ROBERT MCGOWAN COVENTRY RSW ARSA (SCOTTISH 1855 - 1914), THE RIVER SEINE AT NOTRE DAME, PARIS oil on board, signedframed image size 40cm x 50cm, overall size 91cm x 72cm Note 1: The Scottish artist Robert McGown (McGowan) Coventry (1855–1914) was born in Glasgow and trained at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees and in Paris. He travelled on the Continent and to the Middle East but found most of his subject matter in the fishing communities of Scotland and in the Scottish Highlands. He was not closely associated with the group of young painters known as the Glasgow Boys, but shared their interest in rustic realism, in painting in the open air, and in French-inspired tonal and compositional technique. He was based in Glasgow throughout his professional life. In 1889 he became a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and in 1906 was elected associate of the Royal Scottish Academy, exhibiting regularly with both organisations and with the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.Note 2: The work on offer is a rare Paris scene depicting the activities of everyday life on the river Seine in the late nineteenth century, which demonstrates the influences of the French masters in the freedom of the brushwork and strong use of colour.

GEORGE HOUSTON RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1869 - 1947), LOCHSIDE VIEW oil on canvas, signedframedimage size 101.5cm x 150cm, overall size 126cm x 170cmNote: a very rare appearance at auction of one of George Houston's largest works. This magnificent painting measures 101.5 x 150cm (approximately 40 x 60 inches) and although undated is very obviously a relatively early (pre 1920) work. Like most painters, Houston favoured various fairly standard sizes of canvas with his standard "large" being 70 x 90cm (or the imperial equivalent). "Lochside View" is almost two and a half times the size (of a 70 x 90cm canvas) and examples of these proportions rarely appear at auction. So far as we can ascertain, the two most recent examples of 40 x 60 inch George Houston works to appear at auction were "A Highland Farmstead" Lyon & Turnbull 21.06.2006 lot 31 which sold for £13,000 (hammer) and "Springtime" Sotheby's (Gleneagles) 26.08.2008 lot 111 which sold for £22,000 (premium). In our opinion, "Lochside View" is of National Collection standard both in terms of size but even more importantly, in terms of quality. George Houston at his best.

Third edition, with the Breton imprint, of this rare costume book. Breton's first edition of 1562 is cited by Colas as THE FIRST KNOWN WORK ON COSTUME. The costume figures are so inspired with imaginative life and visual humor and vitality as to immediately recall the illustrated Pantagruel once ascribed to Rabelais, printed in 1565 by the same printer. Colas maintains that François Descerpz, whose name appears in the dedication to Henri de Bourbon, is the author of the descriptive verses. The woodcuts show figures in costume, printed one to a page and with descriptive verses below. "Among the more remarkable subjects may be the Scots and the Brazilians. Another reference to America is with Le Singe Debout (found near Peru). There are also three grotesque figures resembling those in the Songes Drolatiques de Pantagruel, which was published also by R. Breton in 1565" (Fairfax Murray). According to Borba de Moraes, the "The plates of the Brazilian man and woman are of the greatest importance for the history of Brazilian iconography. They are one of the first likenesses of the Brazilian Indian, and are evidently very faithful" (Borba de Moraes II:259).
