Lot 4008

Brandt, Christian Friedrich -- German-Danish War: Düppler Schanzen. 1864. 2 albumen prints joined at center with linen tape as a panorama. 17,5 x 41,5 cm. Mounted to original board (some foxing on verso), with printed title and photographer's name on the mount. This rare and well-preserved photograph was taken after the Prussian attack around the village Düppel (Düppler Schanzen). Like Roger Fenton and Matthew Brady, the photographer C.F. Brandt was confronted with a similar situation when photographing war; photographs could only be taken after the fighting had ended because exposure times were still long. Brandt was an experienced photographer and he participated in the International Photography Exhibition in Berlin in 1865 and was awarded a medal for his exceptional landscapes. – A few light spots/ surface scuff marks, otherwise strong prints in very good condition.

Lot 4050

Naval History -- Two souvenir albums of Corvetten Capitain Adolph Wilhelm Berger (1829-1898). 1866/1880s. First album (1866) with circa 173 mounted albumen prints. Various sizes, including 161 cdv size, 5 cabinet card size and 7 circa 20 x 27 cm albumen prints (each annotated with full name, military rank and date), mounted to album pages (buckled, slightly soiled/time-stained in edges), bound in modern half leather album with gilt-stamped title Corvetten Capitain Berger 1866, front fly leaf signed and dated by Adolph Berger in ink. Second album (1880s) with circa 92 albumen prints, most cdv, including 7 cabinet portraits, inserted in gilt-edged window album mats, most annotated in pencil below image on the mount, hand-painted dedication title page, full leather album with silver maritime ornaments on front cover, with clasp. These comprehensive albums are comprised of many portraits of Naval officers and large group portraits of ship crews on deck of SMS Niobe and the ironclad warship Hansa. These photographs from the 1860s-1880s are extremely rare documents of German naval history. German photos of this kind were rare even then and only a few have survived. The albums offered here include nearly every officer and official who held rank in the Prussian and Imperial Navy. They are all connected in some way with Adolph Berger's career as an officer. Of particular interest is a portrait photograph of James Madison Adams (1826-1870). Adams was a Chief Engineer in the US Navy and came to Kiel in 1866 on the USS "Augusta." The USS "Augusta" was one of two escort ships of the monitor USS "Miantonomoh" built for the United States Navy while the American Civil War was still in progress. After the end of the Civil War, US President Andrew Johnson sent the ship on a voyage across the North Atlantic in May 1866 to conduct a "showing the flag mission" in Europe. The spectacular armored ship was a great sensation wherever it appeared. Coming from St. Petersburg, the USS "Augusta" and the USS "Miantonomoh" entered the harbor of Kiel on 29.09.1866, where among others the photo of James M. Adams was taken. The portraits of English officers of the S.M.S. "Black Prince" in one of the albums are also rare and interesting. A very extensive documentation and list of names is included with the albums. For a more detailed biography of Adolph Berger, see previous lot 4049. – Some photos faded, some photos cut out, a few with light spots, otherwise most in good condition.

Some press photos, like this and the previous photo were sent to Paris at the time to promote the Berlin event there as well. The album is dedicated by the producer Erich Pommer to the composer of the film music Werner Richard Heymann. In this very good condition, it is an exquisite and rare piece of German film history. – Some photos slightly faded, especially at beginning of album, some photos with mirroring in edges, otherwise most in very good condition.Provenance: From the estate of Werner Richard Heymann.

Riefenstahl, Leni -- Film set photos taken during the filming of "Tiefland". Circa 1944. 53 vintage gelatin silver prints. Various sizes, between 18 x 10 cm, 10 x 14 cm and 9 x 6 cm. Mounted to album pages, bound in contemporary canvas album with cord binding (slight traces of use)."Tiefland" was shot, directed, acted in and edited by Leni Riefenstahl. The film was produced by Leni Riefenstahl and Josef Plesner. It was based on the opera "Tiefland" and the play "Terra baixa" by Àngel Guimerà. Shooting took place in 1940-44, but was not completed until after the end of World War II, and the film was finally released on February 11, 1954. After the war, Leni Riefenstahl was accused of recruiting 48 extras from the Maxglan "gypsy camp" who, after they were no longer needed, were deported to Auschwitz, where more than 20 of them were murdered. The filmmaker Nina Gladitz produced an extensive television documentary on this subject in 1982, which L. Riefenstahl tried to prevent unsuccessfuly by legal means. The album offered here is an enormously important and rare document, since very few portraits of the "Gypsy extras" are known. – Many photos buckled from glue mounting, otherwise most in good to very good condition.Lit.: Nina Gladitz. Leni Riefenstahl, Karriere einer Täterin, Zurich, 2020.

NETSUKE EN BOIS REPRÉSENTANT ASHINAGA ET TENAGAFin du XVIIIe siècle A WOOD NETSUKE OF ASHINAGA AND TENAGALate 18th centuryAshinaga supporting Tenaga on his back, Tenaga, reaching down to grab a struggling octopus with his left hand; signed So[...]. 9.1cm (3 9/16in) high.Footnotes:木彫根付 足長手長 銘「藻[...]」 18世紀後期Provenance:Sold at Aguttes & Laurent, Clermont-Ferrand, 13 May 1982, lot 75.Purchased from Josette Schulmann, January 1985.A rare and intriguingly signed netsuke whose signature has provoked endless speculation and debate, it has previously been attributed to Mataemon. Very few examples allegedly signed by Mataemon are however known, one formerly with Max Rutherston (catalogued as signed with a cipher, rutherston.com/stock-portfolio/wood-hero-netsuke-mr1923/). Another two illustrated by Sydney L. Moss, OHYB, pp.274-279, nos.36-37. The two characters for the two Sydney Moss examples were read as 'Matain', which does not match the signature on this present lot, although the carving style is remarkably similar and of comparable quality. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

NETSUKE EN BOIS REPRÉSENTANT FUTENPar Unjudo-in Shidemaru, fin du XVIIIe siècleA WOOD NETSUKE OF FUTENBy Unjudoin Shidemaru, late 18th centuryFuten the God of Wind emerging from a long conical cloud of vapour, baring his teeth in an open grin, revealing a loose ball within, the eyes inlaid; signed Shidemaru. 9.6cm (3¾in) high.Footnotes:木彫根付 風天 銘「幣丸」 18世紀後期Provenance:Purchased from Bernard Fournier, December 1985.Exhibited and Published:NS19, p.61, no.94.Only a handful of very similar (but not identical) versions of this very rare netsuke are known. Over the years, the readings of their signatures have ranged from (Shu)memaru to Hidemaru, Heimaru, and Heigan, but we prefer to attribute the carving to Shidemaru, a more plausible interpretation since shide and maru are kun-yomi (Japanese readings) of the characters in the name as listed in Soken Kisho, vol.7, p.13. Our reading is consistent with the opinion of Nori Watanabe, former president of the Nihon Netsuke Kenkyukai (Japan Netsuke Society), who concluded that Shumemaru, as given in Soken Kisho, was most likely a corrupted form of Shidemaru. The aforementioned variants including a similar example signed Heihi, are recorded by G. Lazarnick, NIA, pp.454-455 and F. Meinertzhagen, MCI, p.132. Another example, catalogued as by Unjudo Shumemaru, is published by Mikhail V. Uspensky, Netsuke in the Collection of the State Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, Slavia Art Books, 1994, p.199. For another identified as by Shumemaru accompanied by an in-depth discussion of the signature reading and artist, see Sydney L. Moss, MRMT, no.10 (also illustrated on the front cover). For one last example, see R. Bushell, NFU, p.225, no.750.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

According to notes from a previous owner, the exhibition featured in a write-up in The Times, which highlighted two works Catkins and Pussywillows (the present work) as of 'exceptional quality.' Much of Nevinson’s inspiration was from his wife, Kathleen, who was a professional gardener and Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society. The Divino Estimulo del Amor de Dios (Divine Stimulus of God’s Love) is then offered as a more extensive example of the application of rhyme and meter. The final part of the book has a glossary of rhyming words to be used in writing poetry with the silva meter.

The complete top line reads: 'The King and Earle of Feversham'. It appears that the card was incorrectly captioned, with the writer confusing the Earl of Feversham (who whilst involved with James II was not present at the king's attempted escape to France) with the town of Faversham in Kent, where James was held after his escape was thwarted by local fishermen. This pack is therefore possibly unique in retaining the original wording on this card, where most other examples have been 'corrected' (a photocopy of a typical 'corrected' 2 of hearts is included for comparison).

SEX PISTOLS POSTER - A Rare survivor from the Roadie who was at the Gig and a friend of Martin who was the band member of the support act on the night, Albert Dock. This Sex Pistols Poster is an original 1976 Handbill / Poster and an extremely rare piece of original early Sex Pistols Promotional Material. It was for the show at Eric’s in Liverpool, England on October 15, 1976.The poster is in good condition for its age. It has a small piece missing on the top right of the poster and a small side tear and a little light creasing. Its quite a deep yellow paper with crisp black print. The two figures standing on the rock are John Campbell and Henry Priestman, both member’s of Yachts, and later, It’s Immaterial, and Henry Priestman from The Christians. Martin a member of Albert Dock took the photograph on an art college trip to the Lake District and passed the negative on for the poster production. `The item measures just short of A4 at 295mm x 208mm and it served as both poster and handbill for the gig promotion, the Sex Pistols’ first outing to Liverpool. At that time at Erics, the main act performed upstairs early on in the evening and the support act played downstairs in what would later become the main club area.`This performance came at a pivotal time for the Pistols.  Less than a month before, they’d signed a five year management contract with Malcolm McLaren’s Glitterbest Ltd.  Three weeks prior to this show, Nick Mobbs of EMI saw the band for the first time, and on October 8, just a week before the Eric’s show, the group officially signed to the label. On October 10 the band recorded an early version of “Anarchy in the UK” with their sound man, Dave Goodman, and beginning on the 12th, they played shows in Dundee, Wolverhampton, and Birkenhead before the Liverpool show on October 15.  The Liverpool Echo noted “This gig certainly didn’t have the same impact as the Pistol’s Free Trade Hall gigs in Manchester – in fact it almost went unnoticed as there were only about 50 people there…Eric’s had only just opened on 1 October, and among the first bands to play were the Runaways and the Stranglers. But on 15 October, the infamous Sex Pistols pogo’ed their way into town…Holly Johnston, Paul Rutherford [both later of Frankie Goes to Hollywood], and Pete Burns [Dead or Alive] were all in attendance that night.”Just two days after the Eric’s show, the Pistols recorded the version of “Anarchy in the UK” that EMI released.  Five days later, on October 22, Stiff records released The Damned’s “New Rose”, the first-ever UK punk record, beating the Pistols debut single by about a month.Provenance from Richard, a college friend of Martin Watson, Guitarist and Vocals for Albert Dock and later Yachts and who was the roadie for the night. As he states to ensure admission to the gig I was the roadie for Albert Dock ! The other poster is a rare Albert Dock - Return of the Magnificent 7 Poster in fair condition.
