Most were made in steel, being a rugged sports watch, but a few like this example were made in gold and some of those, predominantly for tax reasons, were made in 14K gold. This watch is made rarer still by the use of a black dial with gold subsidiaries which has the distinctive, printed in gold, spaced out Daytona. The movement is engraved ROW which was a designation given to the movements destined for the US market and is in line with it being 14K gold. The reference 570 was launched in the same year, both coming six years later than the reference 96, Patek's first Calatrava. Perhaps most importantly and when compared with the reference 96, the reference 565 has a case that is 5mm larger, 35mm as opposed to 30mm and it also features a screw down case back, making it Patek's first truly water resistant Calatrava, further enhanced by the two piece case construction. It was one of the first Patek Philippe wristwatches to be part of a series with a stainless steel case. The reference appealed to a public with an increased appetite for outdoor pursuits and certainly met their needs. As referenced in Audemars Piguet 20th Century Complicated Watches, p.277, of the 233, 85 were made in steel, 70 in yellow gold, 43 in two-tone, 26 in platinum, and 9 in pink gold. The current example, executed in platinum, features a stunning Mother of Pearl dial that really has an exceptional colour and hue evoking an almost cloud-like appearance to the dial. To this day Mother-of-Pearl has remained one of the most consistently used and popular materials for watch dials with manufacturers at all levels incorporating the material into their designs. Every Astronaut and Cosmonaut were equipped with an Omega Speedmaster Professional and in the case of Alexey Loenov, two. To celebrate this, in 1976 the Jeweller De Marchi of Turin took delivery of a group of special celebratory Apollo Soyuz watches with the mission badge on the dial and a special embossed case back depicting the Saturn Rocket on a map of the world. The back was also lightly engraved with the limited edition number, an I for Italy and an Ω.The present watch was bought new in 1980 at a large discount when it is possible that the Italian market was a difficult place to sell this particular piece. It was soon inherited by the present owner who left it unused in a draw for many years and only sporadically wearing it. For this reason, the dial is in excellent condition with virtually no UV damage. The circular raised base supported on three bracket feet, in original polish with a waxed patina. It revolves with ease as base is fitted with the rare ball-bearing track. Boxing Broadside. The Great Fight Between Bendigo and Caunt for the Sum of £200 a-side and the Championship of England, on Tuesday, September 9th, 1845, printed by John Howe, Commercial Office, Blanket-Row, Hull, [1845], printed broadside on thin wove paper, depicting a wood engraving (by J. Howe) at head above title and letterpress text giving a first-hand account of the fight, some spotting and heavy brown stains, mostly circles and semi-circles along the vertical centrefold, a few small tears affecting several words of text but largely without loss of sense, a little creasing and marginal fraying, 38.5 x 27 cmQty: (1)Footnote: A rare bare-knuckle boxing broadside detailing one of the many fights between these two legendary giants of the sport. Ben Caunt (1815-1861) stood 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 18 stone, becoming the heavyweight boxing champion known as the 'Torkard Giant' and 'Big Ben'. His opponent was William "Bendigo" Thompson (1811-1880) from Nottingham, who won the heavyweight championship of England from James Burke in 1839. He is credited with introducing the southpaw stance and has been inducted into several boxing Halls of Fame. The two boxers fought three times with Thompson winning through the fights including this one which he won on a foul in 75 rounds. The account of the fight is brutal with both men trading heavy blows throughout, Bendigo eventually being declared the victor a little after 6 o'clock in the evening. No other copies of this broadside have been located; a rare survival.
* HMS Amethyst. A rare Telex of congratulations from King George VI, Admiralty, 31 July 1949, for the Commander in Chief, 'Please convey to the Commanding Officer and Ship's Company of HMS Amethyst my hearty congratulations on their daring exploit to rejoin the fleet, the courage, skill and determination shown by all onboard have my highest commendation. Splice the main brace', a little spotting and toning and a few contemporary paper adhesion remains to front and back, 14 x 18cm, matted in a presentation mount with a printed description mounted beneath, overall 44 x 32.5cmFootnote: The Amethyst Incident, or Yangtze Incident, involved the Royal Naval ships HMS Amethyst, HMS Consort, HMS London and HMS Black Swan during the Chinese Civil War in the summer of 1949. HMS Amethyst was ordered up the Yangtze River to act as a guard ship for the British Embassy in Nanjing when it came under fire from the Communist artillery batteries on the northern bank of the river and while attempting to evade the shelling it ran aground. During the incident 17 members of the crew were killed and 10 wounded, including the captain, Lieutenant Commander Bernard Skinner, who later died. Attempts were made by the other ships to re-float Amethyst but were all forced back by intense shellfire. The crew eventually managed to re-float the ship and establish a truce with the local Communist forces but conditions worsened for the crew with extreme heat and a shortage of rations. In early July, Amethyst slipped its anchor under cover of darkness and travelled downstream to Shanghai, negotiating treacherous sandbanks and some artillery fire. Nevertheless Amethyst reached Shanghai and rejoined the British Far East Fleet. The events of this three month ordeal were well covered by the world's press and this Telex is a rare, and possibly unique, survival.
Hunt (Henry, 1773-1835). British radical speaker and agitator. A group of three satirical broadsides relating to Henry "Orator" Hunt, printed by J.M. Gutch, [Bristol], c. 1812, the first entitled 'Lunatic Escaped', contemporary manuscript insertion 'Hunt the' at head above drop-title, some spotting and slight staining, a few very small closed tears, 43 x 27 cm, laid on a contemporary album leaf, the second entitled 'To the 187 sages of Bristol who have voted for Mr Hunt', signed 'Botherem Bobble' in print at foot, laid on a contemporary paper leaf, tear with loss to left blank margin and some old newspaper print adhesion to right margin not affecting text, 25 x 19.5 cm, the third made up as a theatre broadside, entitled 'Theatre Republique, Talbot Tavern. For the benefit of citizen Hunt ['a Violent Jacobin' inserted in manuscript beneath]. This present evening, Thursday 9th July 1812, and every evening during the election, will be presented a new low comedy called The Banditti', some slight soiling and staining, laid on contemporary paper, 39 x 24 cmQty: (3)Footnote: Henry Hunt was a prosperous farmer who became drawn into radical politics during the Napoleonic wars. His talent for public speaking became noted in the electoral politics of Bristol, where he denounced the complacency of the Whigs and the Tories, and proclaimed himself a supporter of democratic radicalism. In 1819 Hunt was invited by the Patriotic Union Society to be one of the scheduled speakers at a rally in Manchester, which turned into the Peterloo massacre. Hunt was arrested for high treason and sentenced to thirty month's imprisonment. In 1830 he became a member of parliament for Preston and was the first MP to advocate for women's suffrage. All the broadsides are rare with no copies located on Library Hub Discover. University of Bristol Libraries have a manuscript purporting to be that of the theatrical hand-bill included in this lot.
Napoleonic Wars - Privateer Warship. Articles of Agreement between the Owner (Hannibal Curnow Blewett, Merchant of Plymouth, Devon), Commander (John Davey), Officers and Crew of the Private Ship of War, Queenborough, 12 July 1806, 4-page manuscript document on vellum with cloth cross-stitches to lower margins, giving explicit details of the obligations of the owners and crew, together with a detailed breakdown of the distribution of the prize money, the final page signed and sealed by 46 of the crew members, giving their position on ship and details of share, salary and wages, some dust soiling and marks, approx. 60 x 85 cmQty: (1)A rare and detailed document, confirming that a Letter of Marque had been obtained for a private ship of war and that the owners were to pay to fit it out for a two month cruise from Plymouth. According to this Agreement the crew consisted of 4 officers, 5 petty-officers, 29 able seamen, 3 ordinary seamen and 4 others. The owner is liable for the costs of all war-like stores, changes of clothing, sea bedding as well as advance money and wages. The crew agree to comply with orders from the owner or his agent. The details include noting that the first man on board a captured vessel is awarded 5 guineas, the protection of a departing crew on a return prize vessel and how it affects their share of profit, discussions on mutiny and its effect on shares. The 'Queenborough', was a Royal Navy 12-gun cutter, operating 1800-1806. Records show that she was employed on the Channel Station between 1800-01 under Lt Berry and again between 1804-05 when she captured the Vrow Elizabeth. It was one of Blewett's larger vessels, was very successful under John Davey's command and, along with others, took at least 16 ships into Plymouth for appraisal and condemnation. Hannibal Blewett owned several private ships of war, the Betsy and Queenborough, others noted being Happy Return, Hero, John Bull and Caesar. His ships were put up for sale between 1807-09.

Kent & Son, 116, High Holborn, [1805], printed broadside on laid paper, religious propaganda message in larger point sizes printed within a thick rule border surmounted by a woodcut urn with verses titled 'Briton's Hope' and 'The Britannia in a Storm' printed to left and right with a woodcut at head of each column, all within thick woodcut border with printer's name 'R. Edwards, Crane-Court, Fleet-Street' to lower right, a few minor marks and one small tear without loss to blank area within text of right-hand column, 49 x 64 cmQty: (1)Footnote: A rare, religious propaganda broadside issued following the death of Lord Nelson (cost two-pence) which asks the British people to trust in God rather than their human leaders and naval heroes. The message in the central panel reads: 'BRITONS! Your NELSON is dead! Trust not in an Arm of Flesh, but in the Living GOD! What said the brave Nelson, Duncan, Howe? "God hath given us the Victory!" His Arm is not cold in Death, nor shortened that it cannot Save. BRITONS! Fear GOD. Fear SIN. And then Fear Nothing.'

WallarmbrustSpanische Niederlande/flämisch, um 1700. Etwas wurmstichige Fruchtholzsäule (L 102 cm) mit eingelegtem Bolzenlager aus Bein, geschnitzter Volutenzier an der Unterseite und zwei symmetrisch floral gravierten Schlossplatten aus Messing. Auf der Oberseite eine messingumrandete Bohrung zur Fixierung eines Visiers. Am Säulenfuss die noch spätgotisch verzierte eiserne Spannkurbel mit Griffstücken aus Bein. Aufwändiger Spannmechanismus mit Doppelkralle und je drei eisernen Umlenkrollen auf beiden Seiten der Säule, sog. "englische Winde"; Spannschnüre alt, aber kaum original. Vor dem Bogen ein eiserner Spannsteigbügel mit zwei Standfüsschen aus Messing. Nuss fehlt, noch 18 cm lang erhaltene, balusterförmig gedrehte Abzugstange aus Messing. Der Stahlbogen ist 78,8 cm lang, Bogenstärke 1,9 cm, ohne Schmiedemarken, wohl im 18./19. Jh. ergänzte Sehne. Eingedenk der wenigen erhaltenen Originalstücke aus dem späten 15./frühen 16. Jh. besonders rare Spätform, vergleichbar den grossen Zweihandschwertern, deren Handhabung noch bis um 1700 gelehrt wurde. G ca. 11 kg. L ohne Winde 109 cm, mit Winde ca. 115 cm.
WHISKY; two bottles of Jura Whisky and a half bottle of Scotch Whisky with apparent rare label, with a further empty bottle with the same label and a bottle of Single Malt aged 10 years boxed (3). PLEASE NOTE: apparently Messrs Riley & Smith, who designed the label for the two half bottles, were owners of the land from which the distillery sourced their water.
TRI-ANG; a rare Tri-ang Commercial pressed steel child’s pedal Tow Truck, English 1950s, red painted body, replaced cast steering wheel, rear working towing mechanism, balloon wheels missing hubcaps and front bumper and grill, length 124cm. Additional InformationRusting, scuffs and wear throughout, there appear to be some trims which are lacking, the steering wheel and support for the steering wheel and column is not original and the clips to the centre of the wheel hubs are not original.
