Henry VIII, First Coinage, Groat, 2.93g, Tournai, m.m. crowned t on both sides, obv., profile bust of Henry VII, henric’ di’ gra’ rex franc z aglie, saltire stops, rev., long cross fourchée over shield, civi/tas/torn/acen’, double saltire stops (N. -; S. 2317; Whitton -; Stewartby p. 437), slightly short of flan at upper edge, very fine and clear, very rare. The siege and capture of Tournai in September 1513 marked the end of Henry’s military campaign in France. The city was returned to France following the Treaty of London in 1518, by which time a number of groats, as well as French gros in Henry’s name, had been issued.

WALTER SICKERT, ARA (1860-1942) PORTRAIT OF JOHN ADDISON Inscribed with title l.c.:?John Addison Inscribed and dated (verso): Meisseurs Harrisons Printers, 45 St Martin's Lane, London/by R.Sickert/1890/for The Whirlwind, Pen and black ink, 19.5cm; 7 3/4 in (diameter) Sickert produced character sketches, reviews and art criticism for a periodical called The Whirlwind from August to December 1890. His lack of commitment and general unreliability forced him to relinquish his position there after only a few months. Portrait vignettes, like the present work, were drawn to break up the text within the periodical's columns and remain rare examples of some of Sickert's only graphic work in this vein. This drawing depicts John Addison who was a well-known Liberal MP of the period. Provenance Produced as an illustration for The Whirlwind magazine, 1890

A rare and unusual late 19th early 20th Century mahogany gentleman's wash stand With a sliding and tilting shaving mirror above a white marble top and a plain beaded frieze, supported on two tapering ring turned and channeled supports over a second white marble slab , two cockbeaded drawers and a hinged cupboard door with a brass knob handle, raised on four vase shaped supports and brass castors, lacking one brass castor. 45x111cms with the mirror down x 37cms. Certain sections lavishly decorated with colourful Islamic stylised motifs and borders. Bound in original covers, hand painted in red with floral panels to the front and back. Hand painted. From the Gifford ' George ' Stansfield Broun collection (the majority of which was sold in our Militaria sale on Feb 26th this year). A gentleman from a wealthy background who travelled around Africa in the early 20th century (c 1905 - 1920) and travelled through Africa at the outbreak of the First World War WWI, taking his private journals and photograph albums with him. This is from his personal collection at that time. Rare.
