Singleton (After Henry, 1766-1839) [The Passion of the Soul, and the Anatomy of The Human Face, Delineated in a series of Twenty-four Chalk Engraved Heads], 16 physiognomical portraits, stipple-engravings printed in black, engraved by Charles Knight, on J. Whatman wove paper, several watermarked with date: '1809', presented alongside three original, individually hand-numbered, engraved brown paper wrappers, plate marks each c.: 325 x 235 mm. (12 3/4 x 9 1/4 in), sheets: 480 x 340 mm. (18 7/8 x 13 1/2 in), loose, minor handling creases, some minor surface dirt, the wrappers worn, [cf. Abbey Life 188], published by S. & J. Fuller, 1815 Provenance:Ex-collection of Richard L. Burnett Esq., UK⁂ A rare, albeit incomplete, suite published after William Frederick Well's circa 1800 publication of the same name (presumably from the [?] same plates, see: Abbey Life 188). The British Museum hold only five of the portraits published in 1815 (see acc. no.: 1870,0514.1689), as well a further five from the Well's edition; the complete series from 1815 appears little recorded, and no mention is made in Abbey.

Number I, title with woodcut ornament, wormhole turning into worm trace, affecting a few letters or the odd word respectively, some staining or foxing, modern wrappers with typed label to upper wrapper, [Not in Fussell], 8vo, Dublin, printed by George Faulkner, 1745.⁂ 'Letters warning of the threat to the constitution and liberty posed by Rome (i.e. Popery) and the Stuart pretender to the British throne' (ESTC). Rare at auction.

The City Charltonian Cricket Club, 'second edition', vignette illustration to title, light soiling, lacking front free endpaper, original pictorial cloth, gilt, rubbed, sm.4to, 1857.⁂ A rare book of verses addressed to the Charlton Cricket Club, we can trace only the MCC copy, and no record of the first edition. One of the poems, Eleven, runs though the club members, including mention of George Wisden, brother of John.

Dupuis (François) Cathena Aurea Super Psalmos, collation: AA8 BB4 a-y8 A-Q8 R6, double column, Gothic type, printed in red and black, title with woodcut printer's device at foot, full-page woodcut of King David at his harp to verso of BB4, handsome woodcut criblé initials, early ink marginalia, p3&4 upper corners torn away, with loss of part of a side-note on p3, wormholes within text, some staining, mostly marginal, contemporary blind-stamped panelled calf over wooden boards, rebacked in 20th century calf, some loss of calf on covers, corners repaired, 4to (253 x 176mm.), Paris, Jean Petit, March, 1520.⁂ First edition of these commentaries on the Psalms, by the Carthusian Dupuis, handsomely printed in Paris. Rare at auction. Literature: Adams P2294 (under Puteo).

Whistled by a Sea Lark, first edition, hand-coloured wood-engraved frontispiece, B5 small section of blank lower corner torn away, some spotting, lightly browned, contemporary half calf, spine gilt and with red morocco label, rubbed, 8vo, 1815.⁂ A rare satire on naval life. Upon being asked by a bookseller to whom he had offered the work for publication whether the work was in the manner of Doctor Syntax the author replied 'No, Sir, it is not like Doctor Syntax; Paddy Hew would be ashamed to be seen in the same filed with such a milksop'.

India.- Anville (Jean Baptiste Bourgignon d') A Geographical Illustration of the Map of India, edited by William Herbert, first English edition, title in red and black, folding engraved map of the river Indus hand-coloured in outline and large folding engraved map of India, map of Indus with small hole, large map with small tears to folds and heavily soiled in strip across foot with hole (c.1cm2) to tip of Ceylon, some other light soiling, text trimmed, modern morocco, 4to, for the Editor but with slip "Sold by Henry Gregory, mathematical Instrument-maker..." pasted over imprint, 1759.⁂ Rare; we have been unable to find any auction record. ESTC lists UK copies only in the British Library and Royal Geographical Society Library, and 2 in America; COPAC lists 4 UK locations (BL, Cambridge, Manchester University and National Library of Scotland.

It is documented that cricket was played at White Conduit Fields until 1786 when Thomas Lord found an alternative venue now known as Lord's Old Ground. The depiction of cricket being played with three stumps, curved bats and with under arm bowling dates the subject matter to around this time, as three stumps were introduced circa 1775.Prov: This has been in the vendor's family for at least three generationsSome areas of restoration and over painting over all, surface losses of various ages and degrees - flaking, bumps, scratches, surface crackelure, areas of re-varnishing etc, discolouration overallAlthough in need of attention, cricket depictions are fairly rare.
