THE DROMOLAND CASTLE MEGALOCEROS GIGANTEUS.A set of prehistoric Giant Irish Deer antlers and skull, c. 12,000 - 8,000 BC. Span width c.2.9m.Provenance: The Clan O’Brien at Dromoland Castle from the late 17th century, thence by descent to the current Lord Inchiquin, 18th Baron. On loan to Bunratty Castle from 1962.The Giant Deer or Megaloceros giganteus was, as the Latin name suggests, far and away the largest deer that ever lived and examples are recorded as having been 8’ long, from head to tail and standing 7’ tall at their shoulders. They originated during the Pleistocene Period of the Great Ice Age and roamed from Ireland in the west to Siberia in the east. It is thought that the climatic changes following the Ice Age may have contributed to their eventual demise and ultimately it’s extinction. The high calcium carbonate content of the marl which underlies bogland is conducive to the preservation of bones hence the concentration of remains of the Giant Irish Deer discovered in counties Waterford, Cork and Clare over the centuries. Many of these antlers, following an age-old fashion, featured in baronial banquet halls. Anne Crookshank and the Knight of Glin in The Watercolours of Ireland, (Barrie & Jenkins, 1994) noted that :From as far back as 1586 there is an accurately portrayed sketch, now in the National Museum of Ireland, recording the discovery of the head and antlers of an extinct Irish Giant Deer found in that year and preserved by Adam Loftus, Ireland’s Lord Chancellor, who built Rathfarnham Castle in the 1580s. In Loftus’s letter of 27th September 1597 to Sir Robert Cecil, Queen Elizabeth’s all-powerful Secretary of State, in which he was planning to send the head to Cecil, he describes it as follows: “the rare greatness of it made me…. set (it) up in the hall of a poor house which I built here.

VENETIAN SCHOOL (c.1700)The Doge's banquet in the new banqueting hall by the Channel of San Marco with an attendance of councillors, presidents of tribunals, magistrates, foreign ambassadors, the tables decorated with objets d'art and the sideboard piled with silver and gold chargers and dishesOil on canvas, 60 x 116cm Provenance: Earls Annesley, CastlewellanThe Doge of Venice, as part of the governance of the city, held five official banquets a year; the Feast of the Ascension; St Mark's Day; the Feast of St. Vitus; the Feast of St Jerome and St Stephen's Day on the 26th December. Senior officials and magistrates attended while foreign ambassadors eagerly sought initiations as this was the one opportunity of avoiding the ban on talking to the doge and patriciate. Each feast represented a different facet of Venetian ceremonial life, Ascension day was also the day the Doge symbolically threw a gold ring into the lagoon and participants dined afterwards. The picture on back wall depicts the Bucintoro, the ceremonial barge used in this ceremony and this perhaps is the banquet depicted. The public were allowed to view the first course and to admire the table and sideboard decorations. As the power of Venice declined these became increasingly elaborated and etiquette more and more formal. We are grateful to Peter Lauritzen for making available his unpublished treatise on 'Venetian Art & Ceremonial', for the above cataloguing. He notes that depictions of these banquets are extremely rare.

AN IRISH BOG OAK BOOK SLIDE, 19th century, attributed to Cornelius Goggin, the sliding base with central carving of an Irish harp, inside a profusely decorated border of trailing shamrocks, the hinged folding bookends, one carved depicting an Irish Wolfhound seated beside a tree trunk, the other as an Irish Harp surrounded by shamrocks, 36cm wide (when closed), 22cm high, 8cm deepIrish Bog Oak is a rare timber excavated from deep underground, usually as a by-product of turf cutting, or when bogland is drained for agricultural use. The wood has been preserved due to the unique conditions of the bog, and is is usually jet black in colour. Ireland, in the 19th century, had a thriving bog wood industry in Dublin, with representation also in other main cities and in the tourist towns such as Killarney. It was a highly desirable material with pieces ranging from emblematic jewellery, book ends and candlesticks to intricately carved suites of furniture. In the 19th century Neo- Celtic style reflected the growing fascination with Ireland’s ancient, cultural and artistic past. This was a decorative style based on Celtic motifs and designs characterised by the use of symbols such as the shamrock, Irish harp, round tower and wolfhound, with interlacing patterns incorporating Gaelic script from the Book of Kells. Cornelius Goggin moved to Dublin in 1849, where he set up business in the city centre. In the 1853 Dublin Exhibition, he showed a candelabrum in bog oak Irish silver, he also exhibited bracelets, brooches, necklaces, bookstands, chess boards and other articles and in bog oak. By 1852 Cornelius Goggin had moved to 13 Nassau Street, where he ran a bog oak and Killarney wood warehouse until his death on 1st July 1865. He had also become purveyor ‘to her Majesty’. A bog oak inkstand, in the shape of an owl, by Goggin, is on display in the National Museum of Ireland.
