ROYAL LOCHNAGAR 1974 30 YEAR OLD RARE MALTS HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1974Bottled: 04/2004Bottle Number: 090156.2% ABV / 70cl Royal Lochnagar Distillery sits at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains and is fed by the crystal clear water of the Scarnock springs. Originally called Lochnagar, it was renamed following the royal visit by Queen Victoria, who was quite a fan. The distillery reguarly resupplied the nearby Balmoral Castle which is situated just one mile away. Please see additional pictures
CLYNELISH 1983 23 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS LAING OLD & RARE HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1983Bottled: 20061 of 254 bottles55.3% ABV / 70cl Built in the late 1960s, as a replacement for the distillery we now refer to as Brora, Clynelish has produced whisky for the Johnnie Walker range of blends ever since. Capable of producing nearly 5 million litres of spirit annually, it is one of Scotland’s larger malt distilleries. But despite this, it isn’t exactly a household name, with a relatively small percentage of its output appearing in single malt form. Its core range begins and ends with a 14-Year-Old, occasionally supplemented with a few limited releases and a sporadically bottled double matured Distillers Edition. Thankfully, fans of the Highland distillery’s signature waxy style can experience a broader selection in the form of independent releases. Please see additional pictures
BEN NEVIS 1964 40 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS LAING OLD & RARE HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1964Bottled: 2005Matured in a sherry cask.1 of 295 bottles45.7% ABV / 70cl Ben Nevis distillery, located at the foot of the UK’s highest mountain of the same name, was responsible for producing one of the most successful blended whiskies of the late 19th Century. Named after “Long” John MacDonald, who was the first to acquire a licence for the distillery, the Long John brand was so popular that a second distillery was built next door just to keep up with demand (and, no… before you ask, we don’t know what Mr MacDonald’s “Long” moniker referred to, or if it was self-appointed). Sadly, these good fortunes didn’t continue, and by 1908 the second distillery ceased production, instead being utilised as a bonded warehouse. Today Ben Nevis is owned by Japanese whisky giants, Nikka, with some of its output being used in their blended “Japanese” whiskies. Its popularity as a single malt has also grown thanks to many favourable reviews. Please see additional pictures
TEANINICH 1972 23 YEAR OLD RARE MALTS 75CL HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1972Bottle Number: 097664.95% ABV / 75cl For a distillery capable of churning out over ten million litres of spirit in a single year, you might expect the highland distillery of Teaninich to be more of a household name than it actually is. The reason for its borderline anonymity is simply because most of the distillery’s output is earmarked for (parent company) Diageo’s various blends. Official single malt releases are limited to a 12 Year Old that forms part of the Flora & Fauna range, and the occasional limited edition. Even independent bottlings are thin on the ground, so they’re worth snapping up wherever you find them.
GLEN KEITH 1971 35 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS LAING OLD & RARE SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT Distilled: 12/1971Bottled: 05/2007Finished in a rum cask.1 of 182 bottles52.6% ABV / 70cl Built by Seagram in the late 1950s, Glen Keith provided malt whisky for the Chivas, Passport and 100 Pipers blends until it was eventually mothballed in 1999. By 2001, the company was acquired by French conglomerate Pernod-Ricard, who refurbished the distillery and pressed it back into service in 2013. In addition to providing blending stock, the distillery is home to the Chivas Brothers lab, who’s experiments have included the production of a heavily peated spirit known as Glenisla. Official releases from Glen Keith are extremely thin on the ground, so the best plan for those keen to sample the seldom seen single malt is to hunt down some of the excellent indie releases.
MACALLAN 1978 28 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS LAING OLD & RARE SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT Distilled: 10/1978Bottled: 09/2007Finished in a Bourbon Barrel1 of 219 bottles52% ABV / 70cl There are few distilleries in the world quite so revered as Macallan. Nestled in the heart of the Speyside region, the rich spirit that runs from their “curiously small stills”, and their penchant for Spanish Sherry casks have proven to be a match made in Heaven, delighting the tastebuds of whisky connoisseurs around the globe. With demand far outstripping supply, they embarked upon one of the most ambitious distillery upgrades of all time, investing £140 million in an ultra-modern still house and visitor centre that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape, and is home to a whopping 36 stills capable of churning out around 15 million litres of spirit every year. Even so, getting your hands on a bottle can still be tricky, with new releases selling out as soon as they hit the shelves, and older examples regularly setting records at auction.
PORT ELLEN 1979 28 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS LAING OLD & RARE ISLAY SINGLE MALT Distilled: 12/1979Bottled: 08/20081 of 266 bottles53.9% ABV / 70cl Despite having closed in 1983, Port Ellen is still one of Islay’s best-known distilleries. Relatively unknown while in operation, its reputation since closing has blossomed, with expressions commanding hefty hammer prices at auction. In 2017 owner Diageo announced plans to revive the distillery, undertaking painstaking work to recreate the distillery as accurately as possible, even employing former Port Ellen employees to assist in the project.
MACALLAN 1989 21 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS LAING OLD & RARE SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT Distilled: 03/1989Bottled: 09/20101 of 245 bottles52% ABV / 70cl There are few distilleries in the world quite so revered as Macallan. CAOL ILA 1975 20 YEAR OLD RARE MALTS 75CL ISLAY SINGLE MALT Bottle Number: 106961.12% ABV / 75cl Caol Ila might not be the prettiest distillery on Islay, but the spectacular view it enjoys, across the water to the neighbouring island of Jura, more than makes up for it. The distillery itself is an absolute monster, producing more litres of spirit per year than Lagavulin, Ardbeg, and Laphroaig combined! A good chunk of its staggering output winds up in Johnnie Walker, but there’s still plenty left to be bottled as single malt, in both peated and un-peated guises.
GLENLIVET RARE CASK SMALL BATCH 1L SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT Batch #9378/01240% ABV / 1L One of the very first distilleries in Scotland to be granted an official licence, after the passing of the licencing act in 1823, Glenlivet distillery has become synonymous with Speyside whisky. So much so, that at one point 28 other distilleries in the area adopted “Glenlivet” as a suffix to their own brand in order to piggyback on the reputation Glenlivet had built for itself. Although that practise has fallen by the wayside in recent years some independent bottlers still use it.The Glenlivet brand is now one of the most recognisable in the world, and despite the distillery undergoing an expansion and upgrade (beginning) in 2010, their iconic 12-Year-Old expression still had to be discontinued for a few years before production was able to catch up with demand.

A good chunk of its staggering output winds up in Johnnie Walker, but there’s still plenty left to be bottled as single malt, in both peated and un-peated guises. There is some damage to the capsule, however, it remains partially intact and the stopper could not be removed without causing further damage. Please see additional photograph.

William Hart was a Christchurch taxidermist who became interested in natural history as a boy and passed on his skills, and later his business 'William Hart & Son, Preservers of Birds and Beasts', to his son, Edward. Edward Hart built a large collection of mounted birds, which he initially exhibited in his own small museum. Hart's Museum received many visitors, including Sir Robert and Lady Baden-Powell in March 1914. The building was described as 'warm, well-lit and very clean, the ideal of a private museum, every part of which is crowded with rare and beautiful birds.' A chart drawn up by Edward Hart for Bournemouth Corporation gave some indication of the space taken up by the cases. The total length of the bird cases was 270 feet (82 metres) with a height of 10 feet (3 metres). In addition the mammal cases extended another 30 feet (9 metres). By 1903, Hart sought an established museum to purchase the collection in order to maintain and exhibit it in perpetuity; however, no buyers came forward. In 1924, the collection was sold to John Hall, an industrialist and keen ornithologist who displayed it in a purpose built gallery in his home, Broughton Hall in Staffordshire.
