Boer War - Historic Newspapers: The Pretoria Friend a complete run of the 17 issues of this rare newspaper which ran from June 26th - July 14th 1900, each issue 4pp. Approx size 41x27cm, fine condition unbound. Together with a photo copy of the preliminary notice announcing the publication of the paper. One of the great rarities on newspaper collecting. The Pretoria Friend was issued soon after the occupation of the town by the British during the Second Boer War. It contained a mixture of general news, notices, proclamations and local advertising. It was established by Lord Stanley under the assumption that with the fall of Pretoria the war would soon be over. Lord Roberts miscalculated however, pressing on towards Johannesburg and left the city undefended. The Boers for their part were far from defeated and a new phase of guerrilla fighting began - hence the rather short run of this rare publication.

WINEHOUSE AMY: (1983-2011) English Singer & Songwriter. Emotional A.L.S., Amy (Civil) xx, four pages, small 8vo, n.p. [London], n.d. [February/March 2010], to Blake Fielder-Civil, on the printed stationery of The Langham. Winehouse, writing in a slightly erratic hand, states, in full, 'If I wrote to you in rhymes, like songs, then I'd have done ten albums already (THEN! PLEASE GOD; HOPEFULLY) I'd have your baby kicking to come out of me! Lucky. Blake do ya remember being at K[ey] WEST and saying/praying and looking forward to a future of fixing each other? It didn't seem then that the notion of picking each other up off the floor is co-dependant like you say we have a tendency to be. Blake - I know you know how much I LOVE you………but - (I really don't like saying "but" - ) Blakels we don't have to see co dependency as a bad thing. FIX ME! Let me fix you - (it scared me when you first said it) - truth is?? We've ALWAYS looked after each other: ALWAYS. You bring me up, you make me better AND when you do that, I naturally look after you in turn. What would I do without you? Really? Cos that's what I've been thinking over the last 2 days. I love, need, and survive off you; I love you. Your Gemmalicious McCivil. I belong to you.' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Winehouse. The letter is enhanced at various points by seven love hearts in the singer's hand. Rare. VG At the end of February and beginning of March 2010 Winehouse took up residency in London's Langham Hotel while she waited to complete the purchase of her home in Camden. The use of the name "Gemmalicious McCivil" in the letter is a twist on a nickname that Winehouse adopted, particularly at times when she wished to communicate anonymously with her husband through social media networks.
