DUNDEE - A RARE SCOTTISH PROVINCIAL SNUFF BOX JOHN STEVEN marked IS, script M, pot of lilies, S, of simple oval form with recessed rim, the hinged cover set with polished panel of mother of pearl 65mm wide

Lot 271

GLASGOW - A RARE SCOTTISH PROVINCIAL TABLESPOON BY TB (MAKER UNRECORDED) marked TB, Glasgow town mark, O, of early Old English pattern with script initial R to terminal 21.5cm long, 56.8g Note: This previously unrecorded Glasgow maker's mark appears to date to the middle of the 18th century and bears the pseudo date letter O which is most commonly associated with the period 1757 - 1780. The initials could relate to either Thomas Barr or Thomas Bisbrown but both these men are only recorded as Journeymen so would not have had their own mark. The only Freeman of Glasgow whose initials fit are those of Thomas Brydson who was made free in 1779 and only worked for four years. While it is a tentative attribution, Brydson seems the most likely maker of this piece.

Lot 273

GLASGOW - A SCOTTISH PROVINCIAL MUG ADAM GRAHAM marked AG, town mark, AG, of bold baluster form with everted rim with original engraved initials D / KC, the body raised on a stepped foot, with large acanthus capped S scroll handle 8.8cm high, 6.3oz Note: The handle to this mug is very recognisable as a Glasgow style. While it is not unique to Glasgow it must be considered a Glasgow fashion and would for example be considered very rare if encountered in Edinburgh.

Lot 326

TAIN - A RARE SCOTTISH PROVINCIAL TABLESPOON HUGH ROSS marked HR (conjoined in shaped punch), St Duthac flanked by S D, Script P twice, of Hanoverian pattern with original script initial 'DMK / HMcC' 21.4cm long, 65.3g

Lot 410

A GEORGE II TABLESPOON KERR & DEMPSTER, ASSAY MASTER HUGH GORDON, 1753 of Hanoverian pattern, Hopetoun House crest to reverse of terminal 20cm long, 2.3oz Note: Engraved with the crest and motto for Hope of a broken terrestrial globe beneath a cloud-issuing rainbow with the motto 'At Spes Infracta'; (Yet my hope is unbroken). Likely for John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun (1704 - 1781). For two generations The Hopetoun family, Charles and John Hope 1st and 2nd Earls, were perhaps the most important commissioners of silver in Scotland. Their influence on the Edinburgh trade appears to have not only to have given many valuable and important commissions, but to have encouraged the the goldsmiths to new heights, resulting in truly fashionable and important items. As with all family commissions, the success of the family closely directly relates to the commissions and need for silver. The boom in commissions seems to have occurred from 1699 when the architect William Bruce was commissioned by Margaret Hope, Charles's mother, to create Hopetoun House, built in its original form between 1699 and 1702. This original Bruce building has been much changed by later work with the William Adam rebuild of 1721. Flatware bearing the armorial/ crest is surprisingly rare. It is unknown how large the original services of flatware within Hopetoun House were. Oddly, these pieces do not seem to have survived, and it is predominantly larger important pieces which are still recorded. It is highly likely these smaller items were regularly recycled into larger impressive wares and while obviously made in large numbers, few survive.

Lot 450

A RARE NOVELTY COW HORN SNUFF MULL UNMARKED the polished cow horn body with carved elephant head terminal, with bone in set eyes and tusks, the silver collar engraved '1822 From James Watt to Robert Inglis Singer Glasgow', with hinged polished horn cover 10cm long Note: Mr. James Watt named here could possibly be Mr. James Watt Junior (5 February 1769 – 2 June 1848), son of the Scottish inventor. This is further strengthened as the crest of the Watt family includes elephants. Crest: Upon a fer de moline fessways Or, an elephant statant Proper charged on the body with a cross moline gold (for Watt). Upon a key fesseways wards downwards Azure a pelican in her piety Or wings addorsed Azure semee of crescents Argent.

Lot 462

AN IMPORTANT JACOBITE SOCIETY OF SEA SERGEANTS' RING 18TH CENTURY the oval hardstone carved with a dolphin / sea serpent with sun radiating from behind, collet set within an oval setting, the shank with deeply cast shoulders with a butterfly and rose to both sides, the shank engraved Success to the Society Intaglio 7mm x 9mm Literature: Kelvin, M. (2003). The Jacobite Legacy. 1st ed. Wigtown: G C Book Publishers Ltd, p.136 (39) Note: The Jacobite Society of Sea Sergeants was based in West and South Wales. They convened once a year at a seaside location, often for a week at a time, and unlike some societies did have women present at meetings. The emblem and motto of the society can also be found on rare glassware (see The Jacobites and their Drinking Glasses, G. B. Seddon pp. 68 - 69, plate 7.). Since it is the only recorded example of fine quality, it would seem highly unlikely it was a standard piece owned or worn by all members. This perhaps suggest that this was worn by the chairman of the society.

Lot 467

AN UNUSUAL JACOBITE SNUFF BOX the blue agate base and cover set in an engine turned gilt metal frame, the hinged cover opening to reveal an engraved motto 'Awa Whigs Awa' 67mm across Literature: Kelvin, M. (2003). The Jacobite Legacy. 1st ed. Wigtown: G C Book Publishers Ltd, p.148 (48) Note: The Jacobite motto 'Awa Whigs Awa' was a popular and long enduring one. It is seen on various items of Jacobite support including seals and rings; however it is rare to see on larger items such a this. For a fine ring bearing this inscription previously in the Thriepland of Fingask collection see 'Jacobite, Stuart & Scottish Applied Arts' Lyon & Turnbull 13th May 2015 lot 2

Lot 469

A HIDDEN PORTRAIT JACOBITE ENAMEL SNUFF BOX MID-18TH CENTURY the circular box with enamel tartan decoration, the hinged cover opens to reveal a plain interior, the hidden double lid opens to reveal a finely enamelled portrait of Prince Charles Edward Stuart in tartan jacket with orders of The Garter and Thistle decorations, white cockade and blue bonnet 73mm across Provenance: The Scottish Sale, Bonham's Edinburgh 24th - 26th August 2005 lot 746 Note: Hidden portrait snuff boxes such as this are amongst the most iconic Jacobite works of art. While they are a well recorded type, they are rare in any form. This example is in particularly good condition and finely enamelled. The portrait is a variant of the famous Sir Robert Strange example which likely date this piece to circa 1750. For a similar example but with a pasted engraved print on the interior of lid see Lyon & Turnbull 'Scottish Silver & Applied Art' 17th August 2016, lot 496 (sold for £10,000 hammer).

Lot 470

A RARE RELIQUARY PENDANT FOR KING JAMES II the silver heart-shaped pendant with pull-off cover, the obverse engraved with initial IR with crown above and heart below, within circular cartouche, the border with oak leaf border, the reverse engraved 'IHS' within oak leaf border, the interior with fragment of what is believed to be a section of King James' pericardium 30mm including bale x 33mm Note: Reliquary pendants are more regularly for King Charles I after his beheading in 1649 and are seen in similar form with much the same motifs and iconography. Some rarer examples do feature engraved portraits of King Charles of memento mori motif, such as skulls. While the relic inside the pendant is now almost perished it is considered that due to iconography on the obverse showing the heart under the initials for King James that this could be what it held. While it would not have been flesh of the actual heart itself it would more likely have been a section of pericardium - the fibrous membrane which encloses the heart. This would not be unusual as another reliquary containing a portion of James' pericardium is known at Chiddingstone Castle, Kent.

Lot 474

A RARE DOUBLE-PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF JAMES III AND MARIA CLEMENTINA SOBIESKI the oval portrait miniature on ivory set within gold frame with crown surmount and hessonite garnets set around, in a later fitted leather case 47mm long (including suspender) Provenance: John Creyke, c1690 - 1757, Marton Hall Yorkshire His sons Ralph Creyke, Rawcliffe Hall Yorkshire By direct descent Lawrence's of Crewkerne 12th October 2010 Private Collection Note: The Creyke family heritage appears to stem from Danish routes although they are recorded settled and holding the title of Governor in Berwick under the reign of Edward III in 1340. The family seem to have been spread along the borders of Scotland, York and wider afield in Yorkshire. By the time of the Stuart uprisings their seat was, and had been since 1447, Marton Hall in East Riding. However their connection to the Stuart cause goes much further back than the 18th century and they are recorded supporting and indeed suffering for their support upon the execution King Charles I. At this time the family patriarch was Gregory Crekye (born 1595) and it is recorded that for his support he 'suffered greatly for his devoted attachment to Charles I, and compounded heavily for his estates'. Two of Gregory's sons were also close adherents of the Stuarts. One being page to Queen Henrietta Maria and his eldest son Richard was commissioned by the Duke of Newcastle to guard the East Riding coast against the coming of William of Orange to over throw the Stuart King James II. In fact, it was Richard who personally delivered the fateful news to King James of William's arrival. Setting in motion the Glorious Revolution and overthrow of the Stuart monarchy which would in turn create their supporters, the Jacobite's. It is either this Richard Creyke or his son Reverend John Creyke who must be considered the original owners of these fine miniatures. In either case they were staunch Jacobite's who as the miniature of King James suggest could have been given this directly for their long and well recorded support. Of course it was not only this past support but the need for future support through the uprisings of the 18th century which the Stuarts hoped to guarantee. The Creyke support is seen early in the century with Reverend John who after the Jacobite defeat at Preston was so despondent by this defeat he refused on the 6th May 1718 to take the Oath of Allegiance to King George I. By doing so he had to resign from St. John College Cambridge. Almost immediately he appears to have taken refuge not at the family seat but under the care of the 5th Earl of Winchelsea, Heneage Fincha. So close was their relationship he stayed there as his chaplain and librarian until his death in 1757. This support was not only known locally but obviously met the ear of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, indeed he and Creyke may have had a more personal connection than is now understood. It is stated in an 1802 edition of Old Yorkshire that Prince Charles promised to Reverend Creyke that should he come to the throne that he would be granted the position as Archbishop of York. This obvious close connection tempts even further that these miniatures could in fact have been direct court gifts. It should also be said in case any doubt is still cast on the Reverend John Creyke's Jacobite credentials it is recorded that not only was he present to witness the deaths of the Manchester Regiment soldiers so brutally dealt with for their 'crime' of taking arms for the Jacobite's. But he also wrote the speeches given on the gallows by two of their soldiers. These speeches were written for Thomas Syddall and Thomas Deacon of Manchester. It therefore seems highly likely he would have been present at Southwark Gaol to comfort and consult with other prisoners and likely gave religious clemency to many. It would appear that these remarkable miniatures not only have a connection to a remarkable, and little known, Jacobite family but for their near 300 year existence have only been in the possession of two Jacobites, the Creyke family and one Private Collector.
