowing the next section to fully slot together (easy to repair) pen still workable, some plate loss.
