At the outbreak of the Great War the 19th Hussars were split up as divisional cavalry and on the 19th September 1914 he was appointed GSO1 2nd (Cavalry) Division, recently formed under the command of Hubert Gough.  He remained in this post until April 1915, when he was promoted GOC 9th (Cavalry) Brigade, 1st (Cavalry) Division and from November 1915 until November 1916 he served as Chief of staff for the XIII Corps, commanded by Sir Walter Congreve. This Corps was heavily engaged on the Somme and achieved the greatest success on 1 July, including the capture of Montauban. In November 1916 he was appointed GOC 2nd (Cavalry) Division. In March 1918 he was given command of the 14th Light Division, which would soon feel the full force of the German Spring Offensive. Major-General Greenly handled this difficult situation with energy, ability and calm.  He was confronted with a difficult problem, and succeeded in concentrating and withdrawing the 14th Division from a situation which at one time looked critical. However the strain of his new command appears to have rested heavy upon him and he was consequently relieved of command, suffering 'exhaustion from exposure'. Haig recorded more brutally in his diary that 'Greenly "¦ went off his head with the strain'. After a period of rest he was once again recommended for command, but with the war nearly over he was appointed Chief of the Military Mission to Romania. He resigned his commission in 1920. It is interesting to note that the tin has a paper label for the Hereford Military Exhibition, Shire Hall Hereford, this being his county of his birth.

London. Gill (MacDonald), Wonderground Map of London Town, published by The Westminster Press, circa 1928, colour photolithographic map, old folds, 745 x 930 mm, retaining original colour printed envelope An almost pristine example of this decorative and entertaining pictorial map of London, complete with its original paper envelope. It is rare to find an example in this fine condition. This is the slightly smaller and later edition of Gill's original 1913 map. There is a 1924 edition which is assumed to have been altered to help the promotion of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition that was held at Wembley between April and October of that year. It can be identified by a sign saying:- 'On To Wembley' and an empire lion in the top left hand corner below the man pushing a bus. This example is a slightly later state with a greyhound replacing the lion. Greyhound racing started at Wembley in 1927 so this edition probably dates from 1927 or 1928. The map remains highly stylised and whimsical and was held in great affection by Londoners. It was originally commissioned by The London Underground and was designed to be displayed in tube stations. The intense pictorial content of the map caught the public's imagination and as a result Gill is often credited with creating a resurgence in the genre of decorative map making. Much work and research has been done by Roderick Barron and Bryars & Bryars on the maps of the Underground and the work of Macdonald Gill and I am also grateful to Claire Dobbins book, London Underground Maps: Art, Design and Cartography. Robert Waring Darwin (1766-1848) was a medical doctor and the father of Charles Darwin. "Robert provided the first empirical evidence that small eye movements are made even when people attempt to keep them fixed. This he found during his studies of the afterimages of colored stimuli in which he noticed that while a person tried to fixate a colored circle, a lucid edge appeared on the adjacent white-paper background. He concluded "as by the unsteadiness of the eye a part of the fatigued retina falls on the white paper."" (Burntwood Family History Group). (1)
