L Acquired from the artist by James White (former director of the National Gallery of Ireland, 1964-1980);Thence by descent to the present owner `Exposition Europe 1925`, Musée de Strasbourg, 14 May - 15 September 1970, catalogue no. 78 as Death of Procris, 1929 (loaned by owner); Irish Art Exhibition, Brussels, May 1930 as Painting; `Mainie Jellett Retrospective Exhibition`, Hugh Lane Gallery Dublin, July - October 1962, catalogue no. 6; `Mainie Jellett`, IMMA, December 1991 to March 1992, catalogue no. 94 Arnold, Bruce, Mainie Jellett and the Modern Movement in Ireland, Yale University Press New Haven & London, 1991, p. 112 (illustrated) Mainie Jellett has been described as the cornerstone of twentieth century modern art in Ireland,1 and is a pioneer of abstract cubism. Her formal education as a painter, at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin where she was exposed to the influence, among others, of William Orpen, followed by the Westminster School of Art in London, then run by Walter Sickert, provided a grounding for her understanding of the representation of the body. However, it was her experience in Paris, working with advocates of Cubism, André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, that facilitated her development of an increasingly stylised representation of the human figure and to her tendency towards abstraction. In Paris, Jellett was familiarised with various forms of Cubist representation from the object-based, almost monochromatic analytical method as practised by Picasso and Bracque to Orphist experiments with abstraction and brilliant colour. However, it was the theories of rotation and translation advocated by Gleizes that provided the basis for Jellett`s first abstract works. Much of her output is distinguished by her characteristic use of colour, of the tonal variation which demonstrates the inventive and subtle chromatic range that is evident in Death of Procris. By the late 1920s, when this painting was carried out, Jellett had developed a distinctive and identifiable method of representation and this painting is one of the finest examples of her work of this period. While the distillation of form shows her abstract tendencies, in many of her paintings she retains elements of figuration. In this work, the two protagonists in the story, while refined to their essentials of line and plane, can nonetheless be clearly discerned. Stylistically, the repeated curved lines and the geometry of the flat planes demonstrate her awareness of Art Deco. Jellett wrote extensively about art, and as early as the 1920s was emphasising the role of flatness in modern painting. She was also familiar with the history of art, and her knowledge of earlier periods including the artists of the Renaissance and its legacy, is evident in her essays. 2 Death of Procris is distinctive in representing a theme from classical mythology - a rare departure in Jellett`s work. The composition suggests familiarity with the painting in the National Gallery in London, by Piero di Cosimo, then known by the title Death of Procris.3 In common with di Cosimo`s arrangement, Procris lies prostrate along the bottom of the canvas, with Cephalos kneeling to the left. However, Jellett has made changes to aspects of their relative poses with Cephalos apparently cradling the head of Procris who appears to lie on her back with one knee raised. The pale figure of Procris, and tanned one of her husband, conforms to older traditions in representation of the genders and serves to assist in their identification. As with the di Cosimo, the background reads as a broad landscape; in Jellett`s work, the forms of rocks, sea, distant land, and clouds are suggested rather than detailed. The theme story has a number of variations, the best known coming from Ovid`s Metamorphoses IV, and is essentially a story of unjustified jealousy and its tragic consequences. A large Collection of Engineer’s Notebooks, files and documents related to T S D Collins. Together with the Proceedings of the Institute of Naval Architects. Some fascinating and rare material from the collection of TSD Collins AMINA, AFRAeS. Collins was a Naval Architect and Engineer who became involved in the development of Airships during, or shortly after the First World War, leading him to being one of the rare individuals who was an Associate of both the Institute of Naval Architects, and the Royal Aeronautical Society. Collins became part of the design team of the Royal Airship Works at Cardington. Immediately the news of the crash of R101 became known, he was immediately dispatched from Cardington to France to help identify the bodies of the Crew of the R101, many of whom were close friends. The documents in this collection include some pages of a report detailing a visit to Friedrichshafen and discussions with the Zeppelin staff regarding co-operation in research (pages numbered in top right corner 1 to 4 and 8) Signed by Squadron Leader Booth. Plus mimeograph typewritten notes on (1) “Aerostatics. Airship Lift Calculations” (pages 1-16), (2) “Notes on the Aerodynamics of Airship Flight and Mooring” (6 double sided sheets of notes plus 14 single sided sheets of diagrams and charts). The charts contain data relating to or derived from experiments on R34, R38 and the North Sea Class Blimps. There is also a diagram of a “NS” class airship (52cm x 34cm). Included in the material is National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Report No 24 “Forces on Airships in Gusts “ by CP Burgess; The full text of a paper “The Strength of Rigid Airships” submitted to the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) by CP Burgess, JC Hunsaker and S Truscott, at the direction of Rear Admiral WA Moffett. The paper was written in the aftermath of the R38 disaster and details some of the additional theoretical and experimental work undertaken by the US Navy prior to the construction of further Rigid Airships; An Advanced Proof copy of a paper “Airship Fabrics” to be given at the Royal Society of Arts on March 3 1921; an Aeronautical Engineering paper AER-51-36 “The Metal clad Airship” by Carl B Fritsche, one of the innovators behind the US Navy Metal clad airship ZMC-2, detailing the business case and outlining construction techniques used in the construction of the ZMC-2. Also included are a couple of diaries, together with exercise notebooks and files of handwritten notes from his early training as an apprentice shipwright in Pembroke Dockyard to his continuing education and exams through to 1936. Most of the paperwork is aged and foxed, but the content of printed documents generally remains clearly readable. Note: TSD Collins was sufficiently well regarded to be given responsibility in the mid-1930s to carry out structural tests on the remaining ring girder of the R100, preserved at RAF Cardington, after the R100’s scrapping in late 1931. The report on the Tests were submitted to the Aeronautical Research Committee as Report No 1787 (Tests on a single section of R.100 at Cardington).

A rare 1971 limited issue Corgi Toys Commer ¾ Ton “Hammonds” delivery van (462). Only available through this retail outlet the van is in their own period livery of dark blue, white and green with red interior with cast wheels. GC-VGC minor chips. See Plate 4. An Interesting Note: H.W. Hammond established his first business in North Bridge Hull in 1831, which was then taken over by “James Powell & Sons” in 1889. They built new premises in Paragon Square Hull, opening to the public in 1916. These premises survived until the 7th of May 1941 when a German raid reduced the building and surrounding area to rubble. Due to the scale of destruction it took until 1952 for a new modern store to finally reopen. “Hammonds Department Stores of Hull” traded on as an independent for a further 20 years when they were acquired by The House of Frazer Group in 1972. Many independents were swallowed up by this giant who in their wisdom re-named “Hammonds” “Binns”. After a dramatic fall in sales the new owners had to concede that this had been a mistake and reinstated the “Hammonds” name in 1989 costing the company some £40,000 for new signage, cloathing, stationary and vehicle re-sprays. The store is still in Paragon Square but today carries the “House Of Frazer” name.
