Sir Peter Payne stood with Lord Tavistock as MP for Bedfordshire in an attempt to turn out William Stuart, who had been returned in 1830 but had caused great offence by opposing parliamentary reform. It was the last unreformed election as the victory ensured the passage of the Reform Act 1832, which increased the number of men entitled to vote and granted seats in the House of Commons to large cities which had resulted from the Industrial Revolution. Vivenel“ in Compiègne (Inv.-Nr. 1994.01.01) befindet (vgl. Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson A.R.A (1889-1946)Bacchus (Black 133) Drypoint and etching printed in sanguine, 1926-7, on cream Arches laid paper, a very good impression of this rare subject, signed in pencil, with full margins on three sides and a wide upper margin, a few minor repairs and defects, generally in good condition, framedPlate 351 x 275mm. (13 7/8 x 10 3/4in.);Sheet 473 x 378mm. (18 5/8 x 14 7/8in.)Footnotes:This unusual work stands out in Nevinson's oeuvre as the only mythological subject he produced and one of only two works executed in sanguine. The subject can be seen as a reference to the dissolute behaviour of the country's youth in the 1920s. Britain experienced a period of euphoria as the country emerged from the hardships of the First World War, which led to some paranoia in government circles that this could lead to over-indulgence and a breakdown in morals. Hence the depiction of the Roman god of wine with naked nymphs. Nevinson has kept the sharp angular forms which he used in his Futurist war images, but there is a nod to Art Deco in the use of mythological figures and application of bold colour, indicating a change in direction in his work. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

During this period, London was subjected to 71 separate raids, receiving over 18,000 tonnes of high explosive. Less intensive bombing continued over the following few years as Adolf Hitler concentrated on the Eastern front.London suffered severe damage and heavy casualties, the worst hit part being the area around London docks. This is a rare example of his work from that period, marked with his ED monogram but also carrying the mark of Lachenal. In 1903 Decoeur left Lachenal's workshop to set up his own studio.

This form was inspired by a George II silver original and was produced in three basic sizes. The grip at the bottom of the shell is a relatively unusual feature. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 12

A rare Worcester coffee cup, circa 1753-54Of quatrelobed shape, the crisply moulded double-scrolled handle with raised thumbrest, the front panel delicately painted with a 'Long Eliza' figure holding a parasol, the side panels with flowering plants growing from rockwork, a long-tailed bird perched on one of them, 6.8cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceJohn Alchin CollectionQuatrelobed Coffee CupsElegant yet impractical, this form shows a strong Meissen influence. Matching saucers for this rare form of cup are not recorded, suggesting that they were intended as cabinet pieces rather than objects of practical use. As well as the pattern represented here, the model is also recorded in famille verte style, see Sandon and Spero, The Zorensky Collection (1996), no.21, p.79. Curiously, only two examples are known in underglaze blue. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A comparable teabowl from the Gwen and Ronald McKnight Melvin Collection was shown by Simon Spero in his 2007 exhibition, cat. no.37 and a related bowl and saucer dish from the Cohen Collection was exhibited by Albert Amor in the 1992 exhibition catalogue, nos.55 and 59For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A very limited amount of Meissen porcelain was available and anything painted with European flowers made a refreshing change from famille rose. Chelsea was able to borrow and copy Meissen painted with 'deutsche Blumen' and this proved hugely popular in England. Worcester saw their chance and copied the Chelsea copies of Meissen. Success was guaranteed. For a similar example see John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), col. pl.99. The shape was first made in silver, while related objects are known in Chelsea, Derby, Japanese and Meissen porcelains as well as Dutch Delft. The pierced holes allowed condensation to drain off the butter, caused by the change in temperature when it was brought in from the dairy. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 14

A further rare Worcester coffee cup, circa 1753-54Of quatrelobed form, the crisply moulded double-scroll handle with a raised thumbrest, the front panel painted with a 'Long Eliza' figure holding a parasol, the side panels with flowering plants growing from rockwork, one with a small parrot-like bird perched in its branches, 6.9cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceSimon Spero Exhibition 1998, no.8John Alchin CollectionThis precise form is unique to Worcester of the early 1750s.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Peaches are a recognisable symbol of longevity in Chinese art. For discussions of this rare form at Worcester see Sandon and Spero, The Zorensky Collection (1996), p.122 and John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain, p.368. Lot 159

A rare Worcester bowl, circa 1756Painted in famille rose palette with an elaborate Chinese landscape, a kiln-like structure within a fenced compound beneath overhanging rocks, a bridge connecting two islands, the foreground with a man on horseback, his companion on foot carrying packages slung from a rod across his shoulders, another man in a sampan fishing, with buildings on tall stilts at the waterside nearby, the interior with scattered sprigs and panelled diaper border just below the rim, 15.1cm diam,Footnotes:ProvenanceVan Slyke CollectionMrs S B Sargeant CollectionZorensky Collection, Bonhams sale, 16 March 2004, lot 22Ralph Kenber CollectionThe painting on this bowl is exceptional in its use of perspective and depth and may have been made as a replacement for a Chinese original as part of a service. A Worcester teapot of the same pattern is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (C.74-1946), while in the H Rissik Marshall Collection in the Ashmolean Museum a Worcester teabowl is combined with a Chinese saucer. Zorka Hodgson refers to this design as the 'Bridge Inn' pattern and discusses it in her paper 'Origin of Chinese Designs on Early Worcester', see ECC Trans., Vol.12, Part 3, (1986), p.197.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 166

A rare Worcester porringer, circa 1757-58Lightly moulded with spiral wreathing and an ozier border, with twin twig handles, the interior transfer-printed in black with 'Les Garçons Chinois', two chinoiserie figures climbing a rococo branch, picked out in coloured enamels, a compressed version of the print repeated three times below the rim, the exterior painted with scattered sprigs in various tones of blue, 17.8cm wide across the handlesFootnotes:ProvenanceRalph Kenber CollectionTwo-handled shallow bowls or porringers are rare in English porcelain, this Continental shape most likely copied from contemporary Meissen or Chantilly. Other Worcester examples identified as porringers have been noted with the principal decoration placed inside the bowl, as here, and none of these have been recorded with a lid. This suggests these vessels were intended to be left open and not covered. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 169

A rare Worcester coffee can, circa 1754Of slightly flared shape with a grooved loop handle, decorated with a 'smoky primitive' chinoiserie print, two men conversing by a fenced terrace in front of an ornate pavilion, a jagged rock and willow tree to the right, all picked out in enamel colours, 6.6cm high, workman's mark and incised lineFootnotes:ProvenanceZorensky Collection, Bonhams sale, 23 February 2005, lot 254Ralph Kenber CollectionIllustrated by Sandon and Spero, The Zorensky Collection (1996), no.491. The printed design appears in 'The Ladies' Amusement', the long-tailed birds referred to as 'pheasants'. A smaller mug with the same print from the Dyson Perrins Collection is illustrated by Cyril Cook, The Life and Work of Robert Hancock (1948), item 83, fig. 1.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 177

A Worcester coffee pot and cover, circa 1768-70Of 'Warmstry Fluted' baluster shape, the scroll handle with pronounced thumbrest and the domed cover with a flower finial, transfer-printed in purple with the 'Tea Party no.2' and the 'Fortune Teller', classical ruins printed on the cover, and further formal decoration on the spout, the rims picked out in gold, 24cm high, square mark in underglaze blue (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceE and J Handley CollectionSimon Spero exhibition 2000, no. 26Ralph Kenber CollectionThis rare variant on the 'Tea Party no.2' print includes an attendant ready to serve tea to the seated couple and the unusual addition of an exotic cat amongst musical instruments in the foreground. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A rare Worcester finger bowl and stand, circa 1758-60The bowl of plain U-shape, the stand circular, both with petal-lobed rims, transfer-printed in black with chinoiserie scenes after Jean Pillement, the bowl with 'Le Chalet des Palmes' and 'Chalet Double', the stand with 'The Siesta', black line rims, the bowl 7.3cm high, the stand 15cm diam, (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceMerton Thoms Collection (stand)E and J Handley CollectionSimon Spero exhibition 2000, no. 22Ralph Kenber CollectionIllustrated by Joseph M Handley, 18th Century English Transfer-Printed Porcelain and Enamels (1991), pp.132-133, item 4.5. These images are from an exceptional series of prints based on the designs of Jean Pillement, a master of chinoiserie. Pillement lived in London during the 1750s and probably collaborated with the engraver Robert Hancock, prior to Hancock's move to Worcester. Pillement's imaginary scenes have been adapted most successfully to fit the shapes of this finger bowl and stand. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 18

A Worcester teapot and cover, circa 1754-55Of plain globular shape with a pointed finial, painted in colours in Chinese style with the 'Snake in a Basket' pattern of a 'Long Eliza' figure holding a fan, a basket containing a 'ruyi' sceptre beside two trees to the left, the cover with ribboned emblems or precious objects, 23.3cm high (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceSimon Spero Exhibition 1997, no.17John Alchin CollectionWares associated with the 'Scratch Cross' class tend to be hand thrown rather than moulded, a rare exception being lot 15 in this sale. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 28

A Worcester hexagonal creamboat, circa 1753-54With a lobed and everted rim and an angular handle with scrolled thumbrest, crisply moulded on both sides with scrolled panels painted in famille rose style, one with a Chinese figure pointing to the right, the other with a similar figure, two insects below the spout and flower spays within the interior, 10.5cm longFootnotes:ProvenanceSimon Spero exhibition 1996, no.25John Alchin CollectionThe same standing Chinese figure is found on a moulded creamboat in the Zorensky Collection. See Bonhams sale, 23 February 2005, lot 2.Hexagonal CreamboatsA staple product of Worcester's early years, the hexagonal-shaped creamboat originated at Limehouse and continued at the Lund's Bristol factory. Creamboats of this general form are surprisingly rare in English silver of the period, customers preferring porcelain to pour a costly mixture of cream and sugar on their deserts. The low creamboat shape probably corresponds to the '...pannel'd cream ewers' from the factory's London warehouse price list. Surviving examples show enormous variety in the mouldings used on early Worcester creamboats; the examples in this sale illustrating just how much even the geranium leaves below the spout can differ in form. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 29

A Worcester hexagonal creamboat, circa 1753-54Of hexagonal form with an angular handle, a gently corrugated border just below the rim, moulded in high relief with sprigs of flowers carefully outlined in black and picked out in colours, crisply moulded birds and insects to either side left unadorned, a flower sprig and precious objects within the interior, 10.7cm longFootnotes:ProvenanceSimon Spero exhibition 1996, no.24Elizabeth Handley CollectionSimon Spero exhibition 2007, Ronald Melvin Collection, no.20John Alchin CollectionThe crispness of the moulded detail is accentuated by the decision of the decorator to leave the insect and bird sprigs in the white, possibly inspired by Chinese bland-de-chine via saltglaze stoneware. For a similar example from the Elizabeth Handley and Paul and Bunny Davies Collections, see Simon Spero's exhibition, 2013, no.17. A rare form of decoration. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 45

A Worcester tankard, circa 1755-56With a gently spreading foot and a broad strap handle, painted in Kakiemon colours with a version of the 'Sir Joshua Reynolds' pattern, a long-tailed bird perched on a tall rock from which flowering branches grow to either side, 9.1cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceJohn Alchin collectionThis is a particularly rare and early example of the pattern on Worcester porcelain. Although clearly Japanese in style, the precise origin of this pattern remains unclear. A possible source is illustrated by R L Hobson, Worcester Porcelain (1910), pl.XXXIV where a close-up of the painting on a Japanese vase is shown alongside two Worcester pieces which appear to follow it very closely. The present lot differs slightly from these, the tail feathers of the bird being smaller and less curvaceous. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The spontaneity of the decoration and rich famille verte palette combine with an English form to create what must have been a great novelty to 18th century eyes. Such cups were not sold with saucers and may have been intended as cabinet pieces. This reeded form is particularly rare. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
