Lot 478

12.5 x 8 cm card signed by Canadian Lt Col John Keefer Mahony VC CD. On 24 May 1944 Major Mahony led his company across the Melfa River in Italy under heavy artillery fire. His task was to secure a bridgehead for the 1st Canadian Corps to break through the Adolf Hitler Line. Threatened by vastly superior forces, Mahony?s company managed to hold the bridgehead for 5 hours until reinforcements arrived. In 2 German counter attacks, his men destroyed 3 enemy self propelled guns and a tank - a significant feat considering they had no anti - tank guns! He suffered 3 wounds, but inspired his men and directed the fire of the light anti - tank weapons on hand. For his exemplary leadership and courage in this action, Major Mahony was awarded the Victoria Cross. Lt Col Mahony died in London, Ontario 15.12.1990.An extremely rare signature. Good condition.

A pleasant neighbor?. The first routes were built in the 1830s, in 1843 the lines between Paris and Orléans were opened. There were three different categories, the carriages were similar to the horse carriages in Paris. Scientist warned that the speed of 25 km/h could cause severe brain damage. Ajax (74 guns). In that ship he assisted, while at the siege of St. Sebastian, in taking the island of Santa Clara, and was present, as a Midshipman, at the blockade of Rochefort and of Toulon, the surrender of Marseilles, and the capture of a vast number of the enemy's armed and other vessels. Joining next the Queen Charlotte (100 guns), he took part in the bombardment of Algiers, 27.8.1816, and on that occasion he particularly attracted the notice of his Commander-in-Chief, whose orders he was throughout the action employed in conveying to the different ships of the fleet. The boat he commanded was frequently under the necessity of being partially re-manned, in consequence of the great loss of her crew killed and wounded. In 1817 he proceeded to St. Helena in H.M.S. Sappho (18 guns) to guard the exiled Emperor Napoleon, before transferring to the Seringapatam, in the boats of which he assisted in the capture and destruction of various pirate vessels in the West Indies. Subsequently serving in H.M.S. Naiad (46 guns) in the Mediterranean, he contributed to the defeat of the Algerine corvette Tripoli (18 guns), 31.1.1824, and also to the destruction of a 16-gun brig moored alongside the walls of the fortress of Bona, in which there was a garrison of about 400 soldiers, who kept a tremendous fire onto the deck, 23.5.1824; afterwards, in charge of the ship's barge, he brought out a piratical mistico from the island of Hydra. Re-joining the Seringapatam, he frequently landed, at the head of a division of Seamen, in order to co-operate with the marines of both the Seringapatam and Revenge in hostilities against the pirates of other Greek settlements in the Archipelago. Promoted for his gallantry at Bona to Lieutenant, June 1826, he returned to England, and was appointed to the Coastguard, July 1832. Later that year he was awarded his first R.N.I.P.L.S. Silver Medal for the rescue of the sole survivor of the sloop Dartmouth, wrecked at Rye, Sussex, the citation reading: '11th November 1832: The sloop Dartmouth was wreck

[Lot of 2] Map No. 1 [and] Map No. 2 Reconnaissance and Survey of a Railway Route from Mississippi River near 35th ParallelÂ…to Pacific Ocean These are the larger maps that were included in the rare 8vo Pacific Railway atlas. They should not be confused with the same titled, smaller and much more common maps from the 4vo volume. This pair of matching maps are the result of the explorations and surveys of Lieut. A.W. Whipple and Lieut. J.C. Ives, Topographical Engineers, and A.H. Campbell, Civil Engineer. Wheat says Whipple ""had demonstrated that the route which he had surveyed was practicable for a railroad, and the Santa Fe Railroad now traverses much of it Â… This is an important map, in its two parts, and reflects great credit upon Whipple and his entire party."" The first map extends from the vicinity of Memphis and Vicksburg to the Rio Grande valley at Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Locates forts Arbuckle, Washita, Smith and numerous Indian villages. Drawn by A. Schimmelfinnig. Map No. 2 continues from Albuquerque westward to Los Angeles via Cajon Pass. Also locates forts, Indian lands, pueblos such as Zuni, and the gold and silver mines in New Mexico. Drawn by M. von Hippel. The route of the exploring parties is delineated on both with each camp site indicated. The size given is approximate for each map: together they are over 12 feet in length! These maps are uncommon and are rarely offered together. Issued folding with light offsetting, numerous short splits at fold intersections, and toning along the folds. Map No. 1 has a 3"" binding tear at left. 26.5"" W x 75"" H Whipple, Amiel Weekes 1855

Map of the State of New-York with Part of the States of Pennsylvania, New-Jersey &c. This is Lay`s rare, separately published wall map of the great Empire State. Lay first published this map of the entire state of New York in 1817, based on previous editions in 1801 and 1812 that only depicted the northern portion of the state. According to Ristow, the 1819 edition was the first revision of the map, with further editions in 1822, 1823, 1824, and 1826. The map shows the majority of Pennsylvania, extending south to Philadelphia, and includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont. The map also provides a detailed view of the Canadian border just a few years after the United States declared war on Great Britain in the War of 1812. The map shows most of Lake Erie and all of Lake Ontario with the counties of Upper Canada well shown. It delineates the St. Laurence River to St. Regis at the US/Canada boundary. There is excellent detail of county development, roads, turnpikes, courthouses, forts, mills, Indian villages, battlefields, and iron works, identified by a key at top left. The ""proposed"" routes of the Erie Canal are shown extending to the Hudson River, with construction already having begun in 1817. The eastern end of Long Island is inset in the Atlantic. County development is up-to-date for 1818, with the newly organized Tompkins county, but prior to Seneca extending south into Tompkins in 1819.Printed on 8 sheets, joined. A nice impression with original outline color that has been partially refreshed and a few printer`s creases at top left. There is light soiling and scattered foxing in the bottom half of the map, becoming more moderate in the top half. There are professional repairs to a few small holes, primarily in northeast Pennsylvania. There are some tears and cracks (mostly 1"" to 4"" in length, with one 6"" crack at top right) that have also been professionally repaired. Margins have been extended a bit to accommodate framing. 50"" W x 50.1"" H Lay, Amos 1819

A Plan of the Attack of Fort Sulivan, near Charles Town in South CarolinaÂ… This rare Revolutionary War battle plan depicts a pivotal British naval assault on Fort Sullivan, near Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston was a critical location as it was the largest city and only port in the South. In the summer of 1776, the British dispatched a fleet of ships to regain the possession of Fort Sullivan from the Americans. The map shows the original positions of the British ships, along with their regiment numbers, in the upper-right corner. An inset map depicts the plan of Fort Sullivan. Behind the fort, a makeshift ""bridge of boats"" connects Sullivan`s Island with the mainland and the site of the Rebel`s camp. The British ships are illustrated near the fort along with their names and the number of guns on each. Due to tactical errors and misinformation, the British lost the battle despite the fact that they had more than double the manpower and firepower than the Americans. This is the first state of the map, and includes a dedication to Commodore Sir Peter Parker by Lt. Colonel Thos. James. Original color and wide margins, with light toning confined to the blank margins. 11"" W x 14.6"" H Faden, William 1776

Texas This rare map of Texas was issued in Edward Stiff`s The Texan Emigrant: Being a Narration of the Adventures of the Author in Texas and was intended as a guide for people who planned to settle in Texas. Howes calls it ""one of the most objective accounts of Texas affairs issued in the days of the Republic."" The map itself is similar to those issued by William Hooker several years earlier but with fewer details. Texas is shown in its smaller Republic configuration with the Nueces River designated as the southwestern boundary of Texas. Fourteen land grants are named including Beales Grant, Austin & Williams Grant, and DeWitts Grant to name just a few. Austins Colony locates many settlements including San Felipe de Austin, Houston, Columbus and Montgomery. Engraved by Doolittle & Munson and published by George Conclin in Cincinnati. An important map rarely seen on the market. Issued folding and now flattened and backed with linen to reinforce and repair several short fold separations and a 1.5"" binding tear at lower right. Texas Compiled from the Latest and Best Authorities According to Rumsey, this map comes from a rare 1848 reissue of GreenleafÂ’s 1842 Universal Atlas. Greenleaf`s earlier 1842 map of Texas, which is nearly identical to this example, was based upon BurrÂ’s map of 1833 (which was the first to show the territorial claims that would eventually become the Republic). Texas is now part of the United States with the only update being the southern border now shown along the Rio Grande (the earlier edition conservatively had the border along the Nueces River) and the addition of San Patricio county. Development is confined to areas to the east of San Antonio and Austin, with the areas to the west void of detail except for the river system. Portions of Indian Territory, Arkansas and Louisiana are also shown. A nice impression with a few tiny edge tears and chips confined to the blank margins and minor toning along the top of the sheet. 10.7"" W x 12.8"" H Greenleaf, Jeremiah 1848

Iowa Territory is in a rare configuration, stretching from Missouri to the Canadian border and bounded east and west by the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Annotated with the populations for the states and Texas. The large inset at lower left is a detailed ""Map of Mexico and Guatimala"" and shows the Republic of Texas. Drawn and engraved by Stiles, Sherman & Smith. There is one tiny spot in Indian Territory and a short, archivally repaired centerfold separation at bottom. 10.4"" W x 17.6"" H Burgess, Daniel 1839

It was the first atlas made up of lithographed maps, and the first to present all the maps on the same scale (1: 1,641,836), with each map covering an area of approximately 20 degrees longitude (from Paris) and 6 degrees of latitude. If all the maps were joined together they would form a globe of 7.75 meters in diameter. The maps were published by subscription between 1825 and 1827, with each part containing ten maps. There was only one edition and the subscription list shows that 810 copies were sold; thus the maps are quite rare. See description See description Vandermaelen, Philippe Marie Guillaume 1825

De Cust van Westindien, Tusschen Punta St. Blaes, en Punta d Naes This rare chart focuses on the coastline between Portobelo and the Gulf of San Blas. This area was extremely important to the Spanish treasure fleets during the 16th century. The port cities of Nombre de Dios and Portobelo, established in 1510 and 1597 respectively, are shown. Two forts are situated at the entrance to the Bay of Portobelo. The chart gives detail of anchorages, soundings, rocks and shoals. Two fine compass roses orient the chart with north on the bottom and a strapwork cartouche completes the adornment. Arent Roggeveen, a land surveyor and mathematician, taught navigation for the Dutch East and West India Companies. He also helped maintain their collection of hydrographic manuscripts and charts. In the mid 1660s, Roggeveen compiled a series of large-scale sea charts of North America and the West Indies, which was published by Pieter Goos in Het Brandende Veen or The Burning Fen. This landmark atlas was the first Dutch pilot to focus on the Americas, with a number of regions mapped in larger scale than in any previously printed work. After Goos died in 1679, his widow sold the plates to Jacob Robijn, who reissued the maps with his name added to the title, as seen here. Both editions are extremely rare. Watermarked paper with a narrow top margin, as issued. 16.8"" W x 19.8"" H Roggeveen, Arent 1675

Europa/ die Erst Tafel des Ersten Buchs This rare and striking woodcut map of Europe is oriented with south at the top. Although the map is a derivative of Munster`s map of Europe, first published in his Cosmographia in 1544, it supersedes Munster`s map with its elaborate decorations. The continent is filled with miniature bird`s-eye views of towns, trees, exaggerated rivers, and rope-like mountain ranges. The surrounding waters are teeming with galleons and sea monsters of every variety, reminiscent of Olas Magnus` Carta Marina. At the top of the map, to the right of Sardinia, is the sea God Triton, who plays music to calm or raise the waves in the sea. The various seas are labeled in decorative cartouches. This map was first published in Stumpf`s Gemeiner Loblicher Eydgnoschafft, which was the first national atlas of Switzerland, and the first national atlas published in Europe. Twenty-three woodblock maps were included in the first edition of Stumpf`s atlas, of which 10 were acquired from Honter`s Rudimenta Cosmografica. The remaining 13 maps, including this map of Europe, were newly engraved for Stumpf`s atlas based on the work of Waldseemuller and Munster. It is believed that Stumpf`s atlas was such an excellent example of bookmaking that it incited Munster to make significant improvements to his second edition of Cosmographia. An excellent impression with original margins, light toning along the centerfold, and a few small spots of foxing. There is marginal soiling and an archivally repaired centerfold separation in the bottom blank margin, far from map. 11"" W x 15.4"" H Stumpf, Johann 1548

Present-day Ohio is divided into Indian lands, Army lands, Virginia lands, and the Seven Ranges, which was the first tract to be surveyed under the Public Land Survey System. Numerous forts and towns are named, including Chicago and Detroit. The significant map of Georgia covers from the Atlantic seaboard to the Mississippi River; present-day Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. [Map and 3 Text Volumes] Carte Generale des Etats de Virginie, Maryland, Delaware, Pensilvanie, Nouveau-Jersey, New-York, Connecticut, et Isle de Rhodes...[and] Lettres d`un Cultivateur AmericainÂ… This is an updated French edition of Evans` rare and important map of the Middle Colonies that was first published in 1755. It was produced for St. John de Crevecoeur`s book and includes some additions in New England, but fewer than the extensive additions of Pownall`s 1776 reissue, according to McCorkle. Engraved by Pierre Francois Tardieu. Highly detailed, the map covers the frontier, not just the better known populated areas of the states. It extends to include Lakes Ontario and Erie, and the St. Lawrence River to Montreal. The map randomly uses French or English for the scores of place names, while most notations and the legend are in English. A large inset at upper left ""Esquis se duresse de la Riviere de l`Ohio"" shows the course of the Ohio River to the Mississippi and up to Lakes Michigan and Huron. The French had better knowledge of the Great Lakes area as evidenced by additions on this map not found on the original Evans. For example, the Portage of Chikago, Fort Erie, and St. Louis are shown and the Niagara River valley contains more detail of the watershed in the region. De Crevecoeur also included updated information in New England particularly in Vermont, where Dartmouth College, Putney, Bennington, and Westminster are located. Kentucky is erroneously named as a state and there are early references to important cities in the region like Louisville and Leestown, which was the first Anglo-American settlement on the north side of the Kentucky River and is now part of Frankfort. The map names Indian tribes and a legend explains their status: Extinct; Nearly extinct; and those that are Still considerable. Included with the map are the three matched volumes of text, including an untitled bridge plate over the Shetuket River near Norwich, CT. Volume 1 (478 pp.), volume 2 (438 pp.), volume 3 (592 pp.). Octavo, hardbound in original full calf with gilt title on red labels on spine, marbled endpapers and all edges gilt. A very attractive map with complete text.See also lot 773 for Schwartz and Ehrenberg`s excellent reference work, which describes this map. The map is issued folding with faint offsetting. Covers are lightly rubbed with bumped edges. 18.9"" W x 25.8"" H Crevecoeur, Michel Guillaume De 1787
