DORLEAC FRANÇOISE: (1942-1967) French Actress, sister of Catherine Deneuve. Her few films included Truffaut´s La Peau Douce (1964) and Polanski´s Cul-de-sac (1966). A very rare signed 8vo page `Françoise Dorleac´, removed from an autograph album. Signed in bold black ink across the page. Autographs in any form of Dorleac are extremely rare following her tragically early death at the age of 25 in a car accident. Very light uneven left edge as a result of the removal of the page from the notebook. VG

NANSEN FRIDTJOF: (1861-1930) Norwegian Explorer and Scientist. Nobel Peace Prize in 1922. Former champion Skier, he led the team that made the first skiing crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, and won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude during his North Pole expedition. His techniques of polar travel and his innovations influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. A fine and rare signed cabinet photograph by Nansen, 5 x 7.5, the attractive image depicting the humanitarian explorer, a youthful looking Nansen, standing outdoors, alongside another gentleman, standing on the steps of a railroad car. Signed in bold black ink `Fridtjof Nansen´, to the lower light grey stiff sheet mount. VG

MCLAREN BRUCE: (1937-1970) New Zealand Motor Racing Driver, founder of the McLaren Racing Team, one of the most successful in Formula One Championship history. A rare vintage signed colour 10 x 8 double-page image, evidently removed from a souvenir programme, the image depicting McLaren seated in a racing car with several other men at one side inspecting the car. Signed by McLaren with his name alone to the image, largely across a darker area. Matted in off-white and framed and glazed in a plain black modern frame to an overall size of 14.5 x 12.5. The image was taken at Goodwood Motor Circuit where some years later McLaren would lose his life in a crash. HAWTHORN MIKE: (1929-1959) British Racing Driver. First British Formula One World Champion in 1958. Hawthorn also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955. Rare signed 5.5 x 3.5 photograph by Hawthorn, the image showing the British pilot driving his racing car. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image. Autographs of Hawthorn are rare and desirable in any form after his tragic death at the early age of 29 in a road accident. Very small traces of former affixing to the edges. G Hawthorn announced his retirement shortly after winning the Formula One World Championship, having been profoundly affected by the death at the very early age of 26 of his teammate and friend Peter Collins (1931-1958), two months earlier in the 1958 German Grand Prix. Only three months later Hawthorn died in a road accident.

GRETCHANINOV ALEXANDER: (1864-1956) Russian Composer. An unusual signed and corrected proof copy of the sheet music for Gretchaninov's composition Herbst (Op.11), twenty-six pages, folio, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, 30th August 1929. The sheet music, printed in green and white and on unbound pages, with words in German and Cyrillic, feature over fifty holograph corrections by the composer, many to the white borders. Signed by Gretchaninov to the head of the first page at the conclusion of a note, in French, advising of his address in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and, after the 12th September, in Paris. Also with the oval rubber stamp of the publisher to the head of the first page. Rare in this form. Together with a manuscript copy (unsigned and in an unidentified hand) of Gretchaninov's String Quartet No. 4 in F major (Op.124), seventy-four pages, folio, boldly penned in fountain pen ink on printed manuscript paper (unbound). STEINER RUDOLF: (1861-1925) Austrian Philosopher, Founder of Antroposophy. Steiner was also a literary Critic, Architect, and a claimed Clairvoyant. Rare A.L.S., `Steiner´, one page, to a German postcard, Berlin, to Paul Quensel, in German. Steiner congratulates his correspondent on the success of his drama "Um die Scholle", stating `So "Auf der Scholle!" has premiered. We rejoice at your success. Please send our best wishes to all the group." The card bears two additional autograph messages by Otto Hartleben beneath Steiner´s one, the first signed more familiarly `Otto Erich´, and the second as `Otto Hartleben´ impersonating in jest a more formal personality. All three being humorous messages with a wordplay on the name of Quesnel´s drama, calling it "Auf der Scholle". ARMSTRONG NEIL: (1930-2012) American Astronaut, Commander of Apollo XI (1969). The first man to walk on the moon. A rare, early A.L.S., Neil, two pages, slim 4to, n.p. (Cleveland, Ohio), n.d. ('Monday'; 7th March 1955), to Carl Bleschmidt. Armstrong enquires as to how his friend is in the Far East, asking 'Have you managed to completely de-structure the structures lab as yet', and continues to send news of his own activities, 'My time is split between flying and general rocket engineer. The flying is fine - we have an F8H, F2H, F82E, F82B, R4D, C47 & C82 with possibilities of a few other planes coming. In my first week I've made trips to Wash. D.C., Norfolk, VA, Chincoteague & Detroit, Mich. The missile work is both Aerodynamic & Structural or multi-stage test missiles. We fly them out over the Atlantic & launch them from the F82B & F2H.' Armstrong concludes by referring to his correspondent's wedding photographs and explains that he will be happy to forward them once he has confirmation of the correct address. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Armstrong to Bleschmidt at the Structural Test Laboratory of the Martin Aircraft Co. in Baltimore and also signed ('N. A. Armstrong') by Armstrong in the return address to the upper left corner. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a few creases, otherwise VGAt the time of the present letter Armstrong was working as a research test pilot with the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in Cleveland from where he made his first test flight on 1st March 1955, just a week before writing to his friend. Armstrong's spell at Cleveland only lasted a couple of months before he was able to secure a position at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) High-Speed Flight Station at Edwards Air Force Base, beginning on 11th July 1955.

MADAME ROLAND: (1754-1793) Born Marie-Jeanne Phlipon, also known as Manon Roland de la Platiere. French Revolutionary salonniere and Writer. Guillotined. Very rare and one of the last letters written by Manon before being executed, A.L.S., with paraph, four pages, 8vo, from the prison of Sainte-Pélagie, [mid-October 1793], to Jany, in French. A letter of very interesting content where Madame Roland confides her notebooks of memories and her secret love for Buzot. Madame Roland states `Your sweet letter, dear Jany, has done to me as much good as your kind conversation. Tender pity is the real balm of a sick heart. I can feel the delicacy that makes you loath to ever publish my secret.. Personally, I hold absolutely and only to the truth. I have never had the slightest temptation to be esteemed more than I am worth. I want that people know me as I am.´ further referring to Jean Jacques Rousseau, saying "J.J. never seemed to be guilty of his confession." Madame Roland further explains to her correspondent her situation with her jealous husband, and refers to her lover Buzot stating in p art `I am not intending to apologize, but I am convinced that the jealousy of the unfortunate R. alone, (referring to Roland, her husband) made my secret pierced by confidences… Do you believe that he had written about it, with all the outburst and falsehood of an irritated mind that hates his rival and wants to deliver him to public loathing? Can you imagine how much these writings inflamed my indignation and the feeling for how much he is unfairly mistreated? Yes, you saw him, and you portrayed him well. You will find his painting portrait and also his writings in a box that you will be given. It is my dearest belonging… Keep them safe in order to pass them on one day..´ Further again, Madame Roland refers to her fate saying `As far as I´m concerned, it´s all over. Do you know the disease that the English call heart-breaken?(sic) I have it, without cure, and I do not want to delay the effects, fever is growing, I hope it won´t be long. My freedom will never be restored to me.´ Before concluding, Manon expresses her concerns for Buzot´s fate and expects he will be able to reach America, and says goodbye to `Jany, my only friend who brings me comfort, goodbye!´ A historical letter of very interesting content. In very fine condition. VG Madame Roland´s correspondent, Jany, was the surname of French Geographer Edme Mentelle (1730-1816) a supporter of the French revolution.Letter provenance from former collection of the Marquis de l´Aigle.Madame Roland was known for her intelligence and political analyses. A good lobbyist and negotiator. Her salon was one of the most important meeting places for politicians. When her husband Jean-Marie Roland de la Platiere (1734-1793) unexpectedly became Minister of the Interior in 1792 under King Louis XVI, her political influence grew. She was involved in decisions about political appointments, and was in charge of a bureau set up to influence public opinion in France. Admired by Girondins and moderates but reviled by the Jacobins and hated by the sans-culottes of Paris. In June 1793, she was the first Girondin to be arrested during the Reign of Terror and was guillotined a few months later. Madame Roland wrote her memoirs while she was imprisoned in the months before her execution.

BECQUEREL ANTOINE HENRI: (1852-1908) French Physicist. Becquerel is credited as the first person to discover evidence of radioactivity. Awarded for his works in this field with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903, together with Marie and Pierre Curie. An extremely rare manuscript document by Becquerel, being scientific notes, including formulas and calculations, one page, oblong 4to, ruled paper, n.p., n.d., in French. The manuscript includes Becquerel´s notes concerning X-rays, electrolysis, atoms and electrons, with formulas and equations. A document of very rare and interesting scientific content. [WONGSA DHIRAJ SNID]: (1808-1871) Prince of Siam, a physician and diplomat known as the Doctor Prince. Wongsa Dhiraj Snid was an early adopter of Western-style medicine who served as royal physician during the reigns of his half-brothers King Rama III and King Rama IV. Autograph Letter, unsigned, in the third person (in the hand of a clerk), two pages, folio, Palace of the Former Kings, 1st November 1856, to Captain Drought of the Honourable East India Company's steamer Auckland. The Prince presents his compliments to Drought and informs him 'that in accordance with his request H.R.H. has ordered the Siamese steamer to be in readiness at the British Consulate tomorrow night', further adding 'The Siamese Government have given orders to have the officers of the H.C. Steamer Auckland supplied with fruit - in addition to which H.R.H. Prince Kromma Luang Wongsa begs Capt. Drought to accept for himself from His Highness a trifling token of his friendship, a present of fifty pomelows & two hundred sweet oranges'. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by a rare example of the original red silk purse (which served as an envelope), with just a few small minor remnants of the original address label, bearing a few ink letters, and with the original silk drawstring to which small parts of the seal are still affixed. Assassinated; Grand Duke Michael (1878-1918) Heir presumptive 1894-1904. He deferred acceptance of the throne when Nicholas abdicated in 1917; Grand Duchess Xenia (1875-1960) and Grand Duchess Olga (1882-1960); also including Olga Constantinovna (1851-1926) Queen Consort of Greece 1867-1913. Regent of Greece in 1920. Grand Duchess of Russia; Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich (1847-1909) son of Emperor Alexander II and brother of Emperor Alexander III. He was the senior Grand Duke of the House of Romanov during the reign of his nephew Nicholas II; Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich (1860-1919) youngest child of Tsar Alexander II and brother of Alexander III; Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich (1891-1942) son of the last. Through his friendship with Yusupov, he took part in the assassination of Rasputin. He lived in Paris where he lived during the 1920s a notorious affair with the famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel; Grand Duchess Alexandra Iosifovna (1830-1911) wife of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich; Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich (1869-1918), etc… Matted in grey, glazed and framed in wood, to an overall size of 17 x 13. BOLO PASHA: (1867-1918) French Financier and Adventurer. Paul Bolo was a German agent and a traitor who participated in many shady schemes. The French secret police and Scotland Yard failed to convict him of treason, but was finally convicted by the New York Attorney General. He was condemned and executed by firing squad. Rare A.L.S., `Bolo´, two pages, 8vo, written to the first and fourth page, 7th July 1909, on the printed stationery of the Splendid & Nouvel Hotel at Chatel-Guyon, to Henry Lapauze, in French. Bolo regrets that he couldn´t find time to meet his correspondent and wife, and sends his best regards, and on a postscriptum asks `Is it true that you are negotiating for a Lépine, rue de la Seine? CYCLISTS: An excellent selection of scarce signed photographs and postcards, most colour, various sizes, mostly 4 x 6, two slightly larger and three smaller, by international cyclists, ten of them being Tour de France winners, comprising rare Tom Simpson (1937-1967) One of the best British professional cyclists. First British to ever wear the Tour de France yellow jersey and first to win the World road race championship. Simpson died at the early age of 29 during the 1967 Tour de France, when he collapsed during the ascent of Mont Ventoux; TEN Tour de France winners comprising André Leducq (1930,1932), Antonin Magne (1931, 1934), Gino Bartali (1938,1948), Federico Bahamontes (1959), Roger Pingeon (1967), Eddy Merckx (1969-72, 1974), Bernard Hinault (1978-79, 1981-82, 1985), Greg Lemond (1986, 1989-90), Stephen Roche (1987) and Andy Schleck (2010). Also comprising Charles Pélissier, Levi Leipheimer, Herman Van Springel, Ferdinand Bracke, Rick Van Looy, Rudi Altig, Riccardo Ricco, Gilberto Simoni, Tom Leezer, Bauke Mollema and Piotr Ugrumov. All are boldly signed, most to clear areas of the images, some are inscribed. G, 22

NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. Rare L.S., `Buonaparte´, a bold good example signature, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d., in French. Napoleon Bonaparte acknowledges receipt of a letter which is addressed to him in his capacity as General of Artillery, referring to Citizen Perrier, Captain of a Horse Artillery Regiment who paid an amount of six hundred pounds to be able to get the command of a “Cannoniers troop”, but who apparently `..he no doubt ignored that he had been promoted to Chief of Brigade of a Horse Artillery regiment of recent creation, he was informed with a letter addressed to him on 23rd Germinal to Valence, but which never reached him…´ Signed at the base by Napoleon Bonaparte. The letter has been professionally and lightly affixed to a larger card, allowing the view of the blank verso. Very small hole to the centre, professionally repaired. G to VG

BERNADOTTE JEAN BAPTISTE: (1763-1844) Marshal of France, Prince de Pontecorvo and King Charles XIV John of Sweden and Norway 1818-44. Rare manuscript statement, one page, oblong 4to, n.p., n.d., in French. Bernadotte, as King Charles XIV of Sweden, states `Ne portons plus Notre pensée vers les epoques qui ont failli perdre la Suede. Jouissons de la tranquilité présente et prions Dieu d´inspirer a chacun assez de vertu et de courage pour bien servir son roi et sa patrie.´ A patriotic statement in the King´s hand, with few words crossed, although still legible. The manuscript is most probably a draft for a speech that Bernadotte was working on. With paraph at the base, same as the one he usually added beneath his signature. A bold dark ink attractive manuscript document. G to VG

VOLTAIRE: (1694-1778) French Enlightenment Writer and Philosopher. Voltaire is a pseudonym, his name being François-Marie Arouet. Voltaire is known for his attacks on Catholic Church, and his advocacy of freedom of religion and expression, and separation of church and state. Rare A.L.S., `V´, one page, 4to, n.p. [Colmar], 10th November, n.y. [1754], to Monsieur Dufrenay, in French. After escaping from Prussia in 1753, putting an end to his serving relationship with Frederick the Great, Voltaire returns to France. He considers living in Alsace and moves to Strasbourg and to Colmar after having been banned from Paris by King Louis XV. Voltaire lived in Colmar for a full year before moving to Geneva and buying the estate Les Delices. The present letter is written by Voltaire when he is about to leave Colmar and France and move definitively to Switzerland. Voltaire states `I only have the time to send you the testimony of my regrets, and to tell the kind father of Nicette that I have to depart with the sorrow of not having been with him enough, and not having met his daughter. I am even more distressed because I could not say goodbye to Madame du Frenai. Adieu, I leave with the hope of still telling you in Strasbourg how much I am devoted to you.´ With address leaf in Voltaire´s hand, bearing a red wax seal in two parts and good condition. Defresney helped Voltaire with his correspondence over those years in Strasbourg and Alsace.

[GONE WITH THE WIND]: HOWARD SIDNEY (1891-1939) American Playwright, Dramatist & Screenwriter, posthumously received the 1940 Academy Award for Best Adaptation for his screenplay of Gone With The Wind (1939). Rare T.L.S., Sidney Howard, one page, 8vo, New York, 18th May 1933, to Lester Roberts. Howard thanks his correspondent for their letter and regrets that he does not have a photograph, remarking 'I cannot remember when I last had one taken'. SIGISMOND PRINCE OF TRANSYLVANIA: (1573-1613) Also known as Sigismund Bathory. As a child he succeeded his father as Voivode or ruler of Transylvania. Sigismond abdicated in favour of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, and although he returned to his pillaged territories in 1601 with a Polish army, he could not strengthen his position and settled in Poland. In 1605, Holy Roman Emperor and Spanish King Philip III tried to persuade him to return and claim Transylvania, but he refused. He would later be accused of conspiracy and imprisoned by Rudolf II. Rare L.S., `Sigismond Principe´, a bold large and attractive signature with large flourish beneath, one page, folio, n.p, n.d., [1595], in Italian. The letter is addressed to Cardinal Alphonso Vicecometi, and states in part `I send my infinite gratitude to Y.S.S.R for the concession granted to me and which I esteem so much… I have no doubt about your affection towards myself and all matters related to me, and I will not miss the opportunity to prove my affection.. VERDI GIUSEPPE: (1813-1901) Italian Composer. A rare and excellent A.M.Q.S.,`G. Verdi´, one page, oblong 8vo, May 1894, in Italian. Verdi has penned a four bars quote of music which he identifies from his opera Falstaff (1893) to the upper left corner. Verdi also adds beneath the musical quote the words, `Tutto nel mondo e burla. L´uom e nato burlone´ (“Everything in the world is a jest. Man is born a joker”), in his hand, from the opera Falstaff, a well-known aria of the third act, being the opera finale. A very desirable signed quotation only few months after its premiere in Milan. Falstaff is a comic opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The libretto was adapted by Arrigo Boito from Shakespeare´s The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV. Premiered in February 1893 at La Scala of Milan. Falstaff was Verdi´s last opera.

Rare book signed, a hardback edition of Mr. Hoyle's Games of Whist, Quadrille, Piquet, Chess and Back-Gammon, Complete Fourteenth Edition, including the laws of the several games and 'To which is now first added, Two new Cases at Whist, never before printed; also The New Laws of the Game at Whist, As played at White's and Saunders's Chocolate-Houses', printed for Thomas Osborne in Gray's Inn and Henry Woodfall and Richard Baldwin of Pater-noster-Row, London (1765). Signed ('Edmond Hoyle') in bold ink with his name alone to the lower margin beneath an advertisement declaring, in part, 'No Copies of this Book are genuine, but what are signed by the Author'. The small 8vo edition has the original tan calf boards and spine (a little distressed and worn) with raised bands and gilt lettering ('Hoyle's Games'). FRANÇOIS I: (1494-1547) King of France 1515-1547. First King of France from the Angouleme branch. He succeeded his cousin and father-in-law Louis XII. A Patron of the arts who initiated the French Renaissance and attracted Italian artists to France, including Leonardo da Vinci, whose Mona Lisa was bought by King Francis. A rare L.S. 'Francoys', one page, 4to, St-Germain-en-Laye, 17th May [1528], to the President of the Parisian Parliament Jean de Selve, in French. The King requests the expeditious dispatch of the trial of Sieur d'Angerville, Captain of ordinance military regiment, serving him as `..Capitaine de cinquante lances de mes ordonnances´, in order to send him and his regiment promptly to the Kingdom locations where he has ordered to reinstate order and defend. Countersigned by the King's counselor François Robertet de Brou. Addressed to the verso, also bearing a registry annotation. Extremely small filing pinholes to the left border, and small age wear, otherwise VG Jean de Selve (1475-1529) French Diplomat and Magistrate. Appointed in 1520 First President of the Parliament of Paris. De Selve was in charge of important diplomatic missions in England for the negotiation of peace and in Spain for the liberation of King François I. François Robertet de Brou, son of Florimond I de Robertet d'Alluye and godson of François I. He succeeded his father as secretary to the king and bailiff of the palace from 1527. The ordinance companies are the first permanent and professional military units at the disposal of the King. They were created by the ordinance of 26th May 1445 under Charles VII. Essentially composed of cavalry, the basic unit was the "Lance".

POPE ALEXANDER: (1688-1744) English Poet, known for his satirical verse and use of the heroic couplet. Pope is the second most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations after William Shakespeare. Fine, dark ink signature ('A. Pope') to the verso of a manuscript document signed ('J: Caryll') by John Caryll, one page, slim oblong 12mo, n.p., 2nd September 1717. Caryll's document is addressed to the goldsmith [Richard] Wright of Convent Garden and states, in full, 'Pray pay unto Mr. Alexander Pope or order the sum of thirty three shilings on acct of yr friend'. Signed by Pope to the verso as an acknowledgement of having received the funds. With a partial integral address leaf. Rare. Some light overall age toning and wear, otherwise VG John Caryll (1667-1736) The Younger. Second Jacobite Baron Caryll of Durford and friend of Alexander Pope. Richard Wright conducted the business of Wrights & Co. between 1708-29, the private bank having been established as the goldsmithing business of William Wright in 1699, based in Covent Garden, London. Pope published several works in the same year as signing the present document, including Eloisa to Abelard, Three Hours After Marriage and Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady. It was also the year in which his father, a linen merchant in London, died.

ZAMBECCARI FRANCESCO: (1752-1812) Italian Aviation Pioneer and Balloonist, the first to conceive the idea of controlling the course of a balloon. A.L.S., Francesco, two pages, 4to, London, 20th August 1783, to his father ('My dearest and beloved father'), in Italian. Written in his typically neat and attractive hand, Zambeccari states that he is sending his letter with the Prince of Caramanico who is travelling to Naples and also sends news of his recent activities and his desire to find a post with the East India Company with the assistance of Lord North, although if this is not possible he will go to Venice, where he will be closer to his father. Zambeccari also refers to a war with the Ottoman troops which may give him the opportunity of a post with the navy or engineers, as he has previous experience, and further writes of the generosity he has received from the Prince, but does not dare ask for any more and must face new situations now. HAILE SELASSIE I: (1892-1975) Ethiopian Regent 1916-30 and Emperor 1930-74. A bold fountain pen ink signature, as Emperor, on an unusual 4to page removed from an album, n.p. (London), 1936. Haile Selassie’s signature appears in the upper left corner of the page alongside a blind embossed circular seal featuring an image of the Lion of Judah at the centre, and a further annotation, in Tigrinya, in the Emperor’s hand. Lightly affixed to the page is a 5 x 7 photograph of Haile Selassie standing in a full length pose and alongside this a piece of partially folded ribbon (7” in length as it appears on the page) in Ethiopian colours has been neatly laid down. With an interesting ink annotation (of which, curiously, some words have been neatly erased in order to hide the identity of an individual or individuals) to the verso in an unidentified hand, stating, in full, ‘…..obtained this signature at the Abyssinian Embassy in London in 1936 when the Emperor was in exile during the war with Italy. Sir Oliver Lodge the philosopher was supposed to interview the Emperor after…….but apparently did not feel well & asked……..if he could go before……This suited……because he could then be less hurried. The Emperor insisted on embossing the seal himself (a task…….preferred to do, to ensure a good striking). He showed particular interest in the signiture (sic) of President [Franklin D.] Roosevelt & said he had great admiration for him’. A rare and attractive presentation. VG

DANTON GEORGES: (1759-1794) Leading figure of the French Revolution and first President of the Committee of Public Safety. Danton voted for the death of Louis XVI in 1793. Guillotined by the advocates of revolutionary terror. An exceptional and rare multiple D.S., Danton, three pages, large folio, Paris, 15th September 1792, in French. The hand written decree states to the heading "Au Nom de la Nation - Le Comité Exécutif Provisoire" ("In the name of the Nation - the Provisional Executive Committee") and is signed by Danton in his capacity as President of the recently created committee, stating in part `Considering that some locations have been given after treason to the enemies of the homeland, who distress and devastate our boundary and with numerous armies threaten the inside of the Kingdom. Considering that in a time when the danger to our Homeland is imminent, no extraordinary decision has to be avoided..´ Danton further appoints citizen François Joseph Westermann as commissar and assistant to the head-quarters of the Ardennes army under Commandant Dumouriez, expecting a daily report and the execution of the decrees issued by the Executive Committee. Also signed by several members of the Provisional Executive Committee, including GASPARD MONGE (1746-1818) Count de Péluse. French Mathematician, credited as the inventor of the descriptive geometry. Monge served as Minister of the Marine from August 1792 to April 1793. The present letter is signed during this short period of eight months; ETIENNE CLAVIERE (1735-1793) Genevan-French Financier and Politician. Minister of Finance in 1792. In August 1792 he was given charge of the finances in the provisional Executive Committee. Arrested in June 1793 for unknown reasons, he remained in Prison until December, when he committed suicide the day before appearing before the Revolutionary Tribunal; PIERRE-HENRI LEBRUN-TONDU (1754-1793) French Foreign Minister in 1792, and same year and temporarily of the Minister of war. A strong advocate of the immediate peace with Prussia and of the annexation of Belgium and the Netherlands. Lebrun-Tondu signed the execution of King Louis XVI. Arrested and executed in 1793; JOSEPH MARIE SERVAN DE GERBEY (1741-1808) French General. He served twice as Minister of War. The letter bears an attractive Pro Patria watermark. Folded. Small repair to the verso to the union of the two pages, otherwise GOn 10th August 1792, only a month before the present letter was signed, the popular forces marched on the Tuileries ending with the French monarchy the day after. With the fall of the King, the six existing ministers created the 12th August 1792 the Provisional Executive Committee in charge of converting into law the decrees approved by the citizens representatives.Danton was also appointed Minister of Justice on 10th August 1792, holding the post only until 9th October same year. The present document was signed by Danton during that very short period of two months.

BAO DAI: (1913-1997) His name being Nguyen Phuc Vinh Thuy. Last Emperor of Vietnam, of the Nguyen dinasty dynasty. Emperor of Annam 1926-45, under French Indochina protectorate. In March 1945 Japan took the control and ruled through Bao Day who renamed his country “Vietnam”. Bao Dai abdicated in August 1945 when Japan surrendered. He would be elected Chief of the State of Vietnam 1949-55 until he was ousted in a fraudulent referendum. An exceptionally rare original Royal jade matrix seal, Emperor Bao Dai, Nguyen dynasty, the very attractive jade stone seal representing a dragon head. Together with a very rare and exceptionally important T.L.S., `Bao Dai´, signed in blue ink over his Royal seal, stamped in red ink and bearing the words “VIET-NAM - PUC BAO DAI”, two pages, 4to, Dalat, 17th December 1953, in French. The typed document, bearing to the upper left corner a blind embossed seal of the State of Vietnam, and beneath the printed text “State of Viet-Nam - His Majesty Bao-Dai”, is an important decree containing three articles, stating `His Majesty Bao-Dai, Chief of State,… Having seen the decree dated 6th June 1952, fixing the composition of the Government… Having seen the letter dated 17th December 1953 by President Nguyen-Van-Tam, submitting the resignation of the Government under his presidency, I decree 1) The Government resignation, constituted under President Nguyen-Van-Tam Presidency is accepted… 2) Until the decree fixing the composition of the new government is issued, all affairs remain granted by President Nguyen-Van-Tam and the members of the government under his Presidency. 3) The President of the Government, Vice-President, Ministers and Secretaries of State are responsible of the execution of the present decree.´ The royal seal on the letter decree was stamped by the Emperor with the matrix seal described above, and offered immediately after to President Nguyen Van-tam after his resignation as a gesture of gratitude for his loyal services. The seal remains in very fine condition and is kept in its original box. VGNguyen Van Tam (1895-1990) Prime Minister of the State of Vietnam 1952-53. Former Governor of Northern Vietnam. His son General Nguyen Van Hinh was Chief of Staff of the Vietnamese National Army, the forces that fought against the Communist Revolution.

HOFFMANN HEINRICH: (1885-1957) German Photographer & Publisher, Adolf Hitler's official photographer and a member of his intimate circle. Hoffmann was tried and sentenced for war profiteering after World War II. An original pencil drawing signed by Heinrich Hoffmann on a 7 x 9.5 light brown card, the detailed and well-executed image depicting a Jewish gentleman in a half length semi-profile pose holding a chalice in one hand. Signed by Hoffmann at the base and with an inscription in his hand to Andreas Birner, in German, to the upper left corner. Beneath his signature Hoffmann has also drawn a small self-caricature showing him taking a photograph from beneath a dark covering with a camera and tripod. A light pencil sketch of the upper part of a man's head appears to the verso. Rare in this form. Two file holes to the left edge, one of which affects the drawing of the hand and with some slight corner creasing, about VGProvenance: The present drawing is accompanied by a certificate of provenance signed by Peter Birner in 2001 stating that Hoffmann presented them to his grandfather, Andreas Birner, who was commander of the German guards in the section of the Nuremberg prison in which Nazi war criminals were held by the International Military Tribunal whilst awaiting their Denazification Trials.

Ritualistic stones and monoliths decorated the Valley of Stones, where the Mystics resided in peace and harmony. The monolith is made of lightweight carved foam, with a swirling Celtic pattern embossed on the front. It is hand painted to resemble grey stone, with faux moss, vines and other artificial plants applied to create an ancient and decrepit look. Designed to only be seen from the front, the rear remains unfinished and hollow, with two square holes cut out of each side. The monolith can be seen in rare test footage of the production team testing various puppets. The item has some wear from production use and age, including areas where the paintwork has cracked and come away. Produced by Drissi Advertising, lamp posts were issued to high profile cinemas to promote the film. It is rare to find one of these as a complete item, as many were disassembled and disposed of after use, with only the "Wanted" poster section retained.The lamp post is made of card and features a holographic "Wanted" poster of Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), in which Black disappears and reappears depending on the viewing angle. Underneath the image of Black is text reading "Coming Soon", along with the film's web address. Directional signs point towards "Hogsmeade" and "Diagon Alley", and the post's two lamps are covered in shiny foil to give the impression of being lit. It is glazed with a light and dark brown finish, and there are two holes on the rear allowing it to be displayed. The lot consists of eight call sheets (several with attached location maps), memos and shooting schedules, plus an early design for a press pack featuring rare artwork and an unused film logo. The lot additionally includes six "staff and crew" lists, three invitations to cast-and-crew screenings, a flyer for the wrap party, 32 pages of budget paperwork and 11 pages of copied handwritten notes detailing pre-production meetings on locations, financing, distribution, casting and more. The casting notes reveal an interesting list of actors who were approached for the movie, including Kurt Russell, Mel Gibson, Rosanna Arquette, Christopher Reeve and Bruce Springsteen. V's (Hugo Weaving) Guy Fawkes mask from James McTeigue's dystopian drama V for Vendetta. Freedom fighter V (Hugo Weaving) donned a mask modelled on the face of Guy Fawkes, the architect of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, throughout the film, including when he hijacked the fascist news network BTN. Created for the film at Babelsberg Studio, this principal-character V mask is constructed of fibreglass with a black Velcro® strap and mesh-covered eye and mouth holes. The hero masks for the film were sculpted by Berndt Wenzel and painted by Susi Montoro; the mask is meticulously airbrushed with a semi-gloss finish. While the film's final crowd scene featured many background V masks made from vac-formed plastic, this fiberglass mask is a principal-character piece for V himself and is far more rare than the background masks. Fiberglass masks were also used for the convenience store robbery and the mask shipment sent to Detective Finch (Stephen Rea). It is in excellent overall condition with minimal wear from production. It is a rare and interesting survival. Amongst others, the assistance of the Jewish angel, Nuriel, is petitioned in the inscription. According to an ancient Kabbalistic source Nuriel was associated with love and his name was therefore inscribed on amulets to bring lovers together. Pregnant women also wore amulets inscribed with Nuriel's name for protection. The solar barge was the vessel of the sun god Ra, and the most well-known bronze of this type is the solar barque of the pharaoh Djedhor, now at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, inv. no. 168. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo holds another complete example, and an incomplete bronze solar boat finial can be found in the Museum Vleeshuis, Antwerp, acc. no. 79.1. (E. Gubel, Du Nil a L'Escaut , Brussels, 1991, p. 244-5, fig. 326).Full-size solar barges have been discovered buried near pyramids and temples, most notably the Khufu ship excavated from the Great Pyramid of Giza and dating to the 4th Dynasty. By the Late Period, this insignia was used in religious processions and ceremonies, and depicted the pharaoh accompanying Ra on his journeys.Michel Holley (b. 1924) is a noted architect, and sailing enthusiast. M. Holley studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the studio of Otello Zavaronia, and was elected Grand Massier in 1954. A keen member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, M. Holley took part in the 1973 Cowes Admiralty Cup with the Izenah IV. His love of the nautical inspired his collection, which though drawn from the breadth of the Greek, Roman and Egyptian cultures, is bound by a fascination with seafaring.
