Thence by descent to Jennifer Longford, née Stevenson (1929-2012), daughter of Frances Stevenson and possibly (now generally assumed) David Lloyd George.Thence by descent to the present owner and vendor in 2012.David Lloyd George:David Lloyd George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, OM PC (British, 1863-1945) was a British statesman and Liberal Party politician from Wales who had a long and distinguished political career in Britain. He initially served as Chancellor of Exchequer, later Minister of Munitions and then Minister of War before becoming Prime Minister between 1916 and 1922, when he ousted his then party leader Herbert Asquith. As the last Liberal to serve as Prime Minister, he held the office during the final two years of the First World War and led the British delegation at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference where he was principal negotiator. The conference subsequently saw the signing of 'The Treaty of Versailles' by the 'Big Four' which aside from Lloyd George for Great Britain, included the US President, Woodrow Wilson, the French Prime Minister, George Clemenceau and the Italian Statesmen, Vittorio Emanuele Orlando. However, Lloyd George's tenure as Prime Minister ended in 1922 after the Conservatives withdrew their support from his coalition government. Lloyd George visited the United States and Canada in the autumn of 1923. Accompanied by his wife, Margaret, their youngest daughter, Megan and his private secretary, A. J Sylvester, the purpose of the tour was to personally thank both countries for their help during the Great War and was a resounding international success. A contemporary British Pathe newsreel clip entitled 'Welcome, Lloyd George!' from October 1923 (available to view online), documents the arrival of the Welsh statesmen and politician to great acclaim. It includes footage of the huge street parades that were held in his honour and captions to the silent film include 'Biggest crowds in New York streets since homecoming of US', '(U.S.) Troops greet the 'Wizard of Wales' and 'Bombarded by hundreds of cameramen.'A further contemporary Pathe Gazette newsreel clip from later that month entitled 'In Minneapolis' - 'L.L. G.' meets Sioux Chief - 'Two Eagle' – eagle in peace, eagle in war' (also available to view online) further documents Lloyd George meeting and accepting gifts from the Chief and other elderly statesmen of the Sioux tribe and this can be viewed under 'Ll G Sioux Chief Aka Lloyd George – Sioux Chief (1923)'Lastly a black and white documentary photographic image (available to view online at www.bonhams.com) from this same meeting at Minneapolis illustrates the meeting of Lloyd George and Chief 'Two Eagle' and other members of the Sioux tribe and was used in the New York times, published 23rd October 1923 entitled 'Lloyd George on the warpath: the British War Premier' A possible explanation for why Lloyd George came to visit Minneapolis and why he was presented with the current lot which depicts a Sioux warrior can be confirmed in a historical biography of the Sioux physician Charles Ohiyesa Eastman and his Euro-American wife Elaine Goodale by Gretchen Cassel Eick, entitled 'They Met at Wounded Knee – The Eastmans' story'In the biography, Eick comments that in 1922 the US Secretary of the Interior appointed Charles Eastman to a national advisory 'Committee of One Hundred' to make recommendations to the President on Native American policy. 'The 'Committee of One Hundred' proposed reversing the policy of banning (Native) Indian dances and ceremonies. It recommended providing scholarships to allow (Native) Indians to attend public schools and colleges whilst improving the health conditions on reservations, all positions Charles Eastman advocated'.Eick then pertinently comments 'That year (1923) Eastman organised a reception for David Lloyd George.. who wished to meet some American (Native) Indians. Charles made sure that Lloyd George's wish was more than fulfilled'.Eick then confirms that at the meeting which took place on October 15th 1923 'Eastman led a delegation from the Cheyenne River Reservation to the Madison Hotel, Minneapolis, where they presented the Prime Minister (Lloyd George) with a peace pipe, headdress and an honorary Lakota name. The prime minister's adoption by the tribe was recorded on film, and President Calvin Coolidge wrote to Eastman that it was the most memorable part of Lloyd George's American visit'Cyrus Edwin Dallin: Cyrus Edwin Dallin was an American sculptor who created more than two hundred and sixty works during his career in a variety of subjects and was also an accomplished painter and an Olympic archer. However, he is best remembered for his heroic-scale public tributes in honour of America's indigenous peoples. As a child, Dallin was close to Ute families who lived on the nearby Springville settlement, and he had a deep respect for their culture and history. Because of this he was profoundly disturbed by the crimes he witnessed being perpetrated against them and other native tribes by the US government. As such his sculptures were intended as admiring personal reflections and social and political comments on their resilience in the face of ongoing subjugation. The offered lot of 'Appeal to the Great Spirit' is a reduction of the monumental group located in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts which is arguably Dallin's most famous work. It was exhibited at the National Sculpture Society in 1908 and awarded a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1909 before being finally unveiled in Boston in 1912. Dallin confirmed that the piece depicted a mounted Sioux chief engaged in prayer with a higher power after defeat by the U.S. Army, commenting that he had captured the moment when the chief had made his'final appeal to the Great Spirit' after 'his signal of peace...had been rejected'. It was the fourth and final work in a series of equestrian sculptures that Dallin completed between 1890 and 1909 which he collectively called 'The Epic of the Indian'. In the first quarter of the twentieth century over four hundred authorised small-scale bronze casts of 'Appeal to the Great Spirit' were produced in three different sizes, this cast being the smallest size. An 18th century Maltese silver Torah pointermaker's mark 'LF' possibly for Luigi Fenech, 'MA' mark with crown above for Pinto period circa 1750, six pellet mint mark indicating the finest Maltese silver (French standard 930/1000) A long tapering rod, the top half featuring a spiral fluted handle of multiple knopped baluster form, a pommel terminal with suspension ring and original chain attached ending in a hook, the plain lower stem featuring three pairs of horizontal engraved lines, the second ring disguising a section where the pointer unscrews into two halves, the lower half being solid and the upper section featuring an empty compartment, with the plain tapering lower section terminating in a ball bearing the assay marks stated, length 32.5cm, weight 3.12oz.Footnotes:For various reasons, this is a mysterious item. At first glance this piece of Maltese silver appears to be a Torah pointer, and was owned by a prominent Maltese noble family with aristocratic British roots. However, they were staunch Catholics rather than Jews, so why would they have a piece of Judaica? In addition, at the time this pointer was made (the Pinto period), it was illegal for Jews to practice their religion in Malta. To elucidate further, in 1492 the Jewish population of Malta and Sicily were given three months to leave Malta, with forced conversions to Catholicism, or exile. A much smaller Jewish community developed under the role of the Knights of Malta, consisting primarily of slaves and emancipated slaves. Under the rule of certain Grandmasters of the Order, the Jews were made to reside in Valletta's prison at night, while by day they remained free to transact business, trade and commerce among the general population. They remained enslaved during the whole of the 17th and 18th century, with a population of circa 2000 (around 5% of the Maltese population). The Jewish community could only re-establish itself after 1798 under British rule.Knowing the above history, this piece was crafted during the tenure of Emmanuel Pinto de Fonseca (24th May 1681 – 24th January 1773), who was the 68th Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta from 1741 until his death. He was a Portuguese nobleman, the son of Miguel Álvaro Pinto de Fonseca, Alcaide-Mór de Ranhados, and his wife, Ana Pinto Teixeira. The silversmith 'LF', possibly Luigi Fenech who was elected to the Guild of Sant'Elena in 1739 (Jimmy Farrugia, 'Ecclesiastical Silver' p.322) in theory could not have openly made or assayed this piece, as this would have been deemed illegal - it therefore would have been a 'hidden' item. The pointer also unscrews forming two parts, which is also unusual for a Torah pointer; the untwisted upper section reveals a small compartment for possible concealment of a note, or other such thing. In addition, the Yad tip does not end in the traditional form of a fist with the index finger extended, but rather an assayed rounded ball. After contacting Alaine Apap Bologna, an authority on Maltese silver, her comments were as follows: 'Your suspicion (and mine) is that it is a disguised Yad and therefore extremely rare. Your research on the Jews in Malta is correct, up to a point. Recent information regarding them has surfaced ... If I understood correctly, they were tolerated more than stated. They even had a small Synagogue in Valletta (to be checked). Jewish merchants entered and exited the Grand Harbour. They were allowed to sell their products, from the Pinto period and especially during the Rohan period. They were however obliged to respect a curfew'. Interestingly research has since uncovered the existence of another Maltese Torah pointer from this period, located in the Jewish Museum, New York (Accession Number: F5401). However the owner of the Maltese Torah pointer on offer here has also imparted an alternative theory, stating that her Uncle was told many years ago that the 'Yad' was actually used by the Knights of the Order of St. John to hold / transport secret messages, and was hung from their regalia by its chain. To that end, despite extensive research, the mystery behind this Maltese fine silver Pinto period Torah pointer has still not been resolved, but maybe someone reading this has the answer? We would like to thank Alaine Apap Bologna for her kind assistance with the research of this lot.LiteratureBologna, Alaine Apap, The Silver of Malta, Lifa, Malta: MAG Publications, 1995Farrugia, Jimmy, Antique Maltese Ecclesiastical Silver, 2 vols.
