Ned Kelly The Ironclad Australian Bushranger (1887) 2-38 last issue, by J.S. Borlase. With tooled, loose front cover and comics frontispiece. Edward "Ned" Kelly (1855-1880) was an Australian bushranger of Irish descent. The third of eight children he was born in the British colony of Victoria and became the family breadwinner at the age of 12 after his father died in jail for horse-stealing. Ned was in and out of prison and when his mother Ellen was arrested for the attempted murder of a policeman, a subsequent brawl saw the brothers Ned and Dan flee to the bush. From their impenetrable hideout the Kelly Gang, now four strong, shot 3 policemen and carried out a series of robberies. The government of Victoria proclaimed them outlaws under the Felons Apprehension Act giving anyone the right to shoot them on sight. This led them to make home-made suits of metal armour for protection whilst establishing the legendary band as heroes of the oppressed. When the gang's attempt to derail and ambush a police train failed all were killed except Kelly who was severely wounded and captured. Despite support for his reprieve he was tried, sentenced and hanged in Melbourne Gaol on 11 November 1880 aged 25. Whilst issue 1 is missing this is the most complete 1887 Ned Kelly set ever to be offered at auction. The 37 issues are retrieved from a bound volume from which the tooled cover and frontispiece are also offered here. There are some loose pages, edge wear and binding tears not affecting the stories or illustrations. Rare.[vg/vg+] (39)
