His mission, of course, failed and Hess was imprisoned at Spandau where he was found hanged in 1987. Very rare A.L.S. written while a prisoner awaiting trial at Nuremberg, 1p. 12mo., July 15, 1946, in German and in pencil to Dr. Alfred Seidl. his legal counsel. In full: 'Dr. Seidl, Please bring me a book about constitutional law. Hess 15.7.46'. Wrinkled with a few marginal tears, else very good. The film was a huge success in Germany, having over 20 million views. He saw action in the field from January to September 1945, was promoted to Second Lieutenant, and received a Unit Citation and two Bronze Battle Stars. The album opens with a 9.5 x 3 in. two-piece photo showing the Berghof and SS barracks just behind it. Opposite it, an edelweiss flower is attached. Lot 815

Fine and quite rare example of the M-209, a portable, mechanical cipher machine used by the U.S. military in World War II. This example, a U.S. Navy model identical to that used by the Army, is 7 in. wide x 3 in. tall (cased), and it represents a brilliant achievement for pre-electronic technology. It used a wheel scheme like that of a telecipher machine, such as the Lorenz cypher or Germany's famous 'Enigma' machine. However, if a codebreaker got hold of two overlapping sequences, he could eventually break the code. By early 1943, German cryptanalysts were already able to read M-209 messages. This example, production date unknown, appears to be in perfect working order and still has a reel of tape fixed to the top cover. Setting screws are all present and apparently operable, paint in excellent condition. The source control stamp is found on the bottom at the top right corner: 'SC2233A'.

Lot 816

SS PODIUM BANNER Rare and very desirable cotton SS podium banner, approx. 30 x 47 in., with two white SS runes sewn onto the center of a black field. A separately-sewn white border is applied to three sides of the banner, and the top edge is folded over and sewn to form a pole pocket allowing the banned to be suspended vertically. The bottom edge of the banner bears properly mounted 2 in. silver fringe that complies with all such SS banners of the period. The thick fabric used in the constuction of this banner differs from the standard barracks flags or trumpet banners, although it is obviously period, and does not glow under UV light. Also exhibits the proper two color stiching method seen in the other type SS Flags and banners. Indisputably authentic and has been checked out by several SS cloth experts. SS STRASSBURG SOCCER TEAM TROPHY A rare and most interesting relic, the 1942 first place Alsace Provincial Championship soccer competition trophy awarded to the SS team from Strassburg (now Strasbourg, France). This incredible trophy stands 11.5 in. tall and 8 in. wide. It displays a wide ring of laurel leaves banded at the bottom, upon which rests a soccer ball bearing a gold-colored mobile swastika. This assemblage rests upon a base of concentric silver rings which in turn is affixed to a black painted metal base. The base bears a silver plate at front with eagle and swastika, engraved: 'GAUMEISTERSCHAFT-ELSASS 1942 1 PLATZ SS-SPORTGEMEINSCHAFT STRASSBURG'. Silver is tarnished a bit, the base scratched, else very good. One of the most unusual SS pieces we've ever seen. The SS Strassburg team was a regional first division team approved by Himmler himself and established in Elsass. Al members were from the SS, and in 1942 they took part in the Tschammerpokal tournament , predecessor to today's German Cup and went as far as the third round. With research information.

'THE VOICE OF ANCESTORS' BY HEINRICH HIMMLER, OWNED BY AN EINSATZGRUPPE LEADER Rare book with an important association: 'Die Stimme der Ahnen' by 'Wulf Sorenson' (Berlin: Nordland Verlag), 1937. 60pp. sm. 8vo., beige cardboard boards. 'Wulf Sorenson' was a pen name widely attributed to Heinrich Himmler, though some believe the writer may have been Fritjof Fischer, owner of the anti-Semitic publishing house. The book is an essay expressing the significance of paganism and racial memory. Written in 1935, it is an incendiary call to action against Jews and a rejection of Judeo-Christian values in general ('...the depraved colored Hebrew rabble...') in favor of a return to the Nordic attitudes and bearing of the pre-Christian, Nordic man. The front flyleaf reads 'War New Year 1942' with a very faded but still legible presentation signature of SS-Obersturmfuhrer LUDWIG TEICHMANN (1909-1947). Teichmann led Eisatzgruppe E in Croatia and later administered police in Serbia. He was tried by a Yugoslav military court with 20 of his fellow murderers and was hanged in Belgrade on Jan. 24, 1947.

BRITISH FASCISTS PIN AND EPHEMERA A fine assemblage of material from the British fascist organizations, includes a rare numbered pin issued to members of the Imperial Fascist League, a British fascist political movement founded by Arnold Leese in 1929 after he broke away from the British Fascists. It included a blackshirted paramilitary arm called the Fascists Legion, modeled after the Italian Fascists. The group espoused antisemitism and the dominance of the 'Aryan race' in a 'Racial Fascist Corporate State', especially after Leese met Nazi Party propagandist Julius Streicher, the virulently racist publisher of Der Stürmer; the group later indirectly received funding from the Nazis. Although it had only between 150 and 500 members at maximum, its public profile was higher than its membership numbers would indicate. The pin is 1 in. in diameter, polished steel with black enameled face, bearing the 'F' emblem and a cross within a flower, surrounded by the motto: 'For King and Country'. The reverse bears a pin and catch, with membership number '36936' and maker's mark from 'Birmingham Medal Co.' Sold with ten pieces of propaganda issued by the Union of Fascists (B.U.F.), a British fascist political party formed in 1932 by Oswald Mosley. Mosley changed its name to the British Union of Fascists and National Socialists in 1936 and, in 1937, to the British Union. In 1939, following the start of the Second World War, the party was proscribed by the British government and in 1940 it was disbanded. The pieces, set in a frame, include 'The Fascist's Motto', 'The Labour-Communist Double-Cross', an anti-BBC text, etc. Overall very good.

Kriegsmarine-issue wristwatch. A manually wound movement wristwatch, with tan web and black buckle strap. Watch displays the original military style dial, bearing the markings 'K.M.' and '592' on the white toned face. Also present is a spider web shaped metal crystal protector secured in place by the wrist strap. This is an incredibly rare vintage 1930s German made watch for the Kriegsmarine, or German Navy. Known as the 'D' service wristwatch of the German Kriegsmarine, officers and sailors used this exact watch during WWII service. The entire watch is 100% original 1930-40’s production, with the exception of the cloth web wristband, apparently a 1960’s NATO production wristband. This watch has a beautiful original brass case with polished nickel silver plate finish, and a stainless-steel screw-back. The 1.25 in. dial is in excellent condition, showing only a few minor stains, but free of other damage. The main face displays the hour-digits, as well as a sub-dial displaying the seconds movement, inset at the six o'clock position. Both are clear and working. The seconds sub-dial, featured at the bottom of the face indicates this is an earlier production model. Luminous paint is present on steel baton hands and the hour indicators. Case is in excellent condition. Reverse of the case features the standard six indent screw back and shows the issue/serial number of '331595' and bears no other markings. During production of these watches, the German government gave contracts and the requirements for military style watches, to various watch companies. They in turn sometimes hired subcontractors to actually produce the watches, resulting in many of them never bearing a maker’s mark. This is one of those subcontract watches. In perfect working order. Overall, very good.

A late model flintlock with exceptionally rare provenance. Federal contract issue U.S. model 1816 flintlock musket, .69 cal., with a round smoothbore browned barrel, length of 42 in., overall 57.5 in. long, bayonet lug mounted to the top. The barrel bears the cartouche 'LS', and 'US', designating the gun inspector as Luther Sage. Additionally stamped with correct 'P' cartouche, other cartouches are present on the stock, including 'LS' on the lower portion, and two additional cartouches on the side of the stock next to the trigger guard seemingly 'C' in a circle, and 'V'. The center of the flat lock plate is stamped 'M.T. WICKHAM' in an arc with 'US' over the top, and marked 'PHILA/1831' at the rear of the side plate behind the flintlock, indicating the musket was a later production of gun manufacturer, Marine T. Wickham in 1831. Wickham who was also a master armorer at Harpers Ferry Arsenal, produced approx. 16,600 of his own production guns between 1822 and 1837. Per our consignor the stock, lock, and barrel were recently inspected by master gunsmith, John Zimmerman in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia who also replaced the missing ram rod. A few minor dings and chips to the wood, with the expected scratches and wear to the metal parts. Overall, very good to fine condition for its age. By 1837 flintlocks were being phased out by the American military as the superior percussion firing system muskets and rifles were being phased in; therefore allowing the soldiers the opportunity to buy their service weapons for only a few dollars when mustering out of the military. This lot is accompanied by the pamphlet: 'Catalogue of the Adams Collection of Arms, Weapons, and Relics of American Wars' (New Jersey: Emmor K. Adams), 1918. 55pp. 8vo. The last few pages of the catalog display some damage, repaired with tape. This particular musket is featured in the catalog as item number 282. The musket was presented to the Adams Collection by Charles A. Fretz of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, stating it was used in the Mexican American War by his uncle, who then bought the musket when he left the military. With such amazing provenance this is quite a rare find, and a wonderful addition to any gun collection.
