George III’s Recovery from Ill Health: a good and rare pearlware vase the baluster shaped body of acanthus leaf form on a waisted foot and rectangular base with re-entrant corners moulded with a half -length profile of the King and on the reverse a profile of King Lear depicted as Uranus with foliage in his hair, decorated in underglaze blue, brown, green and black, circa 1789, 219mm high Illustrated (commemorative commemorate) *On 15th March 1789 a service of thanksgiving was held at St Paul’s Cathedral for King’s recovery for which a number of commemoratives were produced. Most unusually this piece alludes to the King’s madness with the depiction of Shakespeare’s King Lear (who similarly went mad when disposing of his kingdom to two of his three daughters). Most likely and in the absence of any true likeness, Lear is depicted as the mythological Greek God Uranus (the planet having been discovered in 1781 by the astronomer William Hershell (for which he was appointed Court Astronomer by George III). David Garrick had played Lear (depicted with foliage on his head) in his 1756 production. Following the King’s first bout of madness there were no further meaningful productions of the play. Indeed between 1810 and 1820, when the King again lapsed into periods of insanity, the authorities banned any production of the play.
