A French wool and silk pastoral tapestry, 'la Danse', second half 18th century, to designs by Jacques-Nicolas Julliard (1715-1790) or Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811), possibly Aubusson, woven in polychrome threads, depicting a fete champêtre outside a tavern, with musicians and dancing couples before a wooded background, within a simulated picture frame border, linen backed, circa 210cm high, 448cm wide Provenance: Property from a Private Collection The designs for this animated pastoral feast are usually attributed to French painters Jean-Baptiste Huet and Jacques-Nicolas Julliard, who was a pupil of François Boucher and later appointed lead designer at the Aubusson and Felletin tapestry workshops in 1755. The subject of a village dance shows the influence of Netherlandish scenes on French tapestry manufacture, particularly the oeuvre of Teniers.Though parts of this design have appeared on the market, it is rare for all figural segments to survive in one tapestry. The flexible use of the cartoons designed by Julliard and others at Aubusson is well known, and Pascal-François Bertrand describes how different models were combined to form new suites and scenes. Note for example a tapestry combining the inn and dancing as in the present lot in the collection of the Musee du Louvre, and another example showing both segments with an archery scene to the right, which is in the town hall at Charlieu, France. These examples are illustrated in Pascal-François Bertrand, Aubusson, Tapisseries des Lumières, 2013, pp. 172 and 187 respectively. An Aubusson tapestry containing the left hand section of the same scene was sold at Christie's New York, 17 October 2002, lot 43, and another example later at Christie's London, 31 October 2012, lot 168; a tapestry depicting the central section with the seated and dancing couples later appeared at Drouot, Paris, lot 189. The flute player and hound are an adaptation of the popular 'chien savant' motif by Julliard's mentor François Boucher.

The battle took place at Solway Moss on the Anglo-Scottish border on 24th November 1542. When King Henry VIII of England broke away from the Roman Catholic Church, he asked King James V of Scotland, his nephew, to do the same. James rejected his uncle's request and further insulted him by refusing to meet at York. As a result, King Henry VIII displayed his anger by sending troops against Scotland. In retaliation for the massive English raid into Scotland King James responded by assigning Robert, Lord Maxwell, with the task of raising an army and on 24th November 1542 an army of 15,000 - 18,000 Scots advanced into England and were met near Solway Moss by Thomas Wharton and his 3000 men. The ensuing battle was uncoordinated and has been described as a rout. Alessandro Farnese (1520-1589), Italian Cardinal and Diplomat. Letters signed by Cardinal Beaton are extremely rare. The son of famous Spanish court painter Antonio Cortès, he trained in his father's studio from the age of thirteen. Although his hometown was sparsely populated, its proximity to Paris attracted many Parisian artists associated with the Barbizon school, who came to paint its adjoining forests. It also enabled the Cortès family to travel to the capital and keep up with the latest artistic trends.By 1900 Cortès had executed his first series of Paris street scenes, all marked by a dark, dramatic lighting. At the time, Paris was the center of the art world, a bustling international city that attracted artists, dealers, and collectors from around the globe. City scenes were particularly in demand, and Cortès, alongside painters like Jean Béraud and Eugène Galien-Laloue, wisely decided to make this genre his niche. Through his bold brushstrokes and colorful palette, Cortès was able to render the City of Lights with an Impressionistic delicacy, at the same time respecting the fundamental rules of perspective and composition he had learned from his father. He became the most famous poetic recorder of the city's ever-changing beauty, and in a career spanning more than sixty years captured its fashionable inhabitants, busy market stalls, and iconic monuments. Biographer David Klein writes: "Paris changed during the years that Cortès painted it; and the changes appear in his paintings. Horses and carriages disappear in favor of cars and trams; women's hourglass silhouettes and picture hats give way to boyish figures in short skirts and little furs, gas streetlights turn into neon signs and glaring headlights. But despite two world wars and the introduction of the machine age, the Paris of Cortès remains primarily the city of the Belle Époque. His paintings are often filled with nostalgia for the period." (David Klein, Édouard Cortès: Le Poète Parisien de la Peinture, Detroit, 1999 quoted in Mary Manion, "Esteem is Rising for Édouard Léon Cortès" in Antique Trader, September 14, 2018).After a lifelong dedication to capturing the magic of Paris during its transition from the Belle Époque to the modern era, Cortès ultimately retired to his hometown, where he continued to paint more picturesque scenes until his death in 1969.Since the Moulin Rouge opened its doors to the public in 1889, the famous cabaret in Montmartre has drawn large crowds of fashionable Parisians in search of guilty pleasures nowhere else accessible. Of the many Parisian views that Édouard Cortès completed, often depicting Notre Dame, Opéra Garnier or Boulevard de la Madeleine, only a handful of paintings and studies feature the Moulin Rouge. This excitingly rare work is one of the finest and earliest examples of Cortès’ bold, painterly style. Executed some ten years before the artist’s death, the painting skillfully captures the glowing red exterior of the cabaret juxtaposed against a dark sky, offering a glimpse of the temptations to be found within. The windmill’s striking silhouette, surrounding street lamps, and nearby facades inundate the passersby in the foreground with a warm, golden light that compels them to enter the Moulin Rouge, perhaps also tempting the viewer to leap into the picture plane and join them.

During the 17th Century, the majority of enamellers who worked on watch cases resided in France or Switzerland. The demand for enamelled watches in Europe and particularly, the Netherlands, resulted in huge numbers of empty enamelled cases being imported and then fitted with locally made movements.Les Deux Frères Huaut, (also spelled 'Huaud' or 'Huault'), who worked on the present example, were some of the finest enamellers to come out of the Geneva School. Pierre Huaut (1612-1680) was a French enameller who settled in Geneva in c.1630 as master enameller and painter. Three of Pierre's eleven children would become celebrated enamellists and more than likely apprenticed under him; Pierre II (1647-1698), Jean-Pierre (1655-1723) and Ami (1657-1724). Pierre II set up on his own in around 1680 and then went into partnership with his brothers a couple of years later. Jean-Pierre and Ami moved to Berlin in 1686, where they were commissioned by Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg of the Prussian Court. With thanks to Oliver Cooke for access to the British Museum archive. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
