Perfect centering of barley ear. One of the best examples of Incuse coinage of Metapontion. Good extremely fine. The city of Metapontion was between the first to make coins in Magna Greece, some years after Sybaris. The coins, a lot of specimens, have the same type: the barley ear. Scholars are agree to consider this symbol an emblem of the principle form of economy: the farming. In fact, the ancient sources emphasize prosperity of chora of Metapontion (Strabo VI, 1, 15). Together the barley ear, was associated the name both MEt and META, rarely METAP .

According ancient texts, this area was occupied by indigenous peoples and during the first phase of occupation, relations were peaceful. Only, in second phase, Greeks controlled all othe centres. Considering this origin, we understand because there were a lot of cults in the city and in its chora. Many og those cults are rappresented on coins, accompanied with barley-ear. .
