Issue with "oil rivers" obliterated and "niger coast" in top margin Issued Stamps 1d. dull blue, 2nd printing, a complete mint sheet (10x6) with blue crayon "33" sheet number at top right, perf 13½-14, except that all stamps in row 2 are perf 12-13 vertically on both sides (except R2/10 at left only), while stamps in column 8 are perf 12-13 horizontally on both sides (except R6/8 at top only), additionally R5/10 is perf 12-13 at right, while R6/3 is perf 12-13 at foot, as a result of the right and bottom margins having been perforated independently. Northern Rhodesia The Mkushi Provisional Postage Due Stamps In July 1953, postal rates within the South African Postal Union were increased. Many post offices in Northern Rhodesia experienced shortages of Postage Due stamps. Owing to a misunderstanding, quantities of 1d. definitive stamps and of the 1953 Rhodes Birth Centenary stamps were overprinted and surcharged. Although unofficially prepared, their usage was subsequently approved by the Postal Authorities 1953 (6 July) envelope from an unknown office to Kapiri Mposhi and redirected to "Mkushi Boma", bearing 1½d. with indistinct c.d.s. and additionally tied by circular-framed "t", and bearing Rhodes Centenary 1d. with type-written "postage/due/1d" (Type 1) in red cancelled by Mkushi c.d.s. for 25 July with another strike at upper left corner, Kapiri Mposhi transit c.d.s. x Transvaal 1877 (June) new printings on stout hard-surfaced paper with smooth colourless gum, fine roulette 15½ to 16, 1d. bright-red block of four from Setting II, [13-22] in the right-hand pane, variety imperforate vertically, the individual stamps therefore fine roulette x imperforate, fresh with part original gum; some split and re-enforced roulettes between, vertical crease at right and a couple of small brown marks on reverse of lower pair, otherwise sound. Zanzibar 1895-96 Issue ½a. to 5r. set of fifteen reprinted in 1897 made for the circulation to U.P.U. members, each handstamped "specimen" diagonally by a Receiving Authority, effectively confirming the fact that this set comes from the special printing. A very rare and possibly unique set. Photo Note: According to Marcus Samuel Zanzibar circulated the 1895-96 "Zanzibar" issue and Provisionals, all without Specimen overprints, on 24 April 1897.
