A late 18th Century rare double sided glazed pendent gold locket, mounted obverse with pale coloured hair tied as a stylised bow set with seed pearls and further decorated with a gold and pearl anchor motif and, in the centre, the initial N, and date 1st Aug. 1798, set in gold and enamel within a rope work and seed pearl border ; and mounted reverse with a simple tied spray of auburn hair set with seed pearls, English, circa 1800, 8cm high (total) The initial N; Naval motifs and associated date suggest that the pale coloured spray of hair on the obverse of the locket belonged to Admiral Lord Nelson and that it was mounted shortly after his great victory at the battle of the Nile on 1 August 1798. The use of a single initial also indicates that the hair was mounted before the admiral was created Duke of Bronte by King Ferdinand of Naples in August 1799. Following his elevation to the Dukedom, Nelson invariably used the dual initials NB in correspondence and to decorate his possessions. Between August 1798 and August 1799, Nelson remained in Naples as a guest of the British Envoy, Sir William Hamilton. During this period, Nelson developed a strong attachment to Emma, Lady Hamilton which led, famously, to their full blown and scandalous love affair. This promotes the intriguing and romantic possibility that the darker, auburn coloured hair on the reverse of the locket belonged to Emma Hamilton. It closely matches the description and other known surviving hair of Emma`s, notably a lock mounted behind a miniature of her carried by Nelson to his death at Trafalgar and now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. No other double sided hair locket of this type is known to be associated with Nelson and Emma, Lady Hamilton. Moreover, the early date and decoration suggests that it is not a memento mori but a presentation gift to an admirer or associate whilst they were both in Naples and before their return to England together in 1800. If such, it is a unique relic of an enduring love affair.

RARE ENGLAND V SCOTLAND MATCHDAY PROGRAMME FROM `THAT MATCH` IN 1967 The match, a qualifying tie for the Henri Delaunay Cup, played on April 15th 1967 is Scotland`s most famous victory against England. England had won the 1966 FIFA World Cup at Wembley less than a year previously and were undefeated in 19 games. Despite fielding four of the Celtic side that had just won the 1967 European Cup Final and stars such as Denis Law, Jim Baxter and Billy Bremner, Scotland were massive underdogs going into the match. Scotland took an early lead through a goal by Law, and Bobby Lennox put Scotland 2-0 up with just 12 minutes remaining. England were somewhat hampered by the fact that Jack Charlton suffered an injury early in the game. England manager Alf Ramsey was unable to substitute Charlton and therefore decided to use him in the unfamiliar role of centre forward. Ironically, Charlton scored England`s first goal. Scotland soon reestablished a two goal lead, however, with Jim McCalliog making the score 3-1. Geoff Hurst scored a late goal to make the final score 3-2 to Scotland. Baxter memorably played "keepie uppie" as Scotland toyed with their opponents late in the game. The Scots playfully claimed afterwards that the victory made them unofficial world champions. Ultimately however it was England who qualified for the 1968 European Championship because of results in the other matches. Note: The teamsheet page on the centre of the programme is autographed by Jackie Charlton

Lot 1258

LARGE & RARE IRISH SILVER MOUNTED HORN SNUFF MULL the hinged silver lid marked for Dublin 1829 and engraved with a crest dated 1690 to commemorate the Battle of the Boyne, 37cm long Note: The Battle of the Boyne was fought in 1690 between two rival claimants of the English, Scottish and Irish thrones-the Catholic King James and the Protestant King William, who had deposed James in 1688. The battle, won by William, was a turning point in James` unsuccessful attempt to regain the crown and ultimately helped ensure the continuation of Protestant supremacy in Ireland. The battle took place on 1 July 1690 (old style Julian calendar-equivalent to 12 July `new style` or Gregorian calendar) just outside the town of Drogheda on Ireland`s east coast. The armies stood on opposing sides of the River Boyne. William`s forces defeated those of James who led an army of mostly raw recruits. The symbolic importance of this battle has made it one of the best-known battles in British and Irish history. It is a key part in Ulster Protestant folklore and is still commemorated today, principally by the Orange Institution. As a consequence of the adoption of the Gregorian calendar (or "New Style" dating) the battle is now commemorated on 12 July each year.
