Charles Dickens First Edition Book 'The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club', Victorian era, circa 1837. A mixed issue first edition of ''The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club'' aka ''The Pickwick Papers'' by Charles Dickens, published in London by Chapman and Hall, 186 Strand, with illustrations by Seymour & Phiz, as well as the front piece and vignette title page. It also has early issue points such as ''S. Veller'' present on page 342, line 5. In a move familiar to modern fandom, publishers often created special editions - as this one is with its hand-drawn illustrations - in order to entice buyers to purchase more than one copy. Size: 6'' W x 8.95'' H (15.2 cm x 22.7 cm). ''Pickwick'' was Dickens' first novel. He was 24, working as a journalist and sketch writer, when the publishers, Chapman and Hall, asked him to author small comic stories based on a series of illustrated plates to be made by Robert Seymour. Dickens accepted the commission but the stories quickly took on a life of their own. Seymour illustrated the first few, and then Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne) the rest. The latter proved to be a fruitful partnership and Phiz went on to illustrate many of Dickens' books. The character of Sam Weller in Pickwick led to the book becoming a massive publishing phenomenon, with bootleg copies, joke books, and other merchandise as well as multiple unlicensed stage productions. Real Pickwick Clubs sprang up about the country, including the Pickwick Bicycle Club in London, which is still in operation, and whose members are bestowed with a name of a character from the novel. This book is in aged condition, with a detached front cover and some loose pages, but a rare and collectible item. See accompanying images.

A good and rare pair of large Chinese gouache paintings, dated Daoguang (1821-50), Spring and Autumn 1849, each with numerous figures in a garden and passing two officials in a garden study and on a bridge, the other with a procession of riders and a long retinue on a road passing several rooms of figures, long inscription, slightly creasing, 100cm x 166cm  (2) Provenance:  These have come privately from a fairly largeresidence in Belgravia and the vendor states that they have been stored awayfor several years.  There is a littlediscolouration around the edge of the border and there is some flaking of paintand what looks like historic “damp” possibly mainly confined to the edges ofthe border going into the painting a little. There looks like a central fold etc., (now flat under glass).  The painting with the mandarins in blue andred caps predominantly lower left has areas of distressing again mostly aroundthe edges where it meets the borders. There is also some further distressing within the painting in variousplaces (quite prevalent around the area with the Chinese characters (seeimages).  Some fading of colours, somepaintwork away and condition generally commensurate with age on both paintingsunder glass.  See many images taken.

Lot 84

A rare Qianlong mark and probably period, copper red porcelain vase, the pearl body with flared mouth and foot and under an overall deep red, slightly mottled, glaze, the foot purple, the glaze stopping nearly at mouth and foot, barely visible scratch, six character seal mark in underglaze blue, 31cm. (For a similar vase, 29cm high and with a similar mark, see Sotheby's Hong Kong 8th October 2010, Lot 2656)PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO LIVE INTERNET BIDDING ON THIS LOT, ANYBODY WISHING TO BID ON LOT 84 IS REQUIRED TO LODGE A £3,000 DEPOSIT WITH THE AUCTIONEERS NO LATER THAN 6.00PM ON WEDNESDAY 16TH OCTOBER. ANY DEPOSITS LODGED ARE FULLY REFUNDABLE IF YOU ARE NOT THE WINNING BIDDER.Generally the vase is in good overall untouched original condition with no restoration, chips, cracks or hairlines etc., although it does exhibit a slight scratch to the glaze.  There are two areas where the glaze is un-uniform and significantly lighter and these areas are approx. 1cm square each.  There are minor pin head sized pieces away from the glaze overall body, the foot rim appears slightly darker than the main body and there is a small original firing blemish to the underside.  Except for these “minor faults” the vase is in good general overall condition with no major problems.  There is interest at the £40,000 - £60,000 level.  We have had several people of high stature in the Chinese ceramic world look at this and the piece is generally considered to be definitely mark and period and there are no cracks, chips, hairlines or restorations noted.

Lot 94

A fine and rare Clichy sulphide paperweight of faceted form; full-length sulphide portrayal of Napoleon Bonaparte against a blue ground with an outer garland of white canes interspersed with pink and green roses (8.6cm diameter x 6.2cm high)  Provenance: Sotheby's November 1986 (Lot No. 386), ex Guggenheim CollectionThe weight does not seem to have a “great deal” wrong with it.  There is some “minor” surface scratching to the faceted surface surrounding the circular viewpoint looking at the weight from the top, other scratches and extremely minor pinpoint sized “dings” visible under a glass.  There appears to be a minor “imperfection” to the edge of the underside of the foot where the glass is slightly uneven.  In our opinion this could well be an original fault when the weight was first made.  The weight feels very heavy in the hand and there are some minor bubbling “inclusions” to the inside of the weight with the head clearly visible as very fractionally away from the body of the main sulphide.  The main sulphide of Napoleon is bordered by a floral garland and appears to be in general good overall condition as a whole except for the minor scratching and tiny marks as outlined.
