Bristol Broadside - Conjoined Twins. The Bristol Wonder; or the Wonderfull Works of God. Giving a True and Particular Account, of a Child that was Born Wednesday the 19th day of March, 1788 in the Parish of Redcliff, having 4 Arms 4 Hands 20 Fingers, 4 Thighs 4 Legs 4 Feet 3 Ears 2 Private Parts and 20 Toes. (Nothing is Impossible to God), [?Bristol, 1788], woodcut (57 x 60mm) of the child centred within text below title, the main text continuing, ‘On Wednesday morning last, Elizabeth the Wife of Edward Holdingbrook, a Journeyman Millwright, who lives at the corner of George’s Street, the bottom of Redcliff Hill, near the Distillery Bedminster Causeway, was safely delivered by Mr. Short, Surgeon and Man-Midwife, of Clare Street, Bristol, of the Male Infant, still Born - which had one Head, a Nose, a Mouth, Two Eyes, Three Ears, A Neck and Breast, but in other parts a perfect Twin... , This Wonderfull Production of Human Nature is now preserved fit for the Inspection of the Curious, and we are happy to add that the Mother of the said Infant, is in a fair way of Recovery. Several of the Learned Faculty who beheld it, judged it to precede from the Redundance of the Seed but there not being enough for Twins; Nature formed what she could, and so made the most of it, by which we may see the Wisdom of Nature, in the formation of the Body of Man’, ending with a six line moral verse, ‘Heaven in our first formation did provide, Two Arms, Two Legs, and what we have beside, Renders us Monstruous and Mishappen too, Nor have we any Work for them to do; Two Arms, Two Legs are all that we can use, And to have more there’s no Wise Man can chuse’, well printed on thin laid paper without watermark, a few minor spots and fold marks, one page, 310 x 220mm. No other copy of this unusual medical broadside has been traced. This rare type of conjoined twin in which the twins share a head and face but have two bodies is now called synecephalus. As in this broadside, the prevailing theory for conjoined twins in the 18th century was that it was the result of the fertilisation of one egg by two sperm. (1)

[Taylor, Jane & Ann]. Signor Topsy-Turvey’s Wonderful Magic Lantern; or, The World turned upside down... Illustrated with Twenty-Four Engravings, 1st ed., printed for Tabart & Co. at the Juvenile and School Library, 1810, pp.71+[1](ads.), eng. frontis. (close-trimmed at top edge clipping image), and twenty-three eng. plts., contents generally browned, and small stain to fore-margin throughout (just clipping edge of images/text in places), a few short edge tears/nicks, mid. 19th c. half calf gilt, lightly rubbed and spine faded, 16mo. Gumuchian 5517; Moon, Benjamin Tabart’s Juvenile Library, 171(1). Extremely rare. Not in Osborne. A curious and amusing little book, which Marjorie Moon calls “an excellent production”. She adds “the verses are neat, pointed and (as may be expected, considering the authors) easily to be understood by children” and she describes the plates (possibly by Isaac Taylor, junior) as “among the more proficient illustrations in children’s books of the period”. The imaginative engravings and accompanying verse are apparently the result of the Magic Lantern operator’s ineptitude as he shows slides upside down, causing humorous reversals of standard roles, such as: ‘Monkey turned Beau’; ‘The Dunce turned Scholar’; ‘The Boy turned Giant’; ‘The Ass turned Miller’; ‘Game turned Sportsman’; ‘Fish out of Water’; ‘The Moon in the Dumps’; and ‘The Horse turned Driver’. In some cases the ludicrous takes on a rather alarming tone, for example, ‘The Cook Cooked’ shows the cook being roasted on a spit by a hare, ‘The Mare turned Farrier’ shows a horse hammering a nail into the farrier’s foot, and ‘The Hogs Court of Inquiry’ shows a number of bewigged hogs presiding over a butcher with bound limbs. Apart from a partial American reprinting in 1811, the book was never published again, in stark contrast to the rest of the Taylor sister’s oeuvre. This may have been in part because Benjamin Tabart was declared bankrupt in 1810, though it still seems surpring that the work was not taken up by another publisher. It seems probable that, despite the moralistic tone of some of the tales, the over-riding theme of anarchy - more subversive than the standard content of early nineteenth century children’s literature - was just too much for contemporary audiences. Gray (Henry). Anatomy, Descriptive and Surgical, 1st ed., 1858, half-title inscribed in contemp. ms. ‘With the Publishers’ Compts’, numerous letterpress engs. by H.V. Carter, pubs. ad. leaf at rear, title-page with early ms. ownership name at head, with portion of blank margin above torn away, occn. minor spotting and off-setting, hinges split, orig. blind-panelled cloth gilt, lightly soiled, extrems. frayed, large 8vo. Garrison Morton 418. The rare first edition of this classic medical text, which has been more widely used by successive generations of medical students and doctors than any other. Celebrated physician Henry Gray (1827-1861) was chiefly engaged in anatomical research and teaching at St. George’s Hospital in London. The ambitious and ebullient surgeon performed the dissections required for the book with his shy and retiring colleague, Henry Vandyke Carter, who provided the exquisitely detailed drawings. On publication the book was immediately acclaimed for its simple layout and clarity. Carter’s hand in its success has always been somewhat overlooked, and indeed, Gray himself requested that Carter’s name appear in smaller print than his own on the title-page. However, Gray died suddenly of smallpox at the age of 34, whereas Carter went on to achieve some modest acclaim for his medical research amongst the poorest people in India. (1)
Turner (Daniel). The Force of the Mother’s Imagination upon her Foetus in Utero, Still Farther Considered: In the Way of a Reply to Dr. Blondel’s Last Book, Entitled The Power of the Mother’s Imagination Over the Foetus Examined, 1st ed., 1730, some spotting and browning, small ink inscription to title, 20th c. calf-backed boards, 8vo. The physician Daniel Turner (1667-1742), considered the founder of British dermatology, engaged in a dispute with James Blondel about the power of the maternal imagination. Turner upheld the long-standing belief that a pregnant woman’s imagination could be transferred to her unborn child with resulting marks and deformities, with Blondel refuting this view on rational and anatomical grounds, highlighting their differences in medical and philosophical theories. Rare, no copy recorded at auction. (1)
