Rare set of six Charles II silver trefid spoons , Lawrence Cole, London 1679 , the lace back bowls each with a ribbed rat-tail and strap handle with four assay marks and a lace scroll hilt initialled on the reverse P over LE, one inscribed 1704, length 19.6 - 19.9cm, 10oz 15dwt in total.*The composition of the silver of these spoons is uniform and consistent with late 17th century London silver; they have however been silver plated at some point in the past. Interesting and rare Empire glass plate skeleton clock with hour strike and Remontoire, the arched glass plate back-painted with a black and gilt line border, also with gilt painted laurel wreath around the white enamel Arabic annular chapter ring, with beaded ormolu bezel secured with screws from behind the glass plate, delicate blued steel hands, the movement train with going barrel secured with steel screws through the plate decorated with blue and gilt reverse painting, the 7.75" diameter great wheel with shaped crossings driving an intermediary Remontoire spring with blued steel three arm flywheel, the Remontoire spring providing power for the going train with pinwheel escapement and knife-edged suspended steel rod pendulum, the Remontoire also providing power to the strike train with countwheel fixed to the Remontoire spring barrel, the brass plate now with brass brackets to each lower corner and resting on an oval black marble plinth on further later yellow velvet-lined rectangular base and brass framed rectangular glass dome, 22.5" high overall (pendulum). Purchased from Sotheby`s Auction of `The Ionides Collection` on 1st November 1963 (lot 10)
Interesting and rare two day marine chronometer of Australian interest, with Earnshaw type balance, the 3" silvered dial signed James Murray, Royal Exchange, London, no. 640 with subsidiary seconds dial, within the original mahogany brass bound hinged case inset with an ivory tablet inscribed Murray, 640, with brass side carrying handles (winding key). This chronometer is sold with copies of official papers detailing its H.M.S. service history. Notably, it was used on board H.M.S Fly (1842-1846) when this ship was deployed surveying the coast of Australia. The lot is also accompanied by a table exhibiting the rates of the chronometers on board H.M.S. Fly during this period. This instrument saw a long active service having been used on board twenty different ships over a period of one hundred and two years. It was finally returned to its owner, after loan to the Admiralty, in 1944. The maker James Murray received several awards for the accuracy of his chronometers and is mentioned in Tony Mercer - Chronometer Makers of the World, `This distinguished Artist who has had the honour of producing the best instrument ever known is a native of Moffat in Dumfries`
