RARE SET OF FOUR SCOTTISH GEORGE IV SILVER ENTREÉ DISHES AND COVERS maker J W Howden & Co, Edinburgh 1820, of rectangular form, double domed lids with cabbage finials, both dishes and covers engraved with coat of arms and motto 'At spes non fracta (But hope is not broken)', each pair of dishes and covers numbered '1-4', approximately 8764g gross, each dish 30cm long Note: McTear's are grateful to the The Royal College of Arms for informing us that these are The Coat of Arms, coronets and supporters of one of the Earls of Hopetoun. These pieces were probably comissioned by General John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun PC KB (17 August 1765 - 27 August 1823), possibly to celebrate his succession in the Earldom in 1816. The fourth Earl died shortly after inheriting the title and was in turn succedded or by his eldest son from his second marriage, John. In 1822 George IV visited Hopetoun House, the seat of the Earls of Hopetoun just outside Edinburgh, at the end of his historic state visit to Scotland and was received by the 4th Earl. The state visit was the first time a reigning British sovereign had visited Scotland for 170 years and it was stage-managed by Sir Walter Scott as an important part of his Romantic Movement in Scotland. Records show that the King arrived at Hopetoun at 1.15pm and after being received by the Earl and Countess he lunched sparingly on turtle soup and three glasses of wine. He then knighted Sir Henry Raeburn, the Scottish portraitist, and Captain Adam Ferguson, Keeper of the Regalia in Scotland, in the Yellow Drawing Room using Lord Hopetoun's sword. At 3pm he made his farewells and made his way by carriage to Port Edgar, just outside South Queensferry, where the Royal Yacht waited to return him to England. It is entirely possible that these impressive dishes were present on the table during the George IV lunch reception in Hopetoun House.

A rare Persian Safavid polychrome porcelain flask, mid 17th Century Of Chinese inspired form, the body of gentle sloped and swelled form with central rounded nodule, surmounted by a tapered short slender neck and terminating at a garlic-head upper rim, all rising from a spreading circular footrim to a short pedestal, the body enamelled with central medallion issuing two double lines in rich underglazed cobalt, extending to a beautifully enamelled concentric band enamelled in sage green and iron-red with five flowerheads borne of leafy meandering tendrils, further reserved against a dense stylized foliate ground, all reserved against a milky white ground, 30.5cm high, paper private collectors label to base PH. ZIEGLER. NB: The Safavid dynasty ruled over Persia for two Centuries (1501-1722), inspiration for form and glaze was greatly taken from the Chinese export wares of the Chinese Yongle period (1403-1424), with rich cobalt saturated glazes and large flowerhead designs, however it wasn't until the change of Dynasty in China in the mid 17th Century when new ceramic designs were seen and would be so influential to Persia, this flask is typical of this period with the juxtaposition of pale green, and red next to typical cobalt, but rarely do such items come to market, with examples being seen in The British Museum and The Louvre in Paris. The history of this important flask is somewhat sparse, it's existence is known for the last fifty years or so, where it has been part of a private Cheshire estate, however prior to this it can not be traced. The private collectors label stating PH. Ziegler is also prevalent as this may be able to provide to insight into this wonderful flask's history. CONDITION REPORT: Provenance: please note there is no provenance documentation that comes with this lot. It is thought that the flask has been in the family for approximately 50 years, however this is just hearsay. Please note the flask is from a deceased estate and therefore no further documentation or information can be obtained. The flask is very much sold on its own. Conditon - The upper rim has a small chip approx 1cm in size. Upper rim and mouth of the flask is covered with a sticky/ waxy substance which looks like it could be removed with cleaning. The neck and body appear to have scratches visible to the glaze. This is most notable in the green and red areas of the flask. The foot shows extensive damage, most notable is a large chip to the foot rim, approx 5cm x 2 cm in size. Several further chips/ nibbles to the entire edge of the foot rim, all show remnants of old pigment, possibly indicating that this area has previously undergone restoration. Underside of foot rim shows hairline cracks to the glaze and old remnants of some form of filler or thick substance in which to adhere to something. Foot rim / stem glazes show scratching. Difficult to get a clear view of the interior however there is rattling when the flask is turned. It is unclear what is inside the flask. Although there is noticeable wear and damage. Viewing of images is strongly recommended.

*Relief of Sir John Franklin. Autograph letter signed by Richard Collinson (1811-1883), 'R. Collinson', no place, no date [end of November, 1856], to the Editor of The Times, 'In your leading article on Thursday relative to the continuance of the search for Sir J. Franklin and his companions you have most unfairly summed up the results of expeditions hitherto sent in quest of our missing countrymen. There is not a doubt that great hardships have been undergone and perils encountered but the assertion that the crews of the abandoned ships were withdrawn by a miracle almost as not warranted by the fact related in the Journals now before the public. So long as no clue was obtained to the route pursued by the necessary vessels after leaving Beechey Island there was a necessity that every nook and corner of the Arctic Sea should be examined entailing what we know now to be much unnecessary hazard and fatigue. The case is now different we know the exact spot where to go to we know that the confines of the area have been reached we are aware that the travelling parties from the Enterprise could have traversed the very route pursued by the crews of the Erebus & Terror after they abandoned their vessels and we are aware that that ship returned in safety to England. Yet in the face of all this you call upon the British public to discountenance what you are pleased to term so outrageous a proceeding...', continuing that we owe it to the memory of these 135 Englishmen 'whose lives have failed a sacrifice to the accomplishment of a great geographical problem, to the satisfaction of their friends & relatives that the mystery should be cleared up. We owe it to our national honour that what we have begun should be accomplished and that we should not deprive our fellow countrymen who may hereafter be in difficulty of that firm trust in succour which has hitherto formed a bond on union in distress. Sir, I have been brought up in the persuasion that perseverance in a good and noble cause is one of the attributes of the Anglo-Saxon race. Let us not permit the slur of abandoning the fate of our missing countrymen to surmise to be handed down to posterity when we have it in our power without serious risk to place the matter beyond a doubt...', 2 pages with integral blank, some browning and mounting guard to inner margin, 4to This would appear to be a copy letter written by Collinson, the original dated at Boldon, Gateshead, 28 November 1856 was published in The Times on Monday 1 December 1856, page 5. 'In 1849 Collinson was appointed to command an expedition for the relief of Sir John Franklin, by way of the Bering Strait; he himself had command of the Enterprise, and with him was Commander Robert Le Mesurier McClure in the Investigator. ... Of the many who had searched for Franklin, Collinson came closest to the place where the expedition had ended. Collinson's addition to geographical knowledge on this Arctic trip was very considerable, and would have been tantamount to the discovery of the North-West Passage, had this not been already actually achieved by the men of the Investigator' (ODNB Online). Autograph material by Collinson is rare. (1)
