A SET OF FOUR PAKTONG CANDLESTICKS, each with detachable sconces and decorative shaped stems and spreading six-lobed bases with stepped and anthemion decoration, c.1750, 9.75" high (4). See illustration Paktong, also known as Tutenag or Chinese white copper, is now rare. Once a regular import from China it copied the then fashionable silver shapes exactly. This set of sticks is almost identical to a pair of "Paktong Table Candlesticks" in an online exhibition "Base Metal Objects 1300-1900" held recently by The Antique Metalware Society.

Senato Veneziano - Medaglia di benemerenza da 40 Zecchini 1756 celebrativa della vittoria sul naviglio tripolino riportata dal Comandante Iseppo Ivanovich - Diritto: il leone di San Marco stante a sinistra, retrospiciente, sostiene con la zampa destra alzata lo stemma Loredan sormontato del corno dogale; sotto le zampe del leone, una conchiglia ornamentale; il tutto racchiuso entro una cornice circolare di fogliette - Rovescio: la scena dello scontro navale; in basso una conchiglia ornamentale come al diritto e intorno una cornice che riproduce con ogni probabilità la collana che corredava la medaglia - Diametro mm. 56 - gr. 139,71 - Di grande rarità – Praticamente stato zecca, con fondi lucenti e dettagli perfettamente percepibili Nel sistema costituzionale della Repubblica di Venezia, il doge rappresentava lo Stato e quindi a lui spettava il diritto di mettere il proprio nome sulle emissioni monetarie della Repubblica. Invece la gestione dell’erario pubblico, entrate e spese dello Stato, era di competenza del Senato. Tra le spese dello Stato rientravano anche gli omaggi di riconoscimento a coloro che si erano distinti per servigi resi alla Repubblica o agli ambasciatori stranieri e alle delegazioni ufficiali ospiti di Venezia. Le Medaglie di Benemerenza fatte coniare dal Senato rispondevano all’esigenza sopraindicata in quanto abbinavano al significato simbolico un valore “venale” cospicuo, erano cioè in pratica dei lingotti in forma di medaglia. Esse sono estremamente rare sia perché la loro concessione non era frequente, sia perché proprio la loro natura di donativo “concreto” induceva i destinatari, o i loro eredi, a farle fondere per trasformarle in moneta corrente. € 50000
