[Laws on Boundaries, Estates] Monti, 1562 Monti, Girolamo. The same device is located at last leaf's verso, but in a bigger and more decorated frame. Historiated xylographic head-letters.Scarce edition of this treaty regarding the rule of boundaries by the jurisconsult Girolamo Monti. Fundamental work to regulate the territory, introducing basic criteria in border management; e.g.: Finis iurisdictionis alluvione non mutantur (the boundaries of a property does not change due to flood) and Fines territorii non probant dominium rerum inclusarum in territorio (boundaries doesn't imply ownership of everything is located inside them). This important treaty had great authority in the sixteenth century. “Even in the mid-sixteenth century, when it is published a major work on the boundaries, that is the "Tractatus de finibus" by Girolamo Monti, you can easily notice as the idea of the border is related not only to that of territory, but also to the exercise of powers, prerogatives, rights which, though having a territorial influence, pass through communities, social bodies, individuals. This is the idea of medieval iurisdictio more than the modern idea of sovereignty which should be adjusted in the manner of its deployment.” (from: "I giuristi e i confini - L’elaborazione giuridica della nozione di confine tra medioevo ed età moderna" [The jurists and the boundaries - The development of the legal concept of a boundary between the Middle Ages and Early Modern], by Paolo Marchetti, 2003). Girolamo Monti (Hieronymus de Monte) (?-1522) was a nobleman, a priest and a jurisconsult; he was also apostolic protonotary.Provenance: Some old handwritten inscriptions and study underscores; a handwritten ownership inscription at title-page (De Solarijs ?). References: IT\ICCU\MILE\008455. CNCE, 40967. OCLC, 28889833. Lozzi, 5774 (ed. 1574). Occasional brownings at some leaves and rare marginal waterstains. Overall, a very good and unsofisticated copy in its original limp vellum binding.

[24], 304. Two engraved printer’s device.Extremely rare edition of Roffredus' masterpiece. Each 'libellus' deals briefly with a different subject, ranging from episcopal powers to marriage, tithes and patronage; the substantial section on marriage considers issues as diverse as impotence, annulment, consanguinity, and marriage of minors, of those of different religion, or of those in sacred orders. Roffredus of Benevento (c. 1170-1244) was a well known jurist and advocate, at various times on either side of the conflict between the emperor Frederick II and the papacy. Roffredus based his work on the practice of the Roman Curia, and wrote that it was intended for 'jurists who know little or nothing of canon law'; humorous and sometimes anti-clerical, he approaches canon law rather as an extension of his own speciality of civil law. Provenance: 1. Owner's signature Cesare Fedele at title-page. 2. Ex-libris of Board of Law Library Trustees, Los Angeles.References: CNCE 74011 (4 copies). Out of Italy, OCLC locates only 1 copy worldwide at Harvard University. A light water-stain at some leaves and a small stain at the corner of some leaves, but a very fine copy.

* JAMES COWIE RSA LLD (SCOTTISH 1886 - 1956), ABSTRACT COMPOSITION, UNTITLED oil on board, signed 50.8cm x 60.9cm (20 x 24 inches) Framed Note: James Cowie was always fascinated by the way a reflective surface could create an illusion of reality and he constantly experimented with perspective. In this extremely rare example, Cowie has created a near abstract work. It is undated but was probably completed near the end of his career. This is an important work by one of Scotland's most individual and influentiual painters of the 20th century. Born in Aberdeenshire, Cowie studied at Glasgow School of Art and famously completed his Diploma course in a mere two years.. He taught at Bellshill Academy, near Glasgow 1915 - 1935 and later became Warden at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath. His style of painting was precise and linear. Cowie was an admirer of Poussin and the Pre-Raphaelite painters and believed in the classical values of self-restraint and objectivity. He had a meticulous way of working and believed that art was a product of thought and reason. His pupils included Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Joan Eardley. Thirty-two of James Cowie's paintings are held in Public Collections including at The Tate, The Hunterian, Glasgow Museums & Art Galleries, The Fleming Collection, The National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh City Council, the Royal Scottish Academy, Dundee Art Galleries & Museums, Angus Council, Perth and Kinross Council, Aberdeen Art Galleries & Museums, University of Edinburgh, University of Aberdeen, City of Edinburgh Council and The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Private Edinburgh collection.

* KATHARIINE (KATE) CAMERON RSW (SCOTTISH 1874 - 1965), LAVENGRO & JASPER watercolour, pencil and ink, signed with initials as part of the inscription inscribed 'KC NOV 11 1921 to AK'. (Armistice Day) 27cm x 21cm Mounted, framed and under glass Provenance: acquired Bourne Fine Art, Edinburgh, with label verso. Note: AK refers to Arthur Kay HRSA, the Glasgow businessman and noted art connoisseur, who married Kate Cameron in 1928. A rare personal gift from Cameron to her future husband with her characteristic pencil and watercolour floral decoration in exceptional condition. The text is from chapter 25 of Lavengro: The Scholar, the Gypsy, the Priest (1851) by George Borrow. Falling somewhere between the genres of memoir and novel, which has long been considered a classic of 19th-century English literature. According to the author lav-engro is a Romany word meaning ''word master''. The historian G. M. Trevelyan called it ''a book that breathes the spirit of that period of strong and eccentric characters''. After Borrow's death in 1881 Lavengro began to find a new audience and enthusiastic praise from critics. Theodore Watts, in an introduction to the 1893 edition, declared that ''There are passages in Lavengro which are unsurpassed in the prose literature of England''. This edition started a run of reprints which produced one or more almost every year for 60 years. Lavengro was included in the Oxford University Press World's Classics series in 1904.
