1938 MG VA 1½ two door 4 seat open tourerReg No. JMC154Car No. VA1369 Engine No. TPBG1632Dark Red with Red interior, Black Hood and Black Side screensOdometer 88625The MG VA, or MG 1½-litre as it was originally marketed, was produced by MG between February 1937 and September 1939 and was the smallest of the three sports saloons they produced in the late 1930s, the others being the SA and WA.The car used a tuned version of the push-rod, 1548cc overhead valve four-cylinder Morris TPBG type engine that was also fitted to the Wolseley 12/48 and Morris Twelve series III. The MG version had twin SU carburettors and developed 54 bhp at 4500 rpm. Drive was to the live rear axle via a four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios. Nineteen-inch wire wheels were fitted, and the 10-inch drum brakes were hydraulically operated using a Lockheed system. In-built hydraulic jacks were standard. Suspension was by half-elliptic springs all round with a live rear axle and beam front axle. Luvax shock absorbers were fitted, the rear ones adjustable from the dashboard. There were only 2,407 VA’s of all body types produced prior to production ending which ensures that these vehicles today remain rare and collectable. This car was purchased by the late deceased owner in April 2001, unfortunately no history is available although it saw regular use up until his death, no record of expenditure can be found. From the DVLA records the last pass MOT recorded was on the 28/06/2007 at a mileage of 88,118.This rare tourer presents in a sound and solid condition, having had fresh fuel and a new battery the car started instantly. It is difficult to say what restoration has been undertaken in the past however, it would appear that little extra work would be required to bring this to an excellent condition. It should be noted that the hood would benefit with replacement along with fresh carpeting to the interior.Sold with V5.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report: From a local deceased estate.Car runs well, although will need recommissioning as has stood for approx 2.5 years.Body and structure very good, however paintwork now showing some wear. Some panels are suffering from micro-blistering.Paint loss to bulkhead.Small chips to front of near-side wing and inside of bumper.Interior with age wear but complete - damage to edges only.Hood would need replacing.Carpets are worn and with some moth damage.Chrome generally good, with some modest tarnishing in places including to lamps.Interior panels very good.Instrument panel complete but showing some age wear.

1949 Land Rover Series One.Registration Number TAS 185,Chassis number R8666588,Engine number 866633, Odometer 37680.This Series 1, 80" left the factory in June 1949. It is in exceptional and original condition throughout with factory original gaps and no major flaws visible. No filler is evident and the panels are remarkable for a Land Rover of this age. Inner wings, engine compartment etc., are all in good order and the rear floor is straight suggesting the vehicle had only ever had light use in its 72 years.Lights are of the correct original early Lucas type and in good order. Vintage Cibie dipping spotlights were fitted at a later date. The wire hinged door tops are in exceptional condition as are the hood and framework. Lightly used Avon Traction tyres fitted. It is extremely rare to find original seats in an early Series 1. This example retains the now obsolete, original pattern vinyl with Dunlopillo foam bases. The instruments are correct and in excellent original order. The dash retains early features such as the illuminated "oil" light, red tipped 20/20 ammeter and correct and rare panel light switch. Steering wheel, bakelite horn push and dip switch assembly are complete, original and very well presented. A working Smiths heater and windscreen demister vents are non original but sympathetically fitted. A correct early single wiper is fitted. The Land Rover is also highly desirable in that it retains its original "matching numbers" engine and running gear. The 1595cc engine runs beautifully suggesting that the low recorded mileage of 37680 is pretty much correct. Our vendor is the fourth owner and has owned the vehicle for nine years. Having researched the history of this Series 1 with the two previous owners, the original owner who had it for 26 years in Sussex did an estimated 32000 miles. The second owner, an enthusiast, resprayed the Land Rover probably around 1978. That owner, lived for many years on the Isle of Mull and used the vehicle rarely on an Isle where big road trips don't happen! The only existing MOT shows mileage at 36990 on 17.12.2003. Usage with this second owner plus the third owner in Suffolk and the vendor are estimated at only 5000-6000 miles. The last three owners ensured the vehicle was stored under cover. Our opinion is that the current mileage is likely to be correct underlining the uniqueness of this Series 1.The chassis number R8666588 places this as one of the first ever deep bronze green Land Rovers and the lights behind the grille and ring-pull gearbox highlight this as an early vehicle.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report:Bulkhead in good condition with no apparent repairs.Chassis good.Has been re-sprayed at some point.

These restorations cost in excess of £30,000.The 1959 Jaguar XK150 drophead coupé replaced the XK120 & the XK140, and was the predecessor to the E-type Jaguar. This rare and beautiful classic sports touring model was built in Coventry in Jaguar’s glowing era, and only 69 right hand versions were produced. Top speed was 132mph, with the 3.4 litre engine taking 7.8 seconds to reach 60mph. A one-piece windscreen replaced the split-screen, and the walnut dashboard was replaced by a leather trimmed version. Just perfect for long tours and exploring country roads, although the fuel consumption was a mere 22 miles per gallon.Sold with Jaguar dust coverTwo ignition keysIMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report: We have had running, but by bypassing the fuel pump. (new fuel pump now fitted and video shows car running well)Recommissioning would include cooling system flushing.Brake reservoir low on fluid – brakes require fluid and re-bleeding.Clutch appears good.Chassis and bodywork are excellent.Chrome very good to excellent – minor tarnishing to rear bumper and number plate plinth.Hood excellent. No soft top cover when hood down.Interior and boot excellent, fully restored/refurbished.This is an original drophead coupe.Engine and chassis numbers match original log book. ANCELL STRONACH (SCOTTISH 1901-1981) WHERE SINKS THE VOICE OF MUSIC INTO SILENCE Signed and dated 1924, oil on canvas(127cm x 102cm (50in x 40in))Provenance: Purchased by John W.D. Thomson in 1980. Exhibited: The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, 1924; ‘Ten Years of The Fine Art Society in Glasgow’ exhibition, 1989.Footnote: Note: Ancell Stronach is generally an unfamiliar name, even to Scottish Art enthusiasts, but in his day he was a significant figure in the Scottish art scene. Born in Dundee, he trained at the Glasgow School of Art, winning many awards and a travelling scholarship during his studentship. Following his studies, he worked professionally as an artist; designing stained glass, painting murals, decorating churches and establishing a reputation as a portrait artist. Alongside his own painting, he also taught, rising to the position of Professor of Mural Painting at Glasgow School of Art. He was elected a member of the R.S.A. in 1934, and exhibited internationally; at the R.S.A., R.A., Paris Salon and in exhibitions in Canada, New Zealand and America. All the markers of a significant and accomplished career. ‘Where Sinks the Voice of Music Into Silence’ is bold and decorative, with the vibrant colour and ecclesiastical details that were the signature of his painting at this time. Stronach pulls detail, poetry and inspiration together masterfully in this work, with areas of rich, flat colour interspersed with delicate patterning and design. A strikingly decorative piece on first glance, close attention reveals generously considered details in aspects as diverse as the tendrils of the male figures beard, the curling waves at the bottom corner and the snow-topped hills in the distance. The composition is accomplished: the delicately delineated angelic wings are centred in the canvas, with the figures placed in a ‘V’ around them, maintaining balance and visual interest as every inch of canvas is utilised. The result is a richly rewarding viewing experience. Stronach’s poetic title does little to reveal the meaning or moment that this work depicts but it assists in evoking the atmosphere that the painting itself conveys. The feeling is symbolic and meaningful with a sense of mysticism, creativity and spirituality. Artistically, Stronach was inspired by early Italian fresco painters and the Pre-Raphaelites, though his commitment to mural painting and stained glass design also shines through in this significant work. His chosen style and subject reflects the wider Celtic Revival movement prevalent in Scotland’s arts scene at this time and visible in the work of other artists such as John Duncan and Phoebe Anna Traquair. The Celtic Revival and the Pre-Raphaelites were concerned with looking to a distant past for inspiration and Stronach strives for that here. The ensuing melding of historic and modern lends the painting an essential timelessness in its beauty. At the outbreak of war in 1939, Stronach felt his opportunities as an artist were greatly reduced by the extenuating circumstances and took the opportunity to change direction, pursuing a long-standing interest in animals and the circus. He married a professional acrobat and they toured together with his show, entitled ‘Ancell and his 40 Painted Pigeons.’ He did not engage with the art world over the course of the rest of his life though it is believed he continued to paint for personal pleasure. It is for this reason that his name remains relatively unknown and the appearance of his works on the market so rare; ultimately his professional painting career only lasted for a very limited period, despite his talent and success. ‘Where Sinks the Voice of Music into Silence’ was first exhibited at The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts in 1924. More recently it was purchased by the current vendor’s late husband at the Fine Art Society in 1980. The vendor remembers the dramatic moment of seeing this work for the first time, and the immediate decision to purchase. In the forty years since, it has hung in just two locations, his architectural practice in the West End of Glasgow and their home in Stirlingshire. A rare opportunity now presents itself for this richly dramatic and decorative work to find a new home.

(SCOTTISH 1898-1973) ST VALERY Signed, watercolour(48cm x 63cm (19in x 25in))Provenance: Mercury Gallery, Edinburgh April 1987 Literature: W. Gordon Smith, W. G. Gillies - A Very Still Life 1991, Ill. pp.24, 25, 51Footnote: Note: Gillies’ early training in Paris is well-documented; less well-known is his 1938 sojourn in the French fishing port of St Valery-en-Caux, Normandy, in the company of the artist Johnnie Maxwell. This evocative watercolour is a rare souvenir from this trip. Made spontaneously and without preparatory drawing, colour has been applied in urgent, bold strokes evoking an atmospheric windy day in the French coastal town. The luscious, expressive mark-making demonstrate Gillies’ admiration for the French masters of interior painting such as Vuillard and Bonnard, yet for Gillies it was in his landscapes painted en plein air that he felt he could best capture a sense of vibrancy and immediacy. This watercolour typifies the artist’s ability not only to record his surroundings, but to also lay down an unmediated emotional response to the world around him. The emotional intensity of Gillies’ painting from around this period is perhaps best explained by the sense of tragedy that defined his life in the latter half of the 1930s: as tensions mounted in the build-up to the Second World War, Gillies also suffered a bitter personal loss through the death of his younger sister Emma, who succumbed to ill health in 1935. Herself a talented ceramicist, Gillies had painted Emma a number of times, and the siblings shared a close and affectionate relationship. In the wake of this loss, Gillies threw himself into his craft with renewed devotion, with the resulting work demonstrating an exploration of the boundaries between intimacy and intensity. Gillies’ influence on Scottish landscape painting has been profound, and this vivid watercolour is a rare instance of the artist applying his distinctive vision to a subject-matter further afield.

1931 ROLLS-ROYCE 20/25 Coachwork by Park Ward. Registration Number: LJ4400, Chassis Number: GP531, Engine Number: F4D. Provenance: The Estate of the Late Rufus Eyre. This Rolls-Royce 20/25 has exceptionally been owned by the same family for its entire history. It is remarkably rare for a car of this age and quality to have such an exemplary pedigree. The Rolls-Royce 20/25 was the luxury pre-war car that is recognised as the saviour of the Rolls-Royce marque. It was only due to the popularity and success of this vehicle among the mega wealthy of the 1930's, that the company was able to survive the Great Depression. The 20/25 was developed from the 20hp, with an aim to increase driving performance and opulence. It was first debuted at the 1929 Olympia Motor Show and received instant international success. The 20/25 benefitted greatly by marked improvements to the 20's six-cylinder engine. The engine size was increased to 3669cc and the cylinder bore diameter was widened by 0.25 inches. The additional power this created served the car two-fold; firstly, it enabled the car to reach higher speeds, secondly, it enabled coachbuilders to fit larger and more extravagant bodies to the rolling chassis. Both consequences appealed greatly to the luxury grand-touring set of the industrious 1930's. Purchased in 1931 as a limousine, bodied by Park Ward, for the father of the Late Rufus Eyre. It was garaged in the same block as it is today, with the quarters for the driver on the floor above. The Park Ward body is number 3541. The interior has plush leather seats and a divider between passenger and driver, this is a car you could comfortably drive and be driven in. The car has been unused for some time and will require a service. However, these cars were exceptionally well designed, with 70% of the 3,827 produced still road worthy. As well as this there is a large and active Rolls-Royce club who offer a vast network of support for buyers. The single-owner history of this 20/25, plus its distinguished reputation within the brands history, make GP531 a highly desirable and collectable vehicle for all car enthusiasts.Buyer's Premium on lots 1 - 18 10% (plus VAT), All other lots 25% (plus VAT). Lot 4

1937 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM III BARKER SEDANCA DE VILLE. Registration Number: PL 452, Chassis Number: 3BT17, Engine Number: Q78L. 'The most carefully constructed, the most silent, the most big, the most effortless, the most durable, the most good-looking. Above all, it was the most regardless-of-cost of all Rolls'. Motorsport Magazine. When unveiled at the 1935 Motor Show at Olympia, many believed the Rolls-Royce Phantom III to be the best car ever made. Only the grandest Rolls-Royces were branded Phantoms, and they were sold at a super-premium price. The final car produced by Rolls Royce before the war and the last car that Henry Royce worked on, the Phantom III stands as a statement of both luxury and technological advancement. Key to the success of the Phantom III was the massive V12 power plant. Rolls-Royce utilised innovations gained from their experiences with aeroplane engines, notably the record breaking S6B Seaplane. Employing advanced techniques and materials, the Phantom engine could produce between 165 and 180bhp. This resulted in a top speed of 90-100mph, incredibly impressive considering the weight of luxury attached to each car. Moreover, these were the first Rolls to operate with independent front suspension. Designed to be the zenith of luxury, each of the 729 Phantom III's to be produced were individually custom built. This example is one of only 19 Sedanca de Ville versions produced by the greatly revered Barker coachbuilders. In 1903, Rolls-Royce stated that Barker were the "preferred coach builder" for their motorcars, most appropriate considering their past role outfitting coaches for the Royal family. In 1938 Barker were taken over by Hooper, making 3BT17 one of the last cars to be assembled by these prodigious coachbuilders. Among the original specifications for this rare Sedanca de Ville are a retractable roof for the driver and a fixed roof for the rear, covering a sofa seat clad in traditional West of England cloth. Also specified was the louvred body and fine Marchal headlamps from Paris, each fitment stylishly preparing the car for warm long trips to the continent. The car is exceptionally outfitted with the finest polished burr walnut door panels and dashboard, as well as a rather unique full-sized pull up picnic table in the rear. Stepping in as a passenger is like going back to a lost age of chauffeur-driven luxury. This Phantom III has a well-documented and interesting history, maintaining its original registration throughout its entire life with matching engine, chassis and body numbers as assembled in production. 3BT17 was first delivered to Mr C F Bernhard of Grosvenor House, London, whose chauffeur, A D Ross, was put through the Rolls-Royce school of instruction. In 1962, the car passed to Bill Klein, a US-based Rolls-Royce fanatic. After spending a few years in the States, 3BT17 was then sold to a Mr M Lasky of Australia. In 1996 the Phantom was owned by prestigious automotive businessman Izzie Herzog; under his supervision, with no expense spared, a back-to-the-metal restoration project was undertaken. The work was carried out by Des Higgins Motors, an authorised and highly regarded Rolls-Royce specialist. The restorations included all coach work being stripped and precisely refinished in Green and Black. The interior was also sympathetically retrimmed, to the exceptional standard we see today. This expertly conducted project showed great respect to the cars originality and granted this stunning Phantom further longevity. In 2004 the car was sold to our current London-based vendor, a true Rolls -Royce devotee, who undertook a substantial mechanical restoration. Over the last few years more than £80,000 has been spent getting this car to near concourse condition. This included a full engine rebuild in 2016; encompassing all 12 cylinder liners, cylinder heads, pistons, valves and seals. In addition, a new rear axle, radiator core, exhaust system and Bosch ignition upgrade were installed, and both the clutch and steering box were overhauled. All of the instrument panel lettering has been detailed in sharp white and there are fine gold coach lines, painted with an exceptionally steady hand. The headlamps were even re-silvered in 2020. All of this work is evidenced with invoices. With barely 1,000 miles driven since this major overhaul, the restored engine has only just been broken in and is ready for grand touring. This work was primarily carried out by the well-respected Bruce Thompson, with original parts supplied by the late specialist John Little. Bruce is available for consultation by interested parties. Rewards for the quality and stateliness of this car's appearance include the Trophy of Elegance in the South of England RREC Rally, and first prize in the Phantom III Touring section of the RREC Annual National Rally. Moreover, you are rewarded every time you drive, or are driven, in this car. The Barker Phantom III Sedanca de Ville is famous world over as the car driven by perhaps pop culture's most infamous chauffeur, Oddjob, in the classic Goldfinger James Bond. No other car could be as appropriate for such a lavish and practical remit, the smuggling of gold across the Alps. Other owners of the Phantom III included Dukes and Duchesses, Titans of Industry and Monarchs from across the globe. This was a car that cost more than a fine house at the time of its release. Only the Phantom III carries presence of the sort that both Royalty and Bond villains maintain. The car comes with the original 1930s handbook, a photo book covering its 1990's restoration in Australia, full ownership history and original build records, as well as restoration invoices and service records from 2004 onwards. This car is a true statement of British engineering and design class. It has been restored to its full glory and is now ready to offer a proud new owner many years of grand touring adventures.Buyer's Premium on lots 1 - 18 10% (plus VAT), All other lots 25% (plus VAT).
