Ex Nomos 1 (6 May 2009), lot 185; Numismatica Ars Classica 26 (27 June 2003), lot 3364.Little is known of this Rhodian Grandmaster. Born of a noble family in Languedoc, Dieudonné de Gozon achieved a reputation when he slew a “dragon” - a large crocodile that had been been hiding in a local swamp and killing the local livestock. For this, he was given the epithet ‘Dragonslayer’ (Extinctor draconis). In 1347/8, Dieudonné de Gozon led the Knights of Rhodes to assist Constantine IV of Armenia, who was then being threatened by the Sultan of Egypt. This coin was almost certainly struck towards the end of Gozon’s reign since equally rare examples of the same type were struck by his successor, Pierre de Corneillan (1354-1355). They must have been struck in very small numbersand intended as presentation pieces - they are now among the greatest rarities of all the issues of the Knights of Rhodes.

Ex Classical Numismatic Group XXIX (30 March 1994), lot 1370.This coin was part of a first issue of gold ducats struck by Antony Fluviano. A direct copy of the Venetian trade ducat, Fluviano was soon required to modify the design, when Venice strongly protested. Retaining the general Venetian type, Fluviano simply replaced the name of San Marco with that of San Giovanni Battista, the patron of the Knights of Rhodes (see Gorny and Mosch 217, lot 4044 for an example of the second type). While both varieties are considered very rare, the earlier variety is considered tends to be more so with less than seven appearing at auction in the past decade

Ex Siegfried Schierhorn Collection (Künker 176, 29 September 2010), lot 5889 (hammer €4.200); Rasmussen 389 (31 January 1979), lot 3037.The ‘Stridsperioden’ (literally meaning a ‘time of dispute’) is the name given by Danish historians to the period when rival Danish and Norwegian claimants (Magnus den Gode, Harald Hardråde, and Svend Estridsen) fought for the Danish throne. During this period, circa 1044-1047, Lund changed hands many times. Because of this, the mint produced a number of dies with the names blundered, so that any coins produced would be accepted by whichever king controlled the mint at a given time.

Signed by Hilderaldo Bellini (1930-2014) Brazilian Footballer, Captain of the first Brazilian team to win the World Cup in 1958 and by Djalma Santos (1929-2013) Brazilian Footballer, a member of the World Cup winning teams of 1958 and 1962. Bellini has signed in black ink to a clear area at the head of the cover, adding 1958 in his hand, and Santos has signed in black fountain pen ink with his name alone across a clear area at the centre of one of the postage stamps. The cover bears the address cachet of the collector Ronald Antinoris. VG The National Stamp Exhibition of 1966 is remembered for being the venue of the theft of the Jules Rimet Trophy. Stanley Gibbons' stamp company had received permission to place the Trophy in the Exhibition on condition that it would be under guard at all times. The Exhibition was held in the Westminster Central Hall and opened on 19th March 1966, and the World Cup was a major attraction. Two uniformed officers guarded the trophy around the clock, reinforced by two plainclothes officers during the day. Nevertheless, on 20th March, guards noticed that the display case had been broken into and the Trophy stolen. A Flying Squad investigation commenced, involving anonymous telephone calls and ransom demands, before the Trophy was famously recovered by David Corbett and his dog Pickles on 27th March 1966.
