Most unusually this piece alludes to the King’s madness with the depiction of Shakespeare’s King Lear (who similarly went mad when disposing of his kingdom to two of his three daughters). Most likely and in the absence of any true likeness, Lear is depicted as the mythological Greek God Uranus (the planet having been discovered in 1781 by the astronomer William Hershell (for which he was appointed Court Astronomer by George III). David Garrick had played Lear (depicted with foliage on his head) in his 1756 production. Following the King’s first bout of madness there were no further meaningful productions of the play. Indeed between 1810 and 1820, when the King again lapsed into periods of insanity, the authorities banned any production of the play.
