A VERY RARE OXFORD TL TESTED CHINESE HAN DYNASTY PAINTED POTTERY CAMEL & RIDER, HAN DYNASTY (206BC - 220AD). Many ancient Chinese pottery models of camels are known but these tend to date to the later Tang Dynasty and very rarely have a rider. Pottery models of camels from as early as the Han Dynasty, such as this one, are extremely rare, let alone one with a rider. It is made from a grey pottery that has been "cold painted" in a creamy-white pigment, with pink pigment added on top for the camel. The camel is in the act of walking, head raised a little with mouth open, tail erect. The rider sits upright, hands together across the chest. It is quite large with a height of 39 cm (15.5 inches). With a Thermoluminescence Analysis Report from Oxford Authentication Ltd. confirming the period of manufacture. Provenance: from a Sussex collection.No obvious sign of repair.
A RARE CHINESE EASTERN HAN DYNASTY STONE TOAD MONEY TREE BASE. An extremely rare toad-shaped pedestal, or base, for the legendary coin-shedding “money tree”. The money tree itself would comprise a bronze trunk, or pole, to which were attached finely-cast bronze branches, the leaves of which would depict mythical animals and beings as well as coins. The bronze trunk would be inserted into its base. Although several money tree bases are known to have survived, the bronze trees are usually only found in fragments, although there are a handful of complete examples to be found in Chinese museums. Most known money tree bases are made of moulded pottery and can take various forms, again usually depicting various mythical creatures. Stone money tree bases are much rarer than pottery examples. This particular example is in the form of a toad. It sits with head raised very slightly. There are faint traces of red pigment to the eyes and mouth. In its back is the hole into which was placed the trunk of the money tree.Length 36 cm (14 inches), height 20 cm (8 inches), weight 28.5 kg (63 lbs).Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 – 220).From a Sussex collection, acquired in 1995.For more information about money trees, refer to the British Museum book "Mysteries of Ancient China". The only reference we can find to a stone money tree base, that also happens to be in the form of a toad, is in the 1998 Peoples Fine Arts Publishing House (Beijing) book, "The Great Treasury of Chinese Fine Arts, Sculpture 2, Sculpture of the Qin and Han Dynasties".

A RARE CHINESE NEOLITHIC POTTERY TRIPOD, QIJIA CULTURE. This rare pottery tripod, 'Li' was made some 4,000 years ago. Such tripods are made from quite a coarse unrefined clay, usually quite low-fired, making them particularly fragile and vulnerable to damage; very few intact examples survive. Height 14 cm (5.5 inches). Qijia Culture (c. 2050 - 1700 BC).Provenance: from a Sussex collection.This is a rare surviving example although there are stress fractures in places with possible repairs to the rim edge and ends of the feet. The rim edge has a castellated edge and in places are decorative notched strips of clay applied to the surface.

Central London Railway (The Central Line) interest; a very rare single 2d journey ticket, number 00002 issued on the 30th July 1900, a return 1 1/2d ticket (after 7.20am) numbered 00019, a single 1 1/2d ticket (between 5am and 7.30am) numbered 00034 and a single 2d ticket numbered 62123, from 2nd August 1900 (the first owners first trip on the train). Sold with a letter from the Central London Railway, dated the 7th August 1900, enclosing two tickets which were used and cancelled on the opening day. The Central London Railway (CLR) was first proposed in 1889, Parliamentary approval took three years, and raising money took four more. In April 1896 work started, using the same Greathead shield technology as the City & South London Railway (C&SLR), the first deep tube to open in 1890. The CLR opened on 30 July 1900 as a cross-London route from Shepherd’s Bush to Bank. It was extremely well used from the outset, partly because of the flat fare of two old pence (2d), which inspired the name the ‘Twopenny Tube’. The fact that it appealed to shoppers as well as commuters was also crucial. In 1908, the line was extended west to Wood Lane to serve the White City exhibition site, and four years later was extended eastwards from Bank to Liverpool Street. In 1920, the line was further extended west to Ealing Broadway. (London Transport Museum)

Pritzel 4709. - Außerordentlich selten, Worldcat und KVK verzeichnen lediglich 4 Exemplare (British Library St. Pancras, Universitätsbibliothek J. C. Senckenberg Frankfurt, BSB München, Natural History Museum South Kensington). - Friedrich Heinrich, Freiherr von Kittlitz war Naturforscher (insbesondere auf den Gebieten der Ornithologie und der Botanik) sowie ein außerordentlich begabter Naturmaler. Er nahm in den Jahren zwischen 1826 und 1829 an der Weltumseglung der Russischen Senjawin Expedition unter Litke teil. Die über mehrere Schriften verteilten Auswertungen seiner Forschungen und Entdeckungen erschienen zum Teil erst Jahrzehnte nach Rückkehr der Expedition, weshalb sie von Zeitgenossen oft wenig beachtet blieben. Dies gilt insbesondere für seine Vegetationsansichten. Im Jahr 1844 erschien die umfangreiche Serie "Vierundzwanzig Vegetations-Ansichten von Küstenländern und Inseln des stillen Oceans". In nahezu photographischer Präzision stellt Kittlitz die pflanzliche Diversität und die aus dieser erwachsende Physiognomie des Ganzen einer konkreten Vegetationslandschaft in 24 Radierungen dar. - Kittlitz Vorhaben, im Anschluß an die Vegetationsbilder der Gestade des Nordpazifiks eine umfangreiche und in Zukunft bei Gelegenheit zu erweiternde Serie auch der heimischen Landschaften folgen zu lassen, erschöpfte sich aus Kostengründen und wegen der fehlenden Resonanz des Publikums jedoch in vorliegendem, ganz offenbar nur in sehr niedriger Auflage publiziertem Werk. - Die Textbll. im Blattrand zart gebräunt, etw. fingerfleckig u. knickspurig. Die Radierungen gleichmäßig zart gebräunt, im Rand leicht fleckig, die Ecken etw. bestoßen. Insgesamt wohlerhalten, die Radierungen differenziert in leuchtendem Kolorit Botany - With 4 colored original etchings. Loosely inserted in original wrapper with cover title (with handwritten ownership entry on front cover, somewhat creased and stained, spine with tears and small defects). - Exceptionally rare, Worldcat and KVK only list 4 copies. - F. H. v. Kittlitz was a natural scientist (particularly in the fields of ornithology and botany) and a gifted painter. Between 1826 and 1829 he took part in the expedition of the Russian Senyavin under Litke. The evaluations of his research and discoveries, which are distributed over several writings, appeared in some cases decades after the expedition's return, which is why they often received little attention from contemporaries. - The text ll. slightly browned in the sheet margins, somewhat finger-stained and creased. The etchings evenly slightly browned, a bit stained in the margins, the corners somewhat bumped. Altogether well-preserved copy, the etchings differentiated in bright coloring.

Der französische Chirurg Guillaume de Houppeville (1644-1726) kritisiert hier die bisher zur Heilung verwendeten Mittel und stellt sein Wissen über die Vorgehensweise bei brustchirurgischen Operationen zur Verfügung. De Houppeville beschreibt das wirksamste Verfahren von Fabrice de Hilden und seine eigenes Verfahren der Mastektomie. Seine chirurgischen Erkenntnisse haben etlichen Menschen das Überleben gerettet. Er gilt als einer der ersten und wichtigsten Ärzte, die sich mit Krebs beschäftigten, und ist ein Meilenstein in der Geschichte der Medizin. - Etwas gebräunt und teils wasserrandig. The French surgeon Guillaume de Houppeville (1644-1726) here criticises the means hitherto used to cure the disease and provides his knowledge of the procedure for breast surgery. De Houppeville describes the most effective procedure of Fabrice de Hilden and his own procedure of mastectomy. His surgical insights have saved the survival of many people. He is considered one of the first and most important doctors to deal with cancer and is a milestone in the history of medicine. - Somewhat browned and partly waterstained. Exlibris des Freiherren von Korff. - Colas, 2554. - Monglond, VI, 1146. - Erste Ausgabe, illustriert mit 12 gestochenen und sehr fein kolorierten Tafeln, nach Zeichnungen, die Gottfried Geissler vor Ort angefertigt hat. Sie werden von einem erläuternden Text in deutscher Sprache von Johann Gottfried Richter und der französischen Übersetzung auf der Rückseite von P. Hacault begleitet. Der Maler und Zeichner Johann Geissler ging 1790 nach Russland, um dort Zeichenunterricht zu erteilen. In den Jahren 1793 und 1794 begleitete er den Naturforscher Peter Simon Pallas auf seiner zweiten wissenschaftlichen Expedition nach Südrussland und verbrachte dann einige Jahre mit dem Naturforscher auf der Krim. Nach seiner Rückkehr in seine Heimatstadt Leipzig veröffentlichte er mehrere Bücher über Russland, die mit Zeichnungen illustriert waren, die er dort angefertigt hatte. Der Text wurde von Johann Gottfried Richter verfasst, ebenfalls gebürtiger Leipziger, der 16 Jahre lang als Tutor in Moskau tätig war. In seinen Kommentaren zeigt er eine große Kenntnis der Sitten und Gebräuche sowie eine große Zärtlichkeit gegenüber dem russischen Volk. Ein gutes Exemplar dieses ungewöhnlichen und seltenen Buches. Russia - First edition, illustrated with 12 engraved and very finely coloured plates, based on drawings made on site by Gottfried Geissler. They are accompanied by an explanatory text in German by Johann Gottfried Richter and the French translation on the back by P. Hacault. The painter and draughtsman Johann Geissler went to Russia in 1790 to teach drawing. In 1793 and 1794 he accompanied the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas on his second scientific expedition to southern Russia, and then spent a few years in the Crimea with the naturalist. On his return to his hometown of Leipzig, he published several books on Russia illustrated with drawings he had made there. The text was written by Johann Gottfried Richter, also a native of Leipzig, who was a tutor in Moscow for 16 years. In his commentaries he shows great knowledge of the customs, as well as great tenderness towards the Russian people. - Later half calf with mounted ms. title. - With noble bookplate. - A good copy of this unusual and rare work.
