Calculating Machine. Herschell Filipowski’s Calculating Machine for Multiplication and Division, c. 1860, composed of a total of fifty-six wooden calculating rods, each rod with printed paper alphabet letter to crown and printed paper cover with ten columns of figures (each with nine rows), contained in orig. fitted mahogany box with drilled rod holes, the front row of eight rods in a removable slim wooden tray, the front with slits to reveal a total of eight columns of numbers on the rods within, small chip to one corner with small loss of wood and small paper loss to right side with loss of row identification numbers ‘1’ and ‘2’, original printed explanation label with example pasted inside lid, Filipowski’s address given as 25 Wilson Street, Finsbury Square, London, hinged lid with clasp, overall 13 x 12 x 8cm. This rare calculating device is based on Napier’s Bones. John Napier devised logarithmic tables in the early seventeenth century and published the results in 1614. In 1617 he published details concerning the use of rectangular rods stamped with numbers to calculate multiplication and division, the physical manifestation of which became known as Napier’s Bones. Herschell “Phillips” Filipowski (1816-1872) was a Hebraist and actuary, born in Virbalis, Lithuania. He arrived in London in 1839 where he taught Jewish boys and became a prolific writer, editing two periodicals and publishing works ranging from books on Hebrew prophecy and studies of the festivals to actuarial tables and anti-logarithms. Well-versed in several languages, he also found time to translate Shakespeare into Hebrew. He appears to have been at various times a printer, specialising in Hebrew type, a school master at the West Metropolitan Jewish School and an occasional lecturer at Sussex Hall. During the late 1850s he worked in Edinburgh as an actuary, returning to London in about 1860, about which time we believe this calculating machine was made. His translation from Latin into English of Napier’s treatise on logarithms was published in 1857. The printed label inside the lid besides giving Filipowski’s address notes that he ‘gives lessons in mathematics and astronomy, also in the German and Oriental languages, at very moderate terms’. One other example of this device has been located in the Science Museum, London. Interestingly, their box is square and, while containing the same number of fifty-six rods, has an additional row for eight rods to leave the removable wooden tray empty. It would seem more than probably, based on Filipowski’s proven talents, that he made the whole device, from typesetting and printing of the paper labels to woodturning, carpentry and assembly. (1).

A very rare example of an early English thoroughbred horse broadside. The main substance of the letterpress concerns the stallions lineage and racing successes. ‘Patriot, 4 years in succession, took the premium at Newmarket, as being allowed, by the Jockey Club to be the best horse in the Kingdom. He has proved himself an excellent stock getter; and is the sire of Miltonia, Mandrain, Rosa, &c. During the time he covered in the North, his stock was sold from 800 to 1000 guineas’. (1).

France : 1849-2010 Serious France collection housed in 8 x Davo high quality second hand hingeless albums currently costing new £992.26 which price would include 2011 supplement which is not present - comprising mint or used very high degree of completion with later mint material randomly checked and apparently consistent unmounted mint from perhaps the mid 1970`s onwards with occasional lapses of the odd used interloper requiring exchange or the odd mint hinged values rather than unmounted mint. Boasting a high degree of completion to mid 2000`s - thereafter more sporadic - but note booklets ranges and miniature sheets too - high face value in modern euro material. Petering out in the last few years to 2010. Especially strong in earlier material - quality average in the early issues as usual but still including high catalogue stamps - but then including many of the `key` high value French items such as banknote fine mint, strong in the scarcer issues such as Le. Havre 1929 overprint mint, Bordeaux 1923 overprint sound used, 1936 Atlantic 10fr air fine used, virtually every page filled by mint issues, mainly good to fine but sometimes occasional faults, 1927 2fr & 5fr air ovpt mint, 1936 50fr air used, 1925 rare Paris Int Phil Exhibition miniature sheet - expo cancel, hinging / aging (£1,600), 1927 Strasbourg M/S cds used, edge mounted (£1,400), 1937 PEXIP sheet, top marginal thin (£450), better dues, 40c with certificate ... + so much more. Stunning original collection which must have cost a fortune to put together - in need of some rationalisation - mint / used swopping for better consistency, improving areas and adding to others. Catalogue value must be significant. Usually we would break this type of collection but it seems like sacrilege to do so. An exceptional opportunity - please call for verbal report or ask for scans / pictures if interested. UK standard shipping, overseas shipping please enquire. (1.000`s)
