A Mamluk-style glass flask, Josef Lobmeyr (1792-1855) designed by architects Jan Machytka and Franz Schmoranz, Austria, circa 1878, The squat globular form with tapering neck and collar, over a high conical foot, painted with three large medallions enclosing a stylised flower flanked by panels of gilt leaf scroll above a band of bold naskh inscriptions in gilding divided by rosettes, the neck with a Kufic inscription in white enamel, with inscription to base in German and Lobmeyr's maker's mark,31cm. high.  Footnotes: An almost identical flask is in the MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna (Inv. GL 2573)The inscriptions translate as 'The realm belongs to God, the One and Eternal, the Truthful', 'Oh thou, who passest this clear water, drink.'Originally established in Bohemia in 1822/23, the glasshouse of Josef Lobmeyr (1792-1855) produced glass of a high standard in the second quarter of the 19th century but also sold the products of different manufacturers. The firm was later entitled  J.& L.Lobmeyr and was run principally from 1855 by his two sons Josef and Ludwig. By this time they no longer operated their own glassworks but commissioned glass to their own designs from Haida and elsewhere in Bohemia. The first major exhibition in which Lobmeyr participated was that of  London in 1862. Here they were awarded a gold medal "for excellence in the making of crystal glass, tableware, and candelabra". Ludwig Lobmeyr, who took over the firm after the premature death of his brother Joseph, contacted Rudolf von Eitelberger, the founder of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, during the period of the exhibition. The two men's objective was the promotion of good taste in design. Ludwig Lobmeyr used the museum's exhibits as inspirational models for his glassware and regularly exhibited his new creations at the museum and at the World Fairs.Supplied by manufacturers of glass in Bohemia both for home consumption and export, Lobmeyr became one of the leading glass sellers of the second half of the 19th century and their new glass took the exhibitions by storm. At the Vienna Exhibition of 1873 Lobmeyr was singled out for the highest praise. The architects Johann Machytka and Franz Schmoranz (1845-1892) travelled extensively in Palestine. For Lobmeyr, they designed a considerable number of vessels in 'Arabian style' between 1876 and 1878, drawing their inspiration from original pieces in museums in Cairo and elsewhere. These new designs were much sought after when they were displayed in Paris in the 1878 Exposition. Lobmeyr continued to exhibit at all the major international fairs in the last quarter of the 19th century. The present lot is based on an extremely rare 13th century Egyptian or Syrian Mamluk form, an example of which was mentioned by G. Schmoranz in his publication Old Oriental gilt and enamelled glass vessels, 1899, p.33. See the example from the Collection of the Late Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild, sold Christie's London, 14th December 2000, lot 48 and that in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv. 328-1900). Gustav Scmoranz's drawings in the 1870s provided the designs for several of the Islamic styles introduced by Lobmeyr. See W.Neuwirth, Orientalisierende Gläser, 1981, p.51, pl.18Condition Report: This lot presents as clean overall with strong enamels. The gilding although strong overall, shows some scattered minimal losses noticeable only under close inspection. Under U. V the rendering is homogenous. Only one area renders a bright pink reflection : a minute spot above the medial letter Ù‚ of the inscription applied to the flaring neck. An inspection with a loupe reveals some superficial dark matter, perhaps a misfiring to the enamel or a later deposit, now dried. No attempts were made to remove it. The foot shows a chip and a flake right above it affecting the gilt band. Opposite the chip, to the foot, the lot shows a large loss on approximately 3cm. leading to a series of flakes above interrupting the same gilt band.

Lot 10

An intact buff pottery askos, Luristan, North Iran, circa 8th Century B.C.with convex upper body, flat base and funnel neck with thickened out-turned rim and two pierced lug handles, painted with geometric designs in red ochre consisting of triangles arranged in a quatrefoil star formation and hatched ladder-like bands, over a cream ground, 16.5cm. highProvenance: UK private collection; acquired by the vendor in 1963 in Iran.Published: S. Middleton, A Preliminary Identification and Tentative Chronology for A Small Collection of Ceramics from Iran (Oxford 1999), no. 20.Regina Krahl, China Without Dragons: Rare Pieces from Oriental Ceramic Society, (CA Book Publishing 2020), no. 7, p. 30. This flask is a rare example of a type of pottery excavated at Baba Jan Tepe, Luristan (Tepe Baba Jan III type), although no other flask of this type appears to have been found at the site. See C. Goff , Luristan in the First Half of the First Millennium B.C., (Iran, vol. 6 1968, vol. 7 1969; vol. 16, 1978), for information on this site.Condition Report: Intact

Lot 246

A monumental bronze bowl signed ‘Abu Bakr Muhamad Ibn Hasan Al-Herati’,Herat, Iran, 13th century,of hemispherical form on a short foot, with wide flaring rim, the rim with six inscription cartouches, four comprising thuluth inscriptions and rabbits on a vegetal ground and two with naskh inscriptions, alternating with roundels, area of loss to rim, 71.3cm. diam. Published: Christie’s Arts of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, Including works from the Simon Digby Collection, Thursday 7 April 2011, lot 46 (£70,000-100,000 estimate). Provenance: Acquired by the vendor from a UK Private Collection, where it had reputedly been acquired in the 1960’s.Inscriptions:In thuluth to the rim: al'izz wa'l-iqbal wa'l-dawla wa'l salama wa'l-shafa'a wa'l-... wa'l-shukr wa'l-shakira wa'l-'afiya wa'l-tama wa'l-rahma wa'l-rahima, "Glory and fortune and wealth and well-being and happiness and intercession and ... and gratitude and gratefulness and health and entirety and mercy and compassion."In naskh to the rim: Owner's inscription haji hasan (?) khalvati, "Haji Hasan (?) Khalvati"Maker's inscription 'amal abi bakr muhammad ibn hasan (?) al-herati, "made by 'Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Hasan al-Herati" Footnotes: This large bowl is a very rare example of large scale Khorassan metalwork, the quality of which is confirmed by the engraved inscriptions; the maker's signature to the rim, the owner's inscription, and the benedictory inscriptions in thuluth wishing good health and compassion on the owner. The bowl stands on a wide, circular foot and is larger in diameter than any of the published Khorassan bronze cauldrons, the largest comparable vessels datable to this period. The presence of a maker's signature is particularly remarkable and is paralleled in the aforementioned caudrons indicating the casting large bronze vessels was something of a technical feat. A cauldron in the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg has a maker's signature of Abu Bakr Mahmud Saffra and a further example in the Victoria and Albert Museum is signed Abu Bakr (see A.S. Melikian Chirvani, Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World, London, 1982, pl. 10, p. 48). The signature on our bowl is also interesting as it places the vessel's manufacture in Herat, which was formerly eastern Khorassan. Condition Report: Intact with dented areas on rim, natural patination to the surface.

Thence by descent to his children, Monaco;  German art marketPublished: Kashi, Ceramiche islamiche dal IX al XVI secolo, Marcello Giampiccolo, 1996, p. 114Footnotes: Luigi Anton Laura (June 21, 1922 - August 3, 2007) was one of the most outstanding fine and decorative art dealers of post-war Italy. Born in San Remo to a family who could trace their lineage back to 1260, he was trained in the fine arts in Genoa, Florence and Turin, with a small interruption due to war service on the Russian Front. He was an expert connoisseur in fields as diverse as the early civilisations of Asia, the Middle East and Europe, 17th and 18th-century English and European furniture, decorative works, early Venetian painting, armour, graphic arts, textiles and much more. He opened his first shop in 1946 and his dealership sustained him, but, with his art historian wife Renate (Nera), he indulged his true passion for collecting. He travelled the world to learn about ancient cultures and to buy rare objects to add to his stock and collection. He travelled with Nera and his nieces across Asia and the Far East by Land Rover or camper van and he was a frequent visitor to London and other European cities, amassing an astonishing collection of some 6,000 diverse treasures. This collection was donated to the Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano (FAI), an organisation based on the model of the British National Trust, and is now housed in his old residence in San Remo. Laura possessed, he said, a genuine mania for owning, as well as making it possible for others to own, objects of rare interest and beauty. Almost up to the time of his death he carried on dealing with energy and enthusiasm, regarding his clients as his scholars; encouraging them to learn about the diverse objects he introduced into their homes.Condition Report: This dish is repaired and restored from multiple breaks. The breaks have been filled in. Extensive areas of repaint are noticeable to the exterior and interior along the break lines. The interior shows further scattered areas of repainting to its well, wall and lip. The foot shows minimal losses. One crack is historic and very likely appeared during the firing process.

Vicerregal School. Cuzco. Peru. 18th century.“Our Lady Immaculate and Pure, with some of the Litanies of Loreto"Oil on canvas.179,5 x 130,5 cm.It has not been possible to attribute this painting to a particular artist, but it is undoubtedly the work of a master.  One only has observe the beauty of the Virgin Mary's face and the portraits of the saints at her feet. This is a spectacular Cuzco canvas representing the Immaculate Virgin Mary ascending to the heavens on a half-moon and stamping on evil, amidst a choir of angels that display some of the names, invocations, or honorary titles given by the holy Fathers, extolling her dignity. With them, her person is honoured and her powerful intercession is invoked.Below, Saint Peter and Saint Anthony of Padua are in prayer.  These were possibly the saint names of the donors who commissioned the painting.Surrounding Mary are some of the litanies of the Blessed Virgin Mary.On the left, above: MYSTICAL ROSE: ("...like a plant of roses in Jericho," Ecclesiasticus 24:14. Mary is the rose of Jericho that had primacy over the others for its magnificence, its rare form, and its exquisite scent; and the rose bushes grew like trees.) MIRROR OF JUSTICE: ("She is a mirror of the eternal light, a spotless mirror of God's activity, an image of His goodness," Wisdom 7:26. Justice here is almost equivalent to the word holiness, of perfection, and supernatural goodness.)In the arms of an angel, a TREE, a CEDAR, "I have grown as a cedar in Lebanon" (Ecclesiasticus 24:17). The incorruptible cedar is a symbol of chastity. "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots, a Branch will bear fruit" (Isaiah 11:1).GATE OF HEAVEN ("And he was afraid and said, 'How dreadful is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!'" Genesis 28:17. Because it was through her that Our Lord Jesus Christ passed from Heaven to earth). On the right, another tree, THE OLIVE: "...like a beautiful olive tree in the fields" (Ecclesiasticus 24:14).Below,TOWER OF DAVID ("Your neck is like the tower of David, built with elegance" Song of Songs 4:4. A strong and beautiful construction that rose above the peak of a mountain built by King David for the defence of the city of Jerusalem. The Blessed Virgin Mary who rises sublime above the summit of all beauty and perfection, for the defence of the holy Church of God, the mystical Jerusalem.) FOUNTAIN: ("Fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon" Song of Songs 4:15).Upper right:LILIES OF THE FIELD ("Like a lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters" Song of Songs 2:2).Below, the PALM TREE, or patient palm in pain ("I have grown tall like a palm tree") Ecclesiasticus 24:14. Mary evokes the palm branches of Jesus' triumph in Jerusalem (John 12:13), a foreshadowing of his triumph with all the elect ("There was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb" Revelation 7:9). The palm, a sign of a victory achieved through perseverance in the struggle and enduring pain with fortitude, steadfastly, like Mary at the foot of the Cross.HOUSE OF GOLD, (the most beautiful of all metals, the one with the most value, because its virtues and purity have a transcendental brilliance and a dazzling perfection, are like an admirable work made of the purest gold.)And the 4th tree, CYPRESS: "...like a cypress on the mountains of Hermon" (Ecclesiasticus 24:13).Below,THE WELL: "...a well of living waters" Song of Songs 4:15. and TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?" 1 Corinthians 6:19.This lot is imported and therefore has a guaranteed export license from the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
