The current example is offered on behalf of the family of the original owner who was a diver in the Royal Navy. As these watches were 'tool watches' in the truest sense of the word, they were often repaired with service parts and in many cases heavily damaged during their years of use. This is evident with the current lot which has undergone servicing and maintenance in its lifetime. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

However, the Royal Oak soon became the life saver and keystone for Audemars Piguet, and furthermore revolutionized the industry with the new notion of 'high-end sport watch'.The first Royal Oak was given the reference 5402 and was produced in four series - A, B, C and D. Initially 1000 'A' series pieces were produced and in a little over a year were all sold before being followed up by a further 1000 pieces. Shortly after this they moved onto the 'B' series, of which the current lot is an example, and it is believed there were again only around 2000 pieces made. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com Movement: Runs when powered, benefits from a recent service Dial: Good, very minor mark to the baton at 11 but only really noticeable with a loupeHands: Good Glass: GoodCase: Surface scratches throughout, more prominent scratches to the bezel and lugs, repolished at some point Strap/Bracelet: Surface scratches throughout, likely repolished, measures approximately 190mmBuckle/Clasp: Light surface scratches We do not test any watches for their accuracy and as such timekeeping cannot be guaranteed. We advise that if you are bidding on a watch, that you or your agents are completely satisfied with the condition of the lot. These dials take a little getting used to as 12 midday with a casual glance would read 6 o'clock on a conventional watch. Another unusual feature is the asymmetric dial with the larger minute recording subdial completing the quirky nature and look of this watch. It is believed that less 1000 of these were ever made. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
