Pieter Stevens, Hendrik Hondius - Times of the day - complete series (4) / Description: The complete series in outstanding impressions: Aurora, Meridies, Hesperus and Nox. Ref: New Hollstein. p. 87, 76-79. These fine prints in impressive format were engraved by Hendrik Hondius, an engraver with Flemish roots working in Amsterdam. The designes are by Peter Stevens II (1567 – 1626) . a Flemish painter and draughtsman born in Mechelen know for his landscapes. He left Flanders to work for the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. The circulation of prints made after the series of romantic Bohemian landscape drawings by Stevens had an important influence on the development of Flemish and Dutch landscape art in the 17th century. / Dimensions: 23,60 x 33,40 cm / Condition: Outstanding impressions with nice plate tone and still some blur in the plate borders, printed on watermarked laid paper. Francis receiving a palm from Child Jesus / Description: A very rare first state only known from one impression: Saint Francis of Assisi receiving a palm from the hands of the child Jesus. Hieronymus Wierix (1553-1619) after Denys Calvaert (Antwerp 1540-1619, working in Italy). ;Alvin mentions that only one copy is known to be in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, but that this print could not be found in their collection. Maquoy Hendrickx does not know any print in this first state and therefore only mentions Alvin's reference. Our print bears the collection marks of Duke D'Arenberg (oval collection stamp = L.567, ) and Antwerp hand (L.2794 anonymous Belgian collection from the middle of the 19th century) so this is most probably not the one that was in the MET but the second one known, the only one still traced. In the second state there was a cartouche at the bottom with text and signature of the publisher/engraver. Here this text is written in gold ink. So it is very close to the creation of the work. A larger important print from the uppermost rarity. / Dimensions: 29,20 x 19,00 CM / Condition: A good early impression trimmed outside the image borderline, just inside bottom left. Sein bekanntestes Werk "Commentarii de Iure civili" ist einer der ersten Versuche, das Thema des römischen Rechts in einer logischen Reihenfolge abzuhandeln, statt sie an der Abfolge der Bücher und Titel der iustinianischen Gesetzgebung zu orientieren. In diesem epochalen Werk löste er etliche Widersprüche, auf die er in den römischen Quellen der Digesten, Institutionen und des Codex stieß. Im Interesse des Bildungsanspruchs löste er sie häufig kurzerhand im Rahmen genereller Dogmen auf, da ihm an einem rechtlichen System höchstmöglicher Allgemeingültigkeit gelegen. He also worked as an interpreter at the Dutch Embassy in Beijing (1794-1795) under the direction of Titsingh and Van Braam. His impressive travelogue tells of his experiences in China, with illustrations based on sketches he made on the spot. De Guignes' narrative offers an interesting and personal perspective on the embassy in Beijing. - He was the son of the distinguished sinologist Joseph de Guignes and correspondent of the Académie des Sciences and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Im Gegensatz zu vielen seiner Zeitgenossen ergänzte Agricola diese Schriften durch eigene Beobachtungen und stellte die Existenz einiger der von seinen Vorgängern beschriebenen Phantasietiere in Frage. Von besonderem Interesse für Paläontologen und Zoologen ist ein Index am Ende des Buches, in dem Agricola die Tiere nach ihrer Fortbewegungsart gruppiert und gelegentlich auch Binome verwendet, womit er in die Fußstapfen einiger zeitgenössischer Kräuterkundler tritt. - Agricola studierte von 1518 bis 1522 Medizin und Chemie in Bologna, Venedig und Padua. Anschließend unterrichtete er klassische Philologie an der Städtischen Schule in Zwickau, Sachsen. Im Jahr 1527 zog er nach Joachimsthal in der Tschechoslowakei, wo er eine Arztpraxis eröffnete. Hier, wo der Bergbau in der Umgebung sein tägliches Leben beeinflusste, begann Agricola, Bergbautechniken und Mineralogie zu studieren. Nach einer Ernennung zum offiziellen Historiker des Fürstentums Sachsen im Jahr 1533, die mit einem jährlichen Stipendium verbunden war, zog Agricola erneut um. Er verlegte seine Arztpraxis nach Chemnitz in Sachsen. Dort engagierte er sich in der Bürgerschaft, was dazu führte, dass er mehrmals zum Bürgermeister der Stadt gewählt wurde. Agricola war einer der herausragenden Wissenschaftler seiner Zeit. De Animantibus subterraneis liber ... - Agricola's short treatise "De Animantibus" on the animals found in the subsurface, first published in 1549, is a compendium of what Greek, Latin and medieval authorities wrote about these animals. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Agricola supplemented these writings with his own observations and questioned the existence of some of the imaginary animals described by his predecessors. Of particular interest to palaeontologists and zoologists is an index at the end of the book in which Agricola groups the animals according to their mode of locomotion and occasionally uses binomials, thus following in the footsteps of some contemporary herbalists. - Agricola studied medicine and chemistry in Bologna, Venice and Padua from 1518 to 1522. He then taught classical philology at the city school in Zwickau, Saxony. In 1527 he moved to Jáchymov in Czechoslovakia, where he opened a medical practice. Here, where mining in the area influenced his daily life, Agricola began to study mining techniques and mineralogy. There he became involved in civic affairs, which led to his being elected mayor of the city several times. Agricola was one of the outstanding scientists of his time. With alphabetical index of the streets in romanized form as well as Chinese characters. - The explanatory brochure by Frank Dorns briefly describes the history of the city, lists the different dynasties of China since ca. 3000 B.C. and gives short descriptions of individual sights of the places mentioned on the map. - Paper conditionally lightly and evenly browned, a few p. somewhat stronger, several p. concerning punctual pressure mark, in the marginal area partly somewhat creased. Sie werden von einem erläuternden Text in deutscher Sprache von Johann Gottfried Richter und der französischen Übersetzung auf der Rückseite von P. Hacault begleitet. Der Maler und Zeichner Johann Geissler ging 1790 nach Russland, um dort Zeichenunterricht zu erteilen. In den Jahren 1793 und 1794 begleitete er den Naturforscher Peter Simon Pallas auf seiner zweiten wissenschaftlichen Expedition nach Südrussland und verbrachte dann einige Jahre mit dem Naturforscher auf der Krim. Nach seiner Rückkehr in seine Heimatstadt Leipzig veröffentlichte er mehrere Bücher über Russland, die mit Zeichnungen illustriert waren, die er dort angefertigt hatte. Der Text wurde von Johann Gottfried Richter verfasst, ebenfalls gebürtiger Leipziger, der 16 Jahre lang als Tutor in Moskau tätig war. In seinen Kommentaren zeigt er eine große Kenntnis der Sitten und Gebräuche sowie eine große Zärtlichkeit gegenüber dem russischen Volk. Ein gutes Exemplar dieses ungewöhnlichen und seltenen Buches. Russia - First edition, illustrated with 12 engraved and very finely coloured plates, based on drawings made on site by Gottfried Geissler. They are accompanied by an explanatory text in German by Johann Gottfried Richter and the French translation on the back by P. Hacault. The painter and draughtsman Johann Geissler went to Russia in 1790 to teach drawing. In 1793 and 1794 he accompanied the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas on his second scientific expedition to southern Russia, and then spent a few years in the Crimea with the naturalist. On his return to his hometown of Leipzig, he published several books on Russia illustrated with drawings he had made there. The text was written by Johann Gottfried Richter, also a native of Leipzig, who was a tutor in Moscow for 16 years. In his commentaries he shows great knowledge of the customs, as well as great tenderness towards the Russian people. - Later half calf with mounted ms. title. - With noble bookplate. - A good copy of this unusual and rare work.

As member of the Academy of Sciences, he devoted his writings (on subjects such as gunpowder and metallurgy) to the use of artillery and propounded theories that led to controversies with the Marquis Antoine Baratier Saint-Auban and the Count de Buffon. In 1776 he was considered a military expert and received permission to go to America as a volunteer in the Continental Army, where he died in an accident in 1777. - Inside cover with ownership inscription (P.A. This copy lacks the 91 pages of Clavius' reprint of the tables, which was published as early as 1607 and partially bound in as the second part. - Van Roomen is best known for posing a problem in 1593, which involved the solution of an equation of degree 45. Haüy imagines the successive division of a crystalline sample by this cleavage process into solids of the same but ever smaller shape. These processes must eventually lead to a solid body that is so small that it can no longer be divided without destroying its essence. This line of reasoning thus establishes the principles of the existence of molecules that make up matter: It is the basis of atomic theory. Dort hielt er ebenfalls Vorlesungen zur Chiromantie: "Chiromantie ist ein Teil der anthropologischen Physiognomie, bei welcher von der Inspektion der Hand.... über verschiedene Dinge im menschlichen Leben Rückschlüsse ziehen kann" (Vgl. Porter Windows of the Soul, S. 88.) Die beigegebenen Holzschnitte zeigen Handflächen und darauf gezeichnete Lebenslinien. Fritz Uphoff sowie Ludwig Tügel gegründet wurde. Worpswede wurde zur Heimat bedeutender Künstler des Jugendstils, Impressionismus und des Expressionismus. Viele Kunstschaffende flüchteten aus der Stadt in die Künstlerkolonie auf der Suche nach ländlichen Motiven oder romantische Sehnsüchte nach bäuerlicher Idylle und einem einfachen, naturnahen Leben verfolgend. Worpswede became the home of important artists of Art Nouveau, Impressionism and Expressionism. Many artists fled from the city to the artists' colony in search of rural motifs or to pursue romantic longings for a rural idyll and a simple life close to nature. Das Werk gibt in keiner Form eine besonders herausragende wissenschaftliche Leistung wieder, fand aber enorme Verbreitung im späteren Mittelalter sowohl bei Laien- als auch Gelehrtenpublikum. Die vermutl. etw. später kolorierten Holzschnittillustrationen zeigen versch. Stadtansichten, eine Darstellung des Christus am Kreuz, Fabelwesen u.a. - Tls. mit zeitgenössischen hs. Flexible vellum of the time with handwritten spine title (stained and slightly creased, the closing bands removed). - Very rare. - According to Moreau, the date of 1524 is confirmed by the state of printing of the publisher's mark of Jean Petit. - The Fasciculus temporum presents a universal history in accessible form. The work does not in any form reflect a particularly outstanding scientific achievement, but found enormous circulation in the later Middle Ages among both lay and scholarly audiences. The woodcut illustrations, presumably colored at a later date, show various city views, a depiction of Christ, mythical creatures and others. - Partly with contemporary handwritten annotations and small drawings, the endpapers renewed and somewhat shaded with glue, with some backed areas, a few pages somewhat stained, foxed and creased, the last white sheet with a missing part. Overall good copy with some later but well-preserved colouring, some with gilt overlay.

Gezeigt werden Schlange, Eidechse, Maulwurf, Mäuse, Frösche, Muscheln und ein Hummer. Der in München lebende Künstler Raphael Winter (1784-1852) wurde von seinem Stiefvater, dem Radierer, Kupferstecher und Lithograf Johann Michael Mettenleiter beeinflusst. 1805 gründete er zusammen mit den Brüdern Dall'Armi die erste lithographische Druckerei in Rom und avancierte 1809 zum ersten Lithographen des königlichen Staatsrates und später zum Inspektor der Steindruckerei der Lithographischen Anstalt des bayerischen Staatsrates. In seinem künstlerischen Werk stellte er in seinen Zeichnungen Aquarellen und Grafiken vor allem zoologische Motive dar. - In der linken unteren Ecke mit kleinem Wasserfleck, sonst vor allem an den Rändern etwas braunfleckig, insgesamt wohlerhalten. - Von größter Seltenheit. Extremely rare set of lithographed animals and early contribution to zoological lithography. Shown are snake, lizard, mole, mice, frogs, mussels and a lobster. The artist Raphael Winter (1784-1852), who lived in Munich, was influenced by his Stepfather, the etcher, engraver and lithographer Johann Michael Mettenleiter. In 1805, together with the Dall'Armi brothers, he founded the first lithographic printing house in Rome and in 1809 advanced to become the first lithographer to the Royal Council of State and later became the inspector of the lithographic Institute of the Bavarian State Council. In his artistic work, he presented in his drawings watercolours and graphics mainly zoological motifs. - In the lower left corner with a small water stain, otherwise a bit brownish especially at the margins, overall in good condition. - Of the greatest rarity.

The Duke would not agree to such conditions, all negotiations remained fruitless, complaints to the Imperial Chamber Court were of no avail, the Duke did not comply with the imperial mandates, an imperial commission, which endeavoured to bring about mediation, was unsuccessful.
